29. Poland Geography
Geography. Generally speaking, Poland is an unbroken plain reaching from the Baltic Sea in the north to the Carpathian Mountains in the south.
http://www.country-studies.com/poland/geography.html
Geography
Topography
To the south of the lowlands are the lesser Poland uplands, a belt varying in width from ninety to 200 kilometers, formed by the gently sloping foothills of the Sudeten and Carpathian mountain ranges and the uplands that connect the ranges in southcentral Poland. The topography of this region is divided transversely into higher and lower elevations, reflecting its underlying geological structure. In the western section, the Silesia-Kraków Upthrust contains rich coal deposits. The Baltic coastal plains are a low-lying region formed of sediments deposited by the sea. The coastline was shaped by the action of the rising sea after the Scandinavian ice sheet retreated. The two major inlets in the smooth coast are the Pomeranian Bay on the German border in the far northwest and the Gulf of Gdansk in the east. The Oder River empties into the former, and the Vistula forms a large delta at the head of the latter. Sandbars with large dunes form lagoons and coastal lakes along much of the coast. Drainage

Poland? HISTORICAL GEOGRAPHY OF POLAND..... In researching Polish ancestors it is important to understand what the boundaries of Poland were at a given period in time. Poland's geography has been redefined many times. Unless you understand these basic changes, it can be confusing to understand why your why your Polish ancestors who immigrated to another country would declare their country as; Germany, Prussia, East Prussia, Russia, Austria or Hungary. Your ancestors answer were politically correct, but it did not necessarily reveal their ethnic origin. They were of Polish descent, but they were caught up in the boundary changes associated with Poland's political history. They lived in an area that was not longer under Poland's control. In certain periods of history, Poland didn't even exist as a country.

Brief History of Poland and It's Geography You may be familiar with the current map of Poland (above). It is useful reference if you are trying to determine an area were someone is living in Poland today. However, it may not be a good reference for locating where your ancestors may have come from in Poland. This section will help to understand why. TABLE 1: Comparison 1660-1870

    39. Geography Of Poland
The landscape of poland can be divided broadly into three relief groups the lowlands, the highlands, and the mountains. The Little poland Uplands.
    http://www.poland-embassy.si/eng/poland/geography.htm
POLISH LANDSCAPE T he landscape of Poland can be divided broadly into three relief groups: the lowlands, the highlands, and the mountains. There are sharply contrast between the northern two-thirds of the country and the southern one-third. The northern zone's principal topographical characteristic is the North European Plain. The southern one-third of Poland consists of various upland areas and adjacent or intervening lowlands. Along the southern border are the Carpathian and Sudeten mountains. The highest elevation is Rysy (2,499 m) in the High Tatra range of the Carpathians. The eastern extremes of Poland display characteristics common to eastern Europe, but the rest of the country is linked to western Europe by structure, climate, and the character of its vegetation.
T he Coastal Plain The Baltic Coastal Plain stretches across northern Poland from Germany to Russia (Kaliningrad region). It is largely occupied by the ancient province of Pomerania. The Pomeranian (Pomorska) Bay in the west and the Gulf of Gdansk in the east are the two major inlets. In the southern portion of the former, two islands block off the Szczecin (Szczecinski) Lagoon, into which the Oder discharges its waters. In the Gulf of Gdansk, the Vistula (Wisla) River forms a large delta. Sandbars, on which the winds have created large dunes, line much of the coast, separating the coastal lakes and lagoons from the sea. The main urban centres are the ports of Szczecin on the lower Oder and Gdansk, Gdynia and Sopot in the east.
