Democrats support New Indigenous Political Voice
The Australian Democrats have congratulated Richard Frankland on announcing the establishment of the "Your Voice" political party in Melbourne today. Democrats Senator for Victoria, Lyn Allison, and lead Senate candidate for Victoria, Jess Healy, joined with NSW Senator Aden Ridgeway in stressing the importance of more Indigenous people being involved with the political process.
"Indigenous people have now become so marginalised from mainstream politics as the two major parties are seemingly united in a bipartisan desire to remove national elected Indigenous representation altogether," said Senator Ridgeway.
"Richard Frankland and "Your Voice" have a hard road ahead in these volatile times but the impetus is now on Indigenous people to stand up and be counted."
Senator Allison said the Democrats have a strong record of raising Indigenous issues in the Federal parliament.

"Your Voice" Aboriginal political party email news
The newly launched Aboriginal Political Party "Your Voice" has called for Indigenous people interested in their future to contact them through founder, Richard Frankland's website. The "Your Voice" political party was launched on the steps of Parliament House on Monday the 10th of May 2004 by Richard Frankland in front of a large audience of indigenous and non-indigenous people. It's website says that "Your Voice" wants people to contact them to make this new party a reality.
"It's time that we as indigenous Australians put the onus of equity back on non-indigenous Australians and ask them straight out, 'is this a racist society'? Would you like to see indigenous Australians in the halls of Parliament? Do you believe in an equitable voice in this society?"
Richard Frankland

The New Federalist Party Created in 1787 by some of our nation's finest minds, the Federalist Party was instrumental in forging the new nation. Where they have left off, a new party has begun. In a time dominated by partisan politics and money interests the cry for a united government in which the voice of the people will not be drowned out is stronger than it has ever been. Though incorporating many of the views from both the Republicans and Democrats, the New Federalists are their own party fixed around a strong central government that holds the voice of the people close at heart.
Begun as a small progressive movement in the Eastern United States, it is now gaining significant ground throughout the country, with the number of members growing exponentially. This is the official website of the New Federalist Party. We invite you to explore our views in our party platform and read about the old Federalists in the history section. FundRace shows neighbors' political donations
Last modified: March 23, 2004, 2:35 PM PST By Stefanie Olsen
Staff Writer, CNET News.com
Neighborly nosiness is extending into the political realm this campaign year, thanks to an Internet service that gives people a window into donations made next door. FundRace is a 4-month-old Web site that measures political contributions across the country, with color-coded maps illustrating the Democratic or Republican affiliations in many cities and states. Last week, it was updated to reveal a more personal picture of the political landscape. It lets people search by name or address to find contributors to candidates. A search returns lists of donors' names, addresses and professions, as well as the amount of money donated and the candidate who benefited. For example, a query on the last name "Dukakis" shows that Michael Dukakis, a professor at Northeastern University and a former U.S. presidential candidate, gave $500 to the political camp of John Kerry, the Democratic front-runner for president in 2004. Actor Ben Affleck contributed $2,000 to Wesley Clark. Microsoft founder Bill Gates donated $2,000 to President George W. Bush.

Political spam as national pastime
May 17, 2004, 4:00 AM PT By Declan McCullagh
Aaron Russo wants your vote so badly, he's willing to spam you for it. Last week, Russo , a Hollywood producer who is running for president as a Libertarian Party candidate, fired off thousands of unsolicited e-mail messages announcing his campaign and asking recipients to "help support Russo financially" with "automatic monthly contributions." Russo, whose films include "The Rose" and "Trading Places," is not alone. Political spam has become a thoroughly nonpartisan communications technique , with Democrats, Republicans and third parties alike turning to bulk e-mail in numbers that are still small but steadily increasing. Two percent of all spam is political, according to statistics compiled by antispam vendor Brightmail.

http://www.refugees.org/news/crisis/indonesia/aceh.htm
Political History of Aceh
Political Violence in Indonesia
At first glance, the reasons behind the Acehnese struggle for independence and their assertion of refugee status are not self-evident. Aceh is, after all, overwhelmingly Muslim, like the rest of Indonesia, and the Acehnese make no claim to a distinct ethnicity or, necessarily, political ideology. A brief exploration of Aceh's history, however, explains the mix of factors that led Aceh into a "war of national liberation" and turned thousands of its people into exiles. According to some historians, Islam first entered the Indonesian archipelago, and possibly all of Southeast Asia, through Aceh sometime around the year 700. The first Islamic kingdom, Perlak (a prosperous trading port in what is now Aceh), was established in the year 804. Much later, in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the port of Aceh became entangled, along with the rest of what is now Indonesia, in the European colonial powers' competition for worldwide political and economic dominance Interested parties included the Portuguese, Spanish, Dutch, and British. Paul Wolfowitz, Dean of the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) and former U.S. ambassador to Indonesia, says that for many centuries Aceh was a very distinct and influential political entity. "The Sultan of Aceh," he says, "along with the Sultan of Malacca, was a major controller of trade through the straits."

Friday, June 11, 2004 A Linux Desktop Bonanza - Sean Michael Kerner, Internet News
Linux desktop vendors Xandros and Linspire (also known as Lindows) are offering more desktop software for less, and, in the case of Xandros, for nothing. Xandros is giving away a version of its Linux Desktop Operating System for free. "Our principal aim is to spread the use of desktop Linux as far and wide as possible," Frederick H. Berenstein, chairman and chief technology officer of Xandros, told Internetnews.com. "We've also had a tremendously positive reception for the Xandros Desktop products and we felt that this would be an ideal way to give back to the community." The free version is called Open Circulation Edition and can be downloaded from the Xandros Web site without cost. The version, intended for non-commercial use, is loaded with the same features as its shrink-wrapped editions, with a few exceptions.

The Results Stand by kos Fri Jun 11th, 2004 at 12:32:50 EDT Not the easiest decision I've made, and I read the "what should I do" thread twice. But ultimately, I think the best of the bad decisions is to let the results stand. Here's why:
  • This could never be a traditional one person, one vote election. Even if restricted to registered users only (which will be the case in any future survey), there are people with multiple accounts. And any script kiddie could get around just about any restriction offered. Furthermore, I didn't have the technology to restrict the vote to only registered users. That capability would have to be coded. And while a more sophisticated voting mechanism inside Scoop would be nice, I don't have the power to make it happen today or tomorrow or even next week. We could have another vote, but we can never guarantee that it will be free of problems. In other words, the technology for a fair vote doesn't exist. The best we could've ever have hoped is a statistically valid sample of the community's will.

  • "An irresponsible exercise in political chicanery" In a fiery speech on the Senate floor, Sen. Robert Byrd calls the Department of Homeland Security a butt-coverer for Bush, a corporate boondoggle and a license for Uncle Sam to spy on Americans. On Tuesday, the Senate voted 90-9 to approve the landmark Homeland Security bill. Sen. Robert C. Byrd, D-W.Va., was one of the few senators voting against it, and in an address on the Senate floor, he raised fundamental questions about the need for the new agency and whether it will have the desired impact. What follows is the full transcript of his remarks during the conclusion of the Homeland Security debate. We have come to the end of a long, long road. For nearly five months this chamber has engaged in discussions about homeland security. But, for nearly as long a time this Congress has not engaged in seeing to it that there is actually funding to make our people any safer from the threat of another horrific terrorist attack.
