Independent booksellers IMPERFECT BINDING The dismal coverage of the book business in Chicago's mainstream media makes Publishers Weekly a must-read if you want to know what going on in and around Chicago as it happens. Just grab the trade mag off a discerning newsdealer's rack and look for Kinsella's byline, and you'll know what every publisher, bookseller and reporter in the city knows about everything from indie bookstores to Oprah. Kinsella scored a coup by getting the talk-show diva to pause for a chat about The Book Club (and with all those books to read, Oprah ain't got much time for chit-chat). Since the decision to hold her BookExpo at McCormick Place for the near future has all those New York types wondering about us alien Midwestern life forms, Kinsella's on the hot seat to deliver the dish. Noteworthy: Publishers Weekly does not review self-published titles.

    Poet's Pantry Field Trip
Trailhead Teacher's Resources Start Field Trip By Cara Bafile Poetry, with its beautiful sound and imaginative nature, is at the same time both intriguing and perplexing to students. It is essential for young children to experience some poetry while they are in elementary school so that they will become comfortable with its format and interpretation. Students who are not afforded such an opportunity can be frustrated by this type of expression, not only in understanding published poetry but also in writing their own work. What is the subject of this poem? What type of poem is this? What is the message of the poem? How does accompanying artwork enhance the presentation of a poem? , and How does the poet feel about the subject of the poem?

Looking at work that spans the length of his career, this article examines Hughes's individual collections for children, both in their own terms as poetry and in terms of their intended audience. I suggest that Ted Hughes's poetry for children was an attempt, with varying degrees of success, to create a body of work that remained true to his gift of 'caging' the minute within real and imaginary worlds, and that he expended considerable energy in staying faithful, not only to the world as he saw it, but also to the way his work appeared in, and took its place within, that world. At the century's end, poetry and verse for children is a burgeoning field, the roster of children's poets long and growing. Some critics find little merit in the genre, preferring that children be introduced instead to the works of acknowledged 'great' poets. This essay explores, among related ideas, such questions as these: In today's abundance of children's verse, is there genuine poetry? What do critics and poets consider to be genuine poetry? Three Essays on the Theory of Sexuality It was left to Sigmund Freud to point out to a disbelieving world the self-evident fact of children's sexuality: 'If mankind had been able to learn from a direct observation of children, these three essays ... could have remained unwritten.' And it is no coincidence that he wrote them in these years, from 1890 to the 1920s, years in which children's literature was most heavily invested in denial. (Julia Briggs, in Children's Literature , p.170) Henry James: What Masie Knew (1897) and The Turn of the Screw (1898); profound and disturbing accounts of childhood written for adults. Main Library. Horrors! It's Poetry! by Tamara Thorne From elementary school on, though, I normally wrote only for myself and only for pleasure, and in addition to stories and satires, I did indulge in lots of silly verse, usually about boogers or politics or science fiction. Those rhymes, I took pride in because, to me, they had substance. I cared about boogers and politics, and UFOs. They had substance (especially the boogers). Before high school, when I found out other students would pay me to rewrite lyrics to songs or personalize booger poems for them, I had never shown my true colors because, well, they were peculiar. Especially in little girls. Then a year or two ago, when I was invited to contribute to , an anthology of poetry by horror writers (but not necessarily about horror), edited by Tom Piccrilli, my first reaction was your basic jaw-drop. But before I could quip something about the man from Nantucket, I was stopped cold by the information that among other shining luminaries, Stephen King, Peter Straub, and the Great God Ray Bradbury would be in those same pages. true poetry. His prose had always defined my idea of serious poetry. Then I thought even harder about my sordid poetical past and remembered a few bits of verse that lacked any references to bodily excretions or naughty parts that actually made an impact over the years. This was what I was frantically searching for some crumb of respect for the art because I suddenly very much wanted to try it.
