Willie B January 20, 2000
Web posted at: 5:09 p.m. EST (2209 GMT) ATLANTA (CNN) Willie B., one of the best-known animals at Zoo Atlanta and one of the most famous gorillas in captivity, is being treated for pneumonia. Zoo officials said they are optimistic he will recover. Willie developed an upper respiratory infection during the Christmas holidays, which progressed to the most serious health problem Willie B. has experienced in captivity, said marketing director Gail Eaton. The 41-year-old silverback gorilla drew national attention in 1994 when he became a father after spending years in isolation.

Overview There are more than 50 kinds of pneumonia that range in seriousness from mild to life-threatening. In infectious pneumonia, bacteria, viruses, fungi or other organisms attack your lungs, leading to inflammation that makes it hard to breathe. Pneumonia can affect one or both lungs. Infection of both lungs is sometimes popularly referred to as double pneumonia. In many cases pneumonia follows a common cold or the flu, but it also can be associated with other illnesses or occur on its own. It's best to do everything you can to prevent pneumonia, but if you do get sick, recognizing and treating the disease early offers the best chance for a full recovery.

Pneumonia, not meningitis, likely killed woman
The hotel in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, was quarantined for eight hours Sunday. CHERRY HILL, New Jersey (CNN) Medical authorities said Sunday they suspected that a woman attending a convention in suburban Philadelphia died of pulmonary bacteria pneumonia and not meningitis, as initially thought. Joanne Hemstreet, 45, of Kingston, Massachusetts, died early Sunday at Kennedy Memorial Hospital in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, according to hospital officials, at least four days after coming down with flu-like symptoms. "We don't know the exact cause of her demise at this time, though ... this looks like a case of Pneumococcal pneumonia with a very severe complication," said Dr. David Condoluci, the hospital's chief of infectious diseases. The hospital admitted six women and one man staying at the same Hilton Hotel in Cherry Hill, about 10 miles southeast of Philadelphia.

A course of zinc costs just 15 US cents Young children with severe pneumonia may benefit from taking zinc supplements, a study suggests.
Doctors in Bangladesh say it can help children to recover more quickly from the disease. Pneumonia kills more children than any other disease, almost all of them in developing countries. Writing in The Lancet, doctors from the Centre for Health and Population Research and Bloomberg School of Public Health at the Johns Hopkins University said giving children zinc could help save many lives. Pneumonia often affects children with low birth weight or those whose immune systems are weakened by malnutrition or other diseases. It kills two million children each year. The cost savings could be substantial
Researchers As part of this study, 270 infants between the ages of two and 23 months were given either 20mg of zinc per day or a dummy pill in addition to conventional antibiotics. Faster recovery They found that children given zinc recovered an average of one day earlier than those who had been given dummy pills. They also left hospital one day earlier, on average.

Corona virus: The likely cause Sars is a serious respiratory virus, which killed nearly 800 people worldwide in the months following its emergence in November 2002. The World Health Organization announced that the outbreak had been contained in the following July. However, experts predict the virus will continue to pose a threat - and warn that health authorities need to be ever vigilant for its return. When is Sars likely to pose the biggest threat?
Scientists predict that the virus which causes Sars is likely to re-emerge in cold weather, in a similar fashion to the viruses which cause flu. However, they have stressed that the number of cases is unlikely to be on the scale of the 2002/03 outbreak. What are the dangers of Sars spreading? The best way to stop the spread of Sars is to isolate people with the virus and those thought to have been in contact with them. In this case, officials have quarantined 25 people who have been in contact with the patient.

Citiva virusi care cauzeaza pneumonia: virusul gripal, virusul respirator, virusul paragripal, si adenovirusul.

Pneumonia Prevention: It's Worth A Shot
Facts for Patients About Pneumococcal Disease
What is Pneumococcal Disease?
Pneumococcal (pronounced new-mo-KOK-al) disease is an infection caused by bacteria. These bacteria can attack different parts of the body. When they invade the lungs, they cause the most common kind of bacterial pneumonia. When the same bacteria attack blood cells, they cause an infection called bacteremia (bak-ter-E-me-ah). And in the brain, they cause meningitis. Pnemococcal pneumonia is a serious illness that kills thousands of older people in the United States each year.
Can Pneumonia Be Prevented?
Yes. The pneumococcal vaccine is safe, it works, and one shot lasts most people a lifetime. People who get the vaccine are protected against almost all of the bacteria that cause pneumococcal pneumonia and other pneumococcal diseases as well. The shot, which is covered by Medicare, can be a lifesaver.

HEALTH LIBRARY Health Library Pneumonia Understanding infections QUICKVOTE Is the mystery illness striking soldiers in the Persian Gulf related to Gulf War illness?
Yes No VIEW RESULTS (CNN) Two epidemiological teams investigating pneumonia cases among U.S. military personnel in the Persian Gulf region have so far found nothing indicating they were caused by unusual factors, an Army doctor said Tuesday. There have been about 100 cases of pneumonia among military personnel in the area since March 1. Fifteen of those had to be treated with respirators, and two later died. As of Tuesday, no evidence existed that the pneumonia cases were caused by exposure to chemical or biological weapons, said Col. Robert DeFraites, chief of preventive medicine of the Army surgeon general's office. SARS and Legionnaires' disease also were ruled unlikely, DeFraites said. In addition, he said that medical teams have found no connection at all with Gulf War Syndrome, a variety of symptoms and illnesses that developed among troops involved in the Persian Gulf War in 1991.

Yeltsin in hospital, doctors suspect pneumonia
November 30, 1999
Web posted at: 3:13 a.m. EST (0813 GMT) MOSCOW (Reuters) The Kremlin declined to comment on President Boris Yeltsin's health early on Tuesday but NTV television said doctors were likely to gather shortly to decide whether he had pneumonia. Yeltsin was taken to hospital on Monday after doctors detected signs he might be developing pneumonia. His spokesman said he would stay in hospital for about a week. Last week a viral infection and bronchitis forced him to postpone the signing of a landmark union treaty with ex-Soviet neighbour Belarus.
