We will investigate the many ways in which our subjective self (feelings, thoughts, experiences, insights) merges with the medium (vocabulary, some history and style considerations, craft, and language) to create poems. We will read our own work and that of others, and together engage in writing exercises and word play. There will be discussions and optional assignments for you to gain familiarity, ease, and a sense of adventure in poetry. The instructor will give written feedback on a total of up to four poems, and you are welcome to share your work, although we will not workshop (i.e., critique) student work in class. Small copy fee. Contemporary Ohio Poets Extension Activities:
The Poetry of Leaving Overview
This activity contains additional poems by contemporary Ohio poets to supplement the lesson that begins on page 129 of the Ohio Reading Road Trip Instructor's Guide. This activity, "The Poetry of Leaving," explores poetry that deals with the experience of leaving one's hometown. The two poems selected for this section share two specific characteristics: They both deal with changes in the lives of Ohioans and their writers' choice in words, phrases, and images that create emotional impact. In this section, students will learn that poets choose every word for its precision of meaning, which reveals the emotion that the poet wants to convey. The first poem here will be treated in more specific terms than the second, with the understanding that students can apply what they have learned through one poem to their understanding of the other. Getting Started Lesson Objectives
After completing this activity, students will be able to:
  • Write a poem in the style of one of the poems studied

Charles R. Duke (1984) has noted, "English teachers have given some attention to aesthetic reading, usually terming it the development of literary appreciation, but many of the classroom practices used to foster that appreciation have been counter-productive." Instruction on comprehending and appreciating poetry has especially been regarded as ineffective. Either because of a lack of appreciation for their students' abilities to study poetry or because of well-intentioned enthusiasm to show students the wonders of the form, many teachers have force-fed "meanings" to puzzled students or have taught poetry by way of dissecting poetic techniqueshere is a symbol, here is a metaphor, and so on. The literature in the ERIC database, however, offers many ideas on useful, more productive approaches to the study of poetry as the several samples discussed here illustrate.

Poetry Profile - Selwyn Primary School
BACKGROUND
Selwyn Primary School is situated in the London Borough of Newham close to West Ham Park and just down the road from the multi-cultural shopping area of Green Street. The school caters for 400 pupils from many different cultures including 30 deaf pupils who are fully integrated into mainstream. Selwyn's principal aim is to ensure that all children receive a vibrant education in an enjoyable and challenging learning environment which promotes and celebrates our school motto Achievement through Teamwork. We aim to offer standards of excellence for all children by providing a broad and balanced educational experience within a supportive environment where every pupil feels valued and respected. POETRY ACTIVITIES
We first became seriously involved in poetry writing when Matthew Sweeney visited about three years ago to do a poetry reading. Matthew's amusing and thought provoking poems immediately captured the attention of both pupils and staff. With a Poetry Places grant, we invited Matthew back for a poet-in-residence project, mainly involving Year 6 pupils. Although all the children in the year group joined in the poetry reading sessions, for much of the time Matthew worked with a small group of talented enthusiasts. Overall, there were about eight half day workshops over a six month period.

I've never forgotten the enchantment of writing poetry in a quiet classroom, lit only by flickering candles. Such a simple idea and so magical! (Thank you! to one of my favorite high school teachers Vicki Pierson at Corvallis High, Corvallis, Oregon) Art as Muse

Inspiration for poems can come from anywhere, including works of art and writing poetry in response to art is both challenging and exciting. I was asked recently to submit poems for two anthologies - one in which I chose the art and the other in which I was assigned a specific piece of art. I enjoyed both approaches. For Jan Greenberg's Heart to Heart: New Poems Inspired by Twentieth-Century American Art I was asked to choose a contemporary piece of art as the inspiration for my poem. Kiki Smith's "These Eyes" haunted me and the poem I wrote in response to Smith's art is titled "Pantoum for These Eyes."

Mothering
... Sept-Oct, 2000 by Joan Logghe
Want to bond? Cuddle, lounge, or hunker down on the couch, bed, or floor and read some poems. Reading poetry bonds the two or more of youto each other and to language itself. Poetry, the mother lode of language, needs to be spoken aloud, as it was written with an ear to the music. Just as classical music is said to help with learning, the cadences and depth of poetry surely attune the heart to a range of emotions, develop a sense of humor, and slip in a desire to read along the way. When a child lights up at the mention of poetry, it is always a sign of life, and there is hope for my world. Look beyond our great poet Dr. Seuss, past Shel Silverstein's Where the Sidewalk Ends, beyond Robert Louis Stevenson's A Child's Garden of Verses, and you will discover a whole world of children's poetry. Bear in mind: A. A. Milne wrote more than Winnie the Poohhe is also the author of poetry volumes Now We Are Six and When We Were Very Young. Consider adding some less familiar titles when building your poetry library. A favorite book of poetry is invaluable for a short read on a tired night or as first aid for a bee sting. Poems also provide a nourishing snack of soul food during a carpool moment, or when you're hiding out in the bathroom; it bridges any generation gap.
