Writing About Poetry General Advice 1) Avoid the "Poet-Says" Approach In writing about a poem, avoid the poet says-approach. Instead, refer to the "speaker,” “novice," or ”persona.” Sometimes one can identify the voice as that of a lover, parent, child, farmer, lifeguard etc. 2) Consider Your Audience What audience does the voice address? The self? A particular individual? Humankind in general? An animal? An inanimate object? An abstraction? 3) Examine the Context of the Situation. Out of what situation does the poem arise? What circumstances provide the context for this speech? To what past events does it refer? What is happening at the moment? Does the poem imply a set of stage directions? (Does the voice speak in the past, present, or future tense?) 4) Identify the Speaker's Tone (his/her/its relationship to the subject, audience, and self). Is the speaker distant from the subject and calmly objective or close to the subject and emotionally involved? Is the tone ironic, bitter, depressed, nostalgic, wistful, nervous, serene angry, amused, exuberant? What kind of language does the voice use familiar or unusual, monosyllabic or polysyllabic, concrete or abstract, sensory or non-sensory, archaic or modern or even technical?

Turn off your mind relax and float downstream. Litkicks has been around since July 23, 1994, and we're still here. We never had a business model, which is why we don't have to go out of business now. The site is devoted to a few experimental literary movements that tried to uncover some deeper truths about life. In studying the life stories of the writers as well as their works, there are sometimes even more interesting truths to be revealed than are found in the works themselves. We at Literary Kicks believe in deconstructionism as long as you clean up after you're done. And we do not believe masterpieces exist, nor do we want them to. We prefer the glory of brilliant mistakes. The site is currently designed around four main themes:
The Beat Generation

Jack Kerouac
Allen Ginsberg
Gary Snyder

questions and discussions

There are also a few entries that have yet to be categorized (and hopefully will be soon) on Vladimir Mayakovsky Ralph Ellison , the Harlem Renaissance Basho Buson Issa ... J. D. Salinger

June 2004 Poets In The Spotlight Tess has selected 5 outstanding poets this month. Please take a moment and read some of their work by clicking the links below.
  • Allyn
  • Aspiring Angel
  • CherryK
  • Elonzabeta ...
  • Rose Marie Streeter We have added an additional poet to our selection. This poet will be selected by the Starlite Staff to spotlight a new poet to the cafe. The Poets in the spotlight is not a contest. It is our opinion that poetry cannot be judged. The Poets in the Spotlight is a means of showcasing different poets each month. We base our decisions not only on their poetry, but based on their overall attitude and by how much they participate at the cafe. (by getting to know everyone and by leaving constructive comments on others poems). Poet of the Moment Every poet deserves to be in the spotlight. The Poet of the Moment is chosen at random and changes each time you visit us.

general Commentary by Sherman Alexie. Alexie on his poetic inspiration. Alex Kuo’s poetry workshop was the first place I ever read contemporary poems
    http://www.english.uiuc.edu/maps/poets/a_f/alexie/general.htm
General Commentary by Sherman Alexie Alexie on his poetic inspiration "[Alex Kuo’s poetry workshop] was the first place I ever read contemporary poems, especially contemporary American Indian poems. And I read one poem in particular that was revolutionary and revelatory. The line was, ‘I’m in the resrvation of my mind.’ It was by Adrian Louis, a Paiute Indian poet. For me, that was like, ‘In the beginning . . .’ It was , ‘Because I could not stop for death, death kindly stopped for me . . .’ It was ‘ I sing the body electric . . .’ It was all that and more. It was the first line I ever read in any work, any fiction anywhere that ever applied to something I knew. Literally, it was this flash of lightning, roll of thunder, Bert Parks parking, Bob Barker barking, where I understood everything that I ever wanted to be. At that moment. When I read that line. It was really like that, like a light switch. And at that moment I knew I wanted to be a writer." from Bob Ivry, "From the Reservation of His Mind."
