Basic Polish language course
From Wikibooks, the free textbook project.
The Polish language is a member of the Western Slavic group of the Indoeuropean family of languages. It is easiest to learn if someone already knows some other related language. The most closely related are other Western Slavic languages Czech Slovak and Kashubian . More distant are the Southern and Eastern Slavic languages like Russian Ukrainian , and Croatian . Even further, but still somewhat similar are the Baltic languages Latvian and Lithuanian Someone who doesn't speak any Slavic or Baltic language, but speaks some other Indoeuropean language, may still find many similarities between Polish grammar and the grammar of that language as well as many similar words. Learning Polish is most difficult for those who don't know any Indoeuropean language well, thus a person who speaks only Chinese Japanese , or Korean ... but it's still possible. edit

Battalion Warsaw - Mokotow The Gray Ranks Today
How did it happen that 20 years later, our Battalion would be the first in Poland to earn and take on the name of The Gray Ranks . This in a country taken over by the communists and in reality being under Soviet occupation. A great deal of work, strenuous hours convincing the authorities and a huge all out effort had to be made, by each scout and instructor in the battalion, in an effort to earn the Name. The main goal for each individual was education. Education from a personal model , one of the most important elements of scouting, based on an original member of The Gray Ranks. These models had to be legible, intimate, clear and expressing without a doubt that the person wanted to be similar to one of Them. They not only had to express their willingness to make sacrifices in their lives, similar to the sacrifices the original scouts from The Gray Ranks had made in their lives but, more importantly, they had to express their attitude toward citizenship, their dedication toward education and self improvement, not only for themselves but for Poland. Since 1976 our Battalion has organized the "Arsenals." It is a gold troop of scouts wearing the names of Our Heroes, creating a "gray ranks family," a resilient movement.

Introduction Polish is spoken by almost all of the 35 million inhabitants of Poland, by about 700,000 people in the United States, and by smaller groups in the Lithuania, Ukraine, Canada, Brazil, and other countries. It is one of the Slavic languages and thus part of the Indo-European family. Polish is written in the Roman alphabet, with q, v , and x missing, and with j pronounced y, w pronounced v , and c pronounced ts . There's no getting away from it - Polish is a tough language, any early attempts at which will have you sounding like you're whispering, gargling and choking simultaneously. Many Poles, particularly the younger ones, speak a little English, but that's no excuse not to learn at least a few of those tortuous tongue-twisters, so we've included. at the bottom of this page, a brief guide to get you started.
For those who wish to get more involved, there are a host of excellent language schools , many of them providing translation services , which may be necessary if you plan to stay any length of time in the city.
