The story behind my nickname, "aardvark"...
My freshman year of college, I was sitting around with a couple of guys on my floor, Damien and Sean. Damien decided we were going to come up with nicknames for each other. When it came to me, Sean said he was going to call me "armadillo" but then he suddenly changed his mind and said "aardvark." So there you have it, I have no idea where it came from! (Of course, we called him "sunshine" that sort of came out of the blue too...) Here's a picture of Aardvark and Sunshine: Anyway, the nickname sort of stuck for the rest of the year, but then Sean didn't come back to school the next year and I figured... well, I was wrong. As I was moving in the next year, I heard my RA, Liza, yelling from the third floor window - "AARDVARK!!!" Apparently I was stuck with it for another year. The guys on my new floor picked up on it and called me "varkie," and Liza and all my other suitemates all came up with animal nicknames for each other. So then Liza graduated, but I have remained friends with both her and Sean, so I think I am pretty much stuck with "aardvark" for a while...

in the magazine mission donations Examinations An Examination of Low by Eric Hoffman Since at least 1994, the Duluth, Minnesota-based band Low has been creating among the most distinct and expressive sounds in American music. Their arrangements are simple, yet elegant, with vast expanses of sound foregrounding a hushed silence. There is an expressly passionate and human quality to their music, interplay between the depth of sadness and the height of transcendence. Their movement between these two emotional (and spiritual) extremes gives the music its drama. Their lyrics are intelligently accessible: spoken, they appear deceptively anti-poetic, but given the strength of vocalists Alan Sparhawk and Mimi Parker (always a tenor of strength and yearning), the words are transformed. In Low, word and music are seamless. A listener cannot begin to imagine which came first in the songwriting process. They seem born into one another, twin expressions of the same emotion. I should note that these songwriters are devoutly religious, which is plain enough in the music, I think, as in it one senses a deep spiritual longing for transcendence of the material world. At their very best, Low's music is slow, spacious, moody, depressing, transcendent, elegant, in much the same way as a painting by Mark Rothko. I'm thinking of some songs in particular: Words, and Sea from 1994's

Herds of Platypi? A Critical Reading of Chapter 8 of Lila Thomas Op de Coul
December 2002
Introduction
Let me start with a quote from a book I read recently: "There are two kinds of people. In different fields they go by different names. In comparative linguistics they are known as the lumpers and the splitters. The lumpers like to put many languages into few families. The splitters like to inspect the resulting lumps and find fault lines." As the author of the book, I am a self-confessed splitter. I am not a person, at the moment at least, for big systems. I have the tendency to try and find anomalies, cracks, small holes in these systems. So please do not think of me as primarily negative towards the MOQ - it is just my way of dealing with texts and theories. And it is definitely a way to get through to the heart of both the theory and yourself. Let's go to the heart then. In the second half of Chapter 8, Pirsig identifies four Platypi in SOM: Quality, Scientific Reality, Causation and Substance. I will take these one by one.
