Report on the watershed 1979 election. Includes streaming audio of speeches by Margaret Thatcher and Jim Callaghan.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/politics97/background/pastelec/ge79.shtml
3 May 1979
The general election of 1979 was to prove a political watershed. Most historians and commentators agree that the election of Margaret Thatcher marked a break in post-war British history. The era from 1945 - 1979 had been characterised by a 'consensus' style of politics, in which the main parties mostly agreed on certain fundamental political issues and concepts such as the mixed economy, the role of the trades unions, the need for an incomes policy and the nature of the provision of public services such as health and education. This was now to change. Most of all, Mrs Thatcher's election heralded a change in the politics of unemployment. A victorious Mrs Thatcher gave a speech from the steps of No 10... Labour Prime Minister Jim Callaghan was forced to go to the country after his government lost a vote of confidence. Callaghan had had the option of calling an election in the Autumn of 1978, but decided to carry on and face the country after the economy had improved. Unfortunately the "winter of discontent" that followed severely damaged the government's economic policy and its standing in the polls. Although the government picked up slightly in the polls during the campaign, on 3 May 1979 Margaret Thatcher became Britain's first woman prime minister. Mr Callaghan was generous in defeat...

Is the Army chief of staff running for office? By Jed Babbin uring the Clinton years, the same people who (either privately or publicly) professed to loathe the military also tried to remake it in their own image. Rumors abounded of the White House, and especially the First Lady, heavily influencing general officer promotions to ensure political fealty. Whether those rumors were true or not, the general officer corps did change dramatically. Many of the generals who were promoted in the Clinton years are ready to retire, and some are now coming out of the closet. Retired Army general Wesley Clark should be any Democrat's dream candidate. Trim and polished, a former Rhodes scholar from Arkansas, Clark seems the model soldier. He is also someone to be taken seriously on national security. A few weeks ago, discussing his non-campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination on Meet the Press sine qua non of legitimate action. If you closed your eyes, you could have sworn you were listening to Carl Levin. In a way, you were.

Hi! My website is very spare these days, but that's okay. For now, I only want to talk about my recent visit to Tokyo. Tokyo is an amazing conglomeration of a crowded, busy and somewhat mysterious metropolis and a generous sprinkling of beautiful old, quiet places. For me, the ultimate summary of what Tokyo is all about are two modern, gaudy commercial buildings, with a quaint 500 year old shrine wedged between them. I made a short video that captures some of it. We went to the (early morning) fish market. There's people speeding around on crazy electric carts, many sellers and buyersall rushing around doing business. Then, when the event endedat 8 am, I believe, everyone was suddenly gone. How'd that happen? There's Shinjuku station, the huge train station, which is incredibly busy all day and all night, as far as I can tell. Where are all those people goingincluding small childrenat 1:30 am? Shibuya crossing is an astounding series of overlapping crosswalks. We watch people slowly gather on all sides, until there's virtually no place left to stand. Then the light changes...and everyone crosses, quickly and purposefully. No collisions, no rude or uncomfortable interactions. And when the light changes again, everyone is safely on the sidewalk. (This crossing was filmed and appears near the beginning of the film "Lost In Translation".) Akihabara, the electronics district, has numerous stores with the latest in gadgets, many which are not yet available in the U.S. Several of the stores are 7 stories tall, with only one floor reserved for exports. Their HD TV is better than ours, they have smaller MP3 players, and higher quality compact camcorders. Most of these will probably be available in the U.S. in 2 or 3 yearsby which time, Akihabara will be featuring more advanced products.

A Justice for All? More on This Story: Select One William Pryor's Record The Federal Court System Transcript: A Justice for All State Attorney Generals Map NOW's piece "A Justice for All" gives a glimpse of the legal precedent setting power of state attorney generals. These men and women are the highest legal officials in each state. It's a position that is likely to grow in importance as the nation's Supreme Court, increasingly pro-states' rights, is expected to send a greater number of decisions back to the states for judgment. State attorney generals are also the front line in consumer protection . A visit to your state's Web site will help you access important information about fraud, identity theft and no-call programs. Many state sites have special areas to help protect younger citizens. Visit South Dakota's Child Abduction Amber Alert Site and Virginia's Safe Surfin' page dedicated teaching kids about online safety to learn more. In the role as guardians of the public interest, several attorney generals are responsible for the massive tobacco awards now propping up state coffers. And, just last year, New York's Attorney General Eliot Spitzer filed, and won, a landmark suit against several large Wall Street firms accused of corporate malfeasance.

Sunday, June 16, 2002 Yeah, ok. Its been awhile since I blogged. I keep trying to get around to it, but...
The new job is great. I have a flexible schedule, I get to go into people's homes and see how they live and all their neat home ideas, play with cats and dogs, etc. And I'll get to visit New York next month. Yay.
The diet goes well. I accomplished one of four goals and i have lost about two pounds. Yay! Only XX to go. Yikes!
Now that i have a ridiculously long commute, I've caught up on my unread magazines. Yay for me. But I have so little time in the evenings.
My car hunt has narrowed down, and I went home for a while, and got that nice small-town person feel that you never appreciate until you leave.
Its been a stressful month too. Mom's job is in jeopardy, my stepmom's mother is at death's door, and My mom's best friend's first grandchild was born way too premature and had to stay in the hospital. Five pound babies are extremely tiny, and did you know they lose weight after they're born, before they gain again? So its been a close call on several levels.
But I love the new job. And i'm hopeful for my new career, but I had hoped the paycheck would be bigger. Taxes, taxes and more taxes. Sheesh. Oh well.

Voters Shift in Favor of Kerry
Ron Brownstein writes this in the LA Times: Widespread unease over the country's direction and doubts about President Bush's policies on Iraq and the economy helped propel Sen. John F. Kerry to a solid lead among voters nationwide, according to a new Times poll. Yet in a measure of the race's tenuous balance, Times polling in three of the most fiercely contested states found that Bush had a clear advantage over Kerry in Missouri and is even with the presumed Democratic rival in Ohio and Wisconsin. The poll shows Kerry up on Bush 51-44 in a two-man race and 48-42-4 with Nader included. Well. So what?

139. Life Of Robert
A running commentary on events of the world, email forwards, life in general, and anything else fit to print or say something about. Most topics stick to politics and religion, usually Christianity, and current events.
http://www.lifeofrobert.com
life of robert June 07, 2004 Dealing with a non-sibling Well, I have a new topic to discuss in my therapy. We've talked about separating myself from my ideas and the ideas of others, making a distinction between my feelings about a particular event and how I distort the truth of that event, creating a positive emotion in my heart as a means of both being more positive (duh!) and taking the edge off of the not so pleasant emotions (anger, sadness, etc.). Now we'll be talking about the biggest of them all and something I expect to be likely related to them all in some fashion. I have a problem with one of my friends who has been very close to me over the years. Waht it comes down to (and he is aware of this) is that I have a tendency to compare myself to him, usually in an entirely negative light. Further, I feel compared to him by others, and sometimes that's even true, and that he "wins out" in just about every arena we could co-exist in. The most notable arena, naturally, is the arena of the female. So I have a lot to talk about that I won't discuss in detail here, but part of me is somehow distractedly interested in seeing where this goes. The rest of me is just in the usual roller-coaster of turmoil to peace that I usually feel when I've hit the nerve of an issue that I don't know how to deal with.

Summer is Better with the Conservatives

"Abu" - Abu Abraham - in the Observer of 13 September 1959 parodies the massive Conservative advertising campaign, which featured a series of posters with images of prosperity and the slogan 'Life's Better with the Conservatives - Don't Let Labour Ruin it'. Hailsham and Charles Hill appear as billposters, pasting over the critical graffiti to claim that even the glorious summer weather of 1959 was a triumph for the Conservatives.
