Church and state, together again

By Charles Sanson
As the Center for American Progress prepares to launch a " new project on faith and progressive policy " to overcome the "gap" that separates the Democratic Party from potential voters among regular church-goers, differently minded liberals and Democrats are working to prevent House Republicans from easing penalties on tax exempt religious organizations that wish to come out of the political closet from time to time to organize for a party or candidate. It is certainly no coincidence that the legislation appeared on the fast-track just days after the Bush campaign revealed that it was seeking the help of "friendly congregations" to get the good word out for the president. Nor is it surprising. It's one more example of law being revised to suit the transgressive practices of a favored minority, like media deregulation. [Read More]
Kerry’s Reagan Problem – And Opportunity

By Jeff Myhre
The passing of Ronald Reagan will give the Republican Party a fine opportunity at their convention to relive past glories. The convention (just a few miles uptown from Ground Zero) was always intended to be a theatrical event wallowing in the symbols of patriotism. Now, President Bush has the chance to wrap himself in [Read More]

And you probably know the Republican candidate. But, as New York Times columnist David Pogue reports for CBS News Sunday Morning , behind the scenes, there’s also a third key player. It's a campaign worker popular enough to reach millions of voters, inspiring enough to attract thousands of volunteers, and powerful enough to change the election process forever. And who is this great communicator? It’s not a who, it’s a what. It’s the Internet.

Welcome to Palestine! On behalf of the Palestinian people, especially those under siege, curfew, atrocities, massacres, hardship and danger, we would like to thank all of you who are with us physically, in protest or in prayers. We especially thank members of the international solidarity movement and international solidarity campaign who are currently in Palestine sharing these difficult and dark moments with us. We also thank those in the media trying to document what they can, under real danger, of this last chapter of injustice. For those asking about our well-being, we are doing well and our belief in our just cause increases by the minute. We were first in history and, inshallah, we will be last in geography.

WHAT THEY SAID: In honor of president Reagan's funeral, here's a useful corrective to the notion that his legacy was always celebrated. Today, almost everyone concedes his historical significance. But that wasn't what was said at the time. Here's a smattering of commentary from the 1980s.
"A few years from now, I believe, Reaganism will seem a weird and improbable memory, a strange interlude of national hallucination, rather as the McCarthyism of the early 1950s and the youth rebellion of the late 1960s appear to us today." - Arthur "Always Wrong" Schlesinger, Washington Post, May 1, 1988. "I wonder how many people, reading about the [Evil Empire'] speech or seeing bits on television, really noticed its outrageous character… Primitive: that is the only word for it. … What is the world to think when the greatest of powers is led by a man who applies to the most difficult human problem a simplistic theology – one in fact rejected by most theologians?... What must the leaders of Western Europe think of such a speech? They look to the head of the alliance for rhetoric that can persuade them and their constituents. What they get from Ronald Reagan is a mirror image of crude Soviet rhetoric. And it is more than rhetoric: everyone must sense that. The real Ronald Reagan was speaking in Orlando. The exaggeration and the simplicities are there not only in the rhetoric but in the process by which he makes decisions." - Anthony Lewis, New York Times, March 10, 1983

  • Sri Lanka to reintroduce huge property tax for foreign land owners
  • [Jun 11, 2004, 15:10], [AP] President Chandrika Kumaratunga's government has decided to reintroduce a tough tax regime for foreigners who buy land in Sri Lanka, a land ministry official said Friday. Foreigners who purchase land will have to pay a 100 percent tax, said W. Jayatilleke, the secretary for Lands Minister Anura Kumara Dissanayake. Kumaratunga's main political ally is a Marxist party, which has strongly criticized Wickremesinghe's attempts to liberalize Sri Lanka's economy. Dissanayake was quoted by a newspaper Friday as saying foreigners had been allowed to buy property at very low prices. Visit Website
