On the Harlem Newsstand: Vehicles for Many Voices In 1910, The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People launched The Crisis , with scholar W. E. B. Du Bois at the helm as editor. Through The Crisis , Du Bois was able to provide a way for the so-called "talented tenth" of the African-American population to evidence their abilities and creativity. Booker T. Washington's influence loomed large over New York Age , a weekly newspaper edited by James Weldon Johnson that promoted racial pride and self-improvement. Another publication was The National Urban League's Opportunity , established in 1923. Edited by Charles S. Johnson, Opportunity promoted contests for promising young black writers. Also in the 1920s, the Universal Negro Improvement Association published the Negro World , which was founded on Marcus Garvey's philosophy of black consciousness, self-help, and economic independence. Paperback – 382 pages (September 1999) At the turn of the century, the United States is on the verge of losing its vote in the General Assembly for non-payment of its arrears. There are eerie parallels between the domestic debate over the United Nations in 1999 and the struggles over the League of Nations in 1919. Why, many ask, are Americans the first to create international organizations and the first to abandon them? What is it about the American political culture that breeds both the most ardent supporters and the most vocal detractors of international organization? And why can't they find any common ground? In seeking to uncover the roots of American ambivalence toward international organization, this political history presents the first major analysis of U.S. attitudes toward both the United Nations and the League of Nations. It traces eight themes that have resurfaced again and again in congressional and public debates over the course of this century: exceptionalism, sovereignty, nativism and racism, unilateralism, security, commitments, reform, and burden-sharing. It assesses recent domestic political trends and calls for the development of two interactive political compactsone domestic and one internationalto place U.S.-UN relations on a new footing.

    http://www.friendcalib.org/newsstand/f1faith.htm
by Dale A. Carlson "Shhh!" the librarians' infamous admonition still commands attention in reading rooms, but California library lovers are becoming increasingly noisy in their complaints about library budget cuts. In fact, they've taken to the streets, launching successful political campaigns for increased library funding. This past June alone, half a dozen California communities passed ballot measures directed at reversing the decimation of book budgets, open hours, professional staffs and, in some cases, the outright shutdown of branches. Similar campaigns already are under way around the state for this November's ballots. San Francisco voters in June approved Proposition E, which nearly doubles funding for local libraries. Unlike other measures, however, Prop E didn't call for tax hikes. It simply mandated that a set percentage of local property tax revenues be devoted to libraries in each year's city budget. The campaign was launched by Friends of the San Francisco Public Library and, despite strenuous opposition by Mayor Frank Jordan, Prop E won a smashing 70 percent of the vote. A series of Friends sponsored community meetings on alternatives drew hundreds of citizens to what effectively served as open focus groups. A broad consensus quickly emerged: a Charter amendment was the unanimous, preferred course of action. The Friends also recognized it would be important to guarantee that an expanded library budget would be used to meet patron needs, so a commitment was made to to increase branch library hours. Remaining funds would be used for more books and other library needs.

LEXINGTON STAND FOR CHILDREN CHAPTER KICK-OFF CREATES FIRST CHAPTER IN MASSACHUSETTS
On November 22, 2003 the Lexington, Massachusetts Stand for Children Chapter held its Kick-Off event, drawing 80 residents on a day with many competing local events. This marks the successful launch of a new Chapter and the first milestone of Stand for Children's Chapter-building in Massachusetts. The Chapter Kick-Off Committee worked hard to publicize the introduction of Stand for Children in Lexington. The Kick-Off not only attracted elected officials and Lexington families, but also several people from the neighboring town of Arlington who are interested in forming a Chapter in their community. An anonymous Lexington family generously matched membership contributions made at the Chapter Kick-Off. The 42 people who joined at the event are founding members of Massachusetts Stand for Children.

    Sermon by James W. Crawford
    November 2, 1997
    Luke 4: 14-21
*The number 2 stands after the sermon title because it is a title used in 1977. The theme is the same; the sermon is different. Last Sunday morning Etta Johnson sat at our front desk greeting people and answering the telephone. I happened to be picking up some material from narthex office and heard Etta on the phone speaking with someone inquiring about our services here. The person asked about our location. I found myself intrigued with Etta's answer. She talked of our corner here at Dartmouth and Boylston. She alluded to our place on Copley Square. But thenjust amazing! She did not mention the landmark library across Boylston Street. She did not refer to our neighbor across the Square, Trinity Church. She located us as the Church next to the newsstand. "When you exit the subway," she said, "you'll see a newsstand with a tower next to it. That's us." Oh, Etta! Right on the money! What a great place to be! A church at an urban crossroads next to a newsstand.
