84. Common Questions About Wildflowers And Native Plants
Common Questions about wildflowers and Native plants. A wildflower, also called a forb, is a native plant that grows without human care.

Common Questions about
Wildflowers and Native Plants
Mary H. Meyer Extension Horticulturist, University of Minnesota
Peter Olin Director, Minnesota Landscape Arboretum
What is the difference between a native plant, wildflower, and an "exotic" (non-native) or introduced plant? A native plant is usually defined as one that was growing naturally in a specific area before white or European settlement. A wildflower, also called a forb, is a native plant that grows without human care. Non-native plants are sometimes called "exotics", whether they were introduced hundreds of years ago by settlers and travelers, or recently purchased from a mail order nursery catalog. People, however, aren’t the only agents in plant relocation; they are spread through the actions of birds, animals, wind, and water. Are native plants easier to grow? It depends on the plant, and the garden site. Many natives, like brown-eyed susan ( Rudbeckia hirta ) and purple coneflower ( Echinacea purpurea ), are easy to grow in a wide range of conditions and are found in many states. Others are specific to a certain area and add a unique regional flavor to the landscape.

The Natural Landscaping Alternative: An Annotated Slide Collection

Native plants provide a beautiful, hardy, drought resistant, low maintenance landscape while benefiting the environment. This Annotated Slide Collection contains fifty slides selected for their ability to define natural landscaping and explain its benefits, to illustrate applications of natural landscaping, and to demonstrate installation and management techniques. The annotations corresponding to the slides are not intended to serve as a script but to provide background to assist in the development of a presentation. We hope that you find the slides and annotations helpful.

Garden Layout - Plants - Wildflowers There isn't really the space in my garden for a bed or a patch devoted to native wildflowers, but, as these are something of a passion for Mrs Taz, I usually grow a mixture of them in a trough or a planter. Rather than planting a patch of, say, cornflowers, I mix the seeds and scatter them, so that it's a complete surprise as to what flowers where. Some of the seed is from proprietary mixtures, so half the time, I don't even know what it is I've planted, but that merely adds to the surprise. The mixture currently includes the following species....
  • Aquilegia vulgaris
  • Calendula
  • Cornflowers
  • Lathyrus sylvestris (Wood Pea)
  • Nigella (Love-in-a-mist)
  • Night-scented Stock
  • Poppies
  • Viola riviniana

Michael Pollan's "Second Nature" deals, in part,
with the impossibility of spelling out the "natural"
part of the ecco-system. He makes the point that
nature is ever changing and that these changes are an intergal part of the natural process. He sees the gardener who mimics the ways of nature as a resource who can contribute to the cleaning of the damaged eco-system. Michael Pollan wants the gardener to learn "to think like a carrot". I found it to be a delightfull read and he talks about important stuff in a very light and charming way. This book is listed in Appendix B of the FAQ at: http://sunsite.unc.edu/rge Bottom line, he will say something like, "garden in an environmentally friendly way and, in turn, nature will establish an appropriate and viable eco-system."

Find the New York Native Plant Society or something with a similar name. Almost all states have Native Plant societies, and most of them propogate and sell native plants in a way that does not harm the eco-system. In addition, they know how and when to plant them, which ones are eaten by endangered species (especially butterflies), and much more. The California Native Plant Society has been a valuable resource for me, and I've bought a lot of plants either from them or from nurseries they know of, that nobody's ever heard of. We are honor-bound to follow our best, most honest, humble, guess about what is right and true. me (Jan Parcel)
