Comparative Democratization Project studies emerging democracies. Site features a collection of political science syllabi on this topic, seminar papers, and a directory of Internet resources.

Comparative Democratization Project - Stanford University
Keywords: democracy, freedom, liberty, human rights, civil society, democratization, transition, reform, revolution, politics, political parties, elections, rule of law, justice, corruption, economy, development, military, ethnic.
Since the third wave of democratization began in 1974, more than 60 countries in Southern Europe, Eastern Europe, Latin America, Asia, and Africa have made transitions from authoritarian regimes (of varying duration and repressiveness) to some form of democracy (however tentative and partial). This wave of democratization, the greatest to date in the world system, represents a sea change in international relations and comparative politics. This project attempts to overcome the traditional division between academic disciplines and area studies to understand these rapid global transformations. Sponsored by the Institute for International Studies of Stanford University, its research foci include the following:
  • Development of theories about democratization that can apply both within and across different regions.

Welcome to Political Science! The Department of Political Science at The University of Iowa is a leader in the discipline, in the state of Iowa and within the university community. New classroom technologies are enhancing the possibilities for collaboration. With the department housed in Schaeffer Hall on the Pentacrest, Political Science students and faculty enjoy classrooms with up-to-date audio and video technology, access to the Vernon Van Dyke Computing Facility and a variety of other resources that enhance learning.

Writing In Political Science
What this handout is about...
This pamphlet will help you to recognize and to follow writing practices and standards in political science. The first step toward accomplishing this goal is to develop a basic understanding of political science and the kind of work political scientists do.
Defining Politics and Political Science
  • American Politics examines political behavior and institutions in the United States. Comparative Politics analyzes and compares political systems within and across different geographic regions. International Relations investigates relations among nation states and the activities of international. organizations such as the United Nations, the World Bank, and NATO as well as international actors such as terrorists, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and Multi-National Corporations (MNCs). Political Theory analyzes fundamental political concepts such as power and democracy and fundamental questions such as, "How should the individual and the state relate?".

"We're broke," exclaimed President Eduardo Duhalde, when asked about lifting the freeze on every bank account in the country, decreed in December following Argentina's default on its $141 billion foreign debt. Half the population is below the poverty line, and the other half is heading in that direction. In a land full of opinionated people, nobody knows what to do, not the government, not the man on the street. No figure has yet appeared on the horizon whom people have faith in, so impoverished of genuine leadership is this country.

IMPACT OF TECHNOLOGY
ON SOCIETY
Jan. 6, 2004 "Speer[ Minister of Armaments, Nazi Germany] is, in a sense, more important for Germany today than Hitler, Himmler, Goering, Goebbels, or the generals. They all have, in a way, become the mere auxiliaries of the man who actually directs the giant power machine... Speer...rather symbolizes a type which is becoming increasingly important in all belligerent countries: the pure technician, the classless young man without background... It is the lack of psychological and spiritual ballast, and the ease with which he handles the terrifying technical and organizational machinery of our age which makes this type go extremely far nowadays... This is their age: the Hitlers and Himmlers we may get rid of, but the Speers, whatever happens to this particular special man, will long be with us." The Observer (UK) Apr. 9, 1944 The Nazi high command are all dead, but note that their industrial/technological works did not pass away with them. The embryonic missile base at Peenemunde used by the Germans to tap London with V2 rockets was appropriated by the Americans and the Soviets, thus providing the start-up technology and scientists to greatly extend the Air Offensive to the Inter-Continental Ballistic Missile Age, which has encapsulated the entire world. "No military operation, no matter how small, can be conducted today without taking into account the awesome power of these great nuclear-tipped missiles. Their black, terrifying shadow falls across every continent on earth."
