On Friday, April 16, 2004, a chapter of Pi Sigma Alpha (the National Political Science Honor Society) was established at Ferrum College. Pi Sigma Alpha was founded in 1920 at the University of Texas in Austin for graduate and undergraduate students in political science, international studies and public administration. To bring a chapter of this prestigious honor society to our campus, the Department of Political Science had to tender a formal petition to the national office in Washington, DC. After this initial stage of the approval process, Ferrum College was invited to send the names of its initiates.
The national office officially approved our application and authorized the establishment of the Alpha Beta Pi chapter on our campus. The Political Science Department with the support of Student Government Association, President’s Office, Division of History, Political Science and the Arts, and the Office of Student Activities organized an initiation ritual in the Founders Room of the Library Annex. The ceremony was officiated by Dr. Edward Lynch, Associate Professor and Department Chair of Political Science at Hollins University. Dr. Lynch reminded the audience of the importance and value of politics and government. He acknowledged the academic accomplishment of the students and encouraged them to appreciate the responsibility that comes with such recognition.

The Future of Political Islam
Graham E. Fuller

From Foreign Affairs March/April 2002
Article preview: first 500 of 4,437 words total.
Summary: The mantra that the war on terrorism is not a war on Islam ignores one crucial fact: Islam and politics are inextricably linked throughout the Muslim world. Islamism includes Osama bin Laden and the Taliban but also moderates and liberals. In fact, it can be whatever Muslims want it to be. Rather than push secularism, the West should help empower the silent Muslim majority that rejects radicalism and violence. The result could be political systems both truly Islamist and truly democratic.
Graham E. Fuller is former Vice-Chairman of the National Intelligence Council at the CIA and is finishing a new book on Islamism.

Useful keywords, call number ranges, and contact names are also included. Some topics are interdisciplinary in nature and useful information can be found in more than one subject guide. Ethics commission investigates Perry's tropical trip By AP
Published: 04/23/04
AUSTIN (AP) The Texas Ethics Commission has told Gov. Rick Perry it will decide whether he illegally converted political money to personal use when he used campaign funds to pay for a trip to the Bahamas.
At issue is money Perry used to pay for himself, wife Anita and several top staffers to travel to the Bahamas in February with campaign donors and others, the Austin American-Statesman reported Thursday.
"I think once the ethics commission looks into the facts, they
will find it was an appropriate trip," Perry told reporters
Thursday.
Perry spokeswoman Kathy Walt declined to say how much was spent on the trip but said it will be listed on Perry's next campaign finance report.
Also along on the trip at their own expense were San Antonio
businessman James Leininger, a supporter of private school vouchers, and his wife Cecilia; Houston beer distributor John Nau and his wife, Bobbi; Grover Norquist, a Washington-based anti-tax activist; and Brooke Rollins, a former Perry aide now director of the Texas Public Policy Foundation, and her husband. The Leiningers have given Perry more than $75,000 in political

Annenberg Web site tests political ads against facts By Elizabeth Rossi (Daily Pennsylvanian, U. Pennsylvania)
Published: 04/15/04
(U-WIRE) PHILADELPHIA - In the midst of increasing voter cynicism about politicians' integrity, the Annenberg Public Policy Center is providing a non-partisan look at the presidential candidates' campaign claims. Currently focusing on the presidential race, the Web site www.factcheck.org mainly publishes analyses of the facts and statistics cited in the advertisements, speeches and interviews from the campaigns of Democratic nominee John Kerry and President George W. Bush.
The site was launched in December, and the goal "is to create a penalty in the political process for those who deceive by having the press move more aggressively to say, 'That's wrong,'" said Kathleen Hall Jamieson, director of the Annenberg Public Policy Center.
"I thought initially that we would be primarily a resource for journalists and would reach voters once removed," Annenberg Political Fact Check Director Brooks Jackson said.
However, Web traffic has reached an average of 9,000 hits each day, with almost 15,000 subscribers to the Web site's e-mail update.

Political Islam: Beyond the Green Menace
by John Esposito
Originally published in the journal Current History, January 1994. "To equate Islam and Islamic fundamentalism uncritically with extremism is to judge Islam only by those who wreak havoca standard not applied to Judaism and Christianity... There are lessons to be learned from a past in which fear of a monolithic Soviet threat often blinded the United States to the Soviet bloc's diversity, led to uncritical support for [anti-Communist] dictator-ships, and enabled the "free world" to tolerate the suppression of legitimate dissent and massive human rights violations by governments that labeled the opposition 'Communist' or 'socialist.' '' It is the mightiest power in the Levant and North Africa. Governments tremble before it. Arabs everywhere turn to it for salvation from their various miseries. This power is not Egypt, Iraq,or indeed any nation, but the humble mosque (1). From Ayatollah Khomeini to Sheik Omar Abdel Rahman, from Iran to the World Trade Center, government leaders and opinion makers in the West and in the Middle East have warned of the dangers of militant Islam. If the 1980s were dominated by images of embassies under siege, American hostages, and hijackings, the 1990s bring prophecies of insurgent movements wielding nuclear weapons and employing urban terrorism. Headlines announce the possibility of a worldwide Islamic uprising and a clash of civilizations in which Islam may overwhelm the West. Television viewers see the bodies of Coptic Christians and tourists killed by Egyptian extremists and take in reports of Algerian militants' pitched battles with police. All fuel alarmist concerns reflected in publications and conferences with titles like "Roots of Muslim Rage," "Islam: Deadly Duel with Zealots," and "Awaiting God's Wrath: Islamic Fundamentalism and the West."

Reagan's Economic Legacy The Gipper's Forgotten Tax Victory ... More Headlines NEWS ANALYSIS The Strategy Behind Kerry's Veepstakes Here's a rundown of the top contenders for running mate and the possible impact each would have in the fight for the White House He has the Presidential nomination locked up. Now John Kerry faces his next big task: picking a running mate. Potential Vice-Presidents have been quietly auditioning for months: Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack has boosted his profile in Washington, while New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson got plenty of TV time during his state's primary. Then there's John Edwards, whose surprise rise to become Kerry's chief challenger makes him a strong contender for the No. 2 slot. Still, for all the jockeying, at this point, potential Veeps can't do much to improve their chances. "Candidates choose Vice-Presidents based on the sole criterion of how they can help win the election," says Rhodes College political scientist Michael Nelson. In recent elections, that has meant balancing two often-conflicting strategies diversification and amplification. For the first, think FDR and John Nance Garner in 1932 or John F. Kennedy's 1960 Boston-to-Austin connection, when Lyndon B. Johnson was picked to lock up a wavering Texas.
