A Northern Pantheism: Notes on the Confederation Poets and Contemporary Mythographers
by Maia Bhojwani Among the Millet and published in The Week Essays in Criticism (Series I) The Dread Voyage and Other Poems Lyrics of Earth Despite the nostalgia evident in this recreation of an archaic, Arcadian and mythic past, A rationalistic approach to nature tempers their treatment of mythological subjects and differentiates them from writers as committed to the use of myth as Isabella Valancy Crawford. Yet the major influences upon their work, which include the Romantics and the American Transcendentalists, were often understood in the conventional terms of nineteenth-century interpretations of mythology and the poets led to experiment with indigenous forms of myth-making in keeping with the theories of contemporary mythographers. The implications of these ideas for the Canadian poets vary, from their obvious application to a poetic sort of nature-worship, to a more serious consideration of the direction the literature of a relatively new nation should take. I shall consider these ideas as a possible background for the patterns of imagery which occur in their studies of landscape, with special reference to Carman, Roberts, Lampman and Campbell, who matured under similar influences during the formative years, in the 1880s. Scott started writing almost a decade later (just as Crawford began a decade earlier) and the mythographers have little direct bearing upon his Indian experience.

Alkek Library, Southwest Texas State University, San Marcos, Texas 78666, (512) 245-2313 Hispanic Writers Collection Introduction In 1986 Texas State University-San Marcos founded the Southwestern Writers Collection, a rich new archive focusing on the history, literature, and fine and popular arts of the region. Soon it became clear that a major element in the dynamic young collection would be the story of Hispanic culture, both in its Spanish and Mexican origins, and its adaptations north of the border. An early landmark in the development of the collection was the acquisition of the 1555 printing of Cabeza de Vaca's La Relacion y Comentarios , considered the earliest work on what is now Texas, and the first overland travel book describing the Americas. Cabeza de Vaca's saga, involving shipwreck and a forced march across much of the Southwest, resulted in his becoming a spokesman for the Spanish conquistadors to treat the native peoples humanely. This major acquisition was purchased with gifts from Bill and Sally Wittliff, the founding donors of the writers collection, and the Azadoutian Foundation of Cambridge, Massachusetts

Partying on Parnassus:
the New York School Poets
by John Simon D The Last Avant-Garde: The Making of the New York School of Poets Lehman states the problem succinctly: So, by way of further laying down of cards, let me state my idea of poetry. It comprises music, painting (imagery), insight, and pregnancy or memorableness of utterance, the first two, of course, in a special sense. Ambiguity, too, may be a legitimate device, but it should not be confused with the mainstay of much New York School (henceforth NYS quot homines, tot sententiae . That way lies formlessness, dissolution, anarchy, and, yes, madness, when free association, becoming too free, hurtles into dementia. By accepting such scot-free association, anything the NYS poets tossed off or elucubrated could be proclaimed poetry. That these poets were closely associated with some painters (mostly of the NYS of painting) and some composers explains one of their major fallacies: the bland assumption that the procedures of the other arts could be readily appropriated by poetry, so that, for instance, the techniques of Jackson Pollock and John Cage could be applied to writing poems. Poets die younger than writers, study finds
Story Tools WASHINGTON (Reuters) Poets die young younger than novelists, playwrights and other writers, a U.S. researcher said Wednesday. It could be because poets are tortured and prone to self-destruction, or it could be that poets become famous young, so their early deaths are noticed, said James Kaufman of the Learning Research Institute at California State University at San Bernardino. For the report, published in the Journal of Death Studies, Kaufman studied 1,987 dead writers from various centuries from the United States, China, Turkey and Eastern Europe. He classified the writers as fiction writers, poets, playwrights, and nonfiction writers. He did not study the causes of death. "Among American, Chinese and Turkish writers, poets died significantly younger than nonfiction writers," Kaufman wrote in the report. "Among the entire sample, poets died younger than both fiction writers and nonfiction writers." Because Kaufman studied some writers who lived hundreds of years ago, it is impossible to compare their average age of death to that of the general population.

Biography
Margaret Avison was born April 23, 1918 in Galt, Ontario. She was educated at Victoria College, University of Toronto and worked as a librarian, editor, lecturer, and social worker. She began publishing poems in 1939 in the Canadian Poetry Magazine . Her first poetry collection, The Winter Sun (1960) was started in Chicago where Avison lived in 1956 as a Guggenheim fellow. The poems in this collection are deeply introspective, concerned with a moral sensibility. The Winter Sun won the Governor's General Award. Avison's subsequent poetry collections explore spiritual discovery in a form reminiscent of the 17th century metaphysical poets. Avison combines a sense ofsocial concern, moral and religious values in her work. No Time also won a Governor's General award.

Cursed be the social lies that wrap us from the living truth! - Alfred Lord Tennyson, "Locksley Hall" Perhaps adolescent students are often impervious to the appeal of literature because for them words do not represent keen sensuous, emotional, and intellectual perceptions. This indicates that throughout the entire course of their education, the element of personal insight and experience has been neglected for verbal abstractions. The history of criticism is peopled with writers who possess refined taste but who remain minor critics precisely because they are minor personalities, limited in their understanding of life. Knowledge of literary forms is empty without an accompanying humanity. - Louise M. Rosenblatt, Literature as Exploration (1995 [1938])
