Nestled in the Shawnee National Forest, just minutes south of Carbondale, the area was named for the unique impressions made by its massive sandstone structures. Eons of geological faulting and folding have molded a landscape like none other, which is now clothed in lush garments of fern, moss, large flowering mints, hundreds of species of wild flowers and 75-plus varieties of towering trees. The natural splendor of Giant City has made it a renowned retreat that attracts more than 1.2 million visitors annually.
History Shelter bluffs, or rock shelters, worn into the sides of the cliffs have revealed evidence of human habitation in this region from as early as 10,000 years ago, and the blackened ceilings caused by their fires are still visible today. On an 80-foot sandstone cliff near the main entrance, one can see the remains of a Native American stone wall that was erected between A.D. 600-800. The first European settlers moved into the area from Kentucky and Tennessee in the early 1800s, and by 1850, settlers were using the land to cultivate fruit trees. During the Civil War, many of the cliffs and canyons were used as havens by soldiers of both the Union and Confederate armies.

3 Understand that in nature, a wildflower meadow has two to three flowers blooming at one time. These are mainly perennial plants.
http://www.gardeningcolorado.com/plants/wldflwrs.htm
Wildflowers W ildflower meadows have become a big trend in landscaping, particularly here in Colorado where they exist in profusion both on the plains and in the mountains. Following are a few tips on what to do correctly to achieve each and every year a meadow worth having. Always start with a weed-free area. Use only sheep or hard fescue for seeding with wildflower seed. Do not use other native and reclamation grasses that could become invasive or get tall and rangy looking. This will create a messy look and distract from those wildflowers. Understand that in nature, a wildflower meadow has two to three flowers blooming at one time. These are mainly perennial plants. Always overseed each year in the spring with an annual seed mix to ensure full color all three seasons. Because annuals do not readily reseed to began with, it is important to overseed each year. Control weeds as they come up with selective pulling or careful application of Round-up to only kill those weeds. Don't let the weeds take over. Add ornamental and structural interest in the meadow such as boulders, buried in ground, or a clump of birch or aspen.

67. Lake Huron Shore Plants
Contains many of wildflowers found around Lake Huron and on Thunder Bay Island.
http://www.msue.msu.edu/iosco/huronplants.htm
Plants of the Coastal Zone of Lake Huron Thunder Bay Island has over 250 species of plants. Here we show the most colorful wildflowers that bloom on the island. Most of these plants can be found from Port Huron to Mackinaw City along the shore, in their preferred habitats. Here we see a typical field in mid-summer. There are no deer on the island, so everything is in a pristine and naturally balanced state with the climate, nutrient regime and pests. Click image for larger view Canada anemone on the left and blueflag on the right (above) make a beautiful site along the rocky shores and the wetland pockets. In places the entire shore is speckled white in early spring with the anemones. Sandy beach and dunal habitat is rare on the Island, but rocky foreshore, moist backshore, old field, and deep woods habitats abound. An old jeep trail through the island (above) is now grown over with forget-me-nots. The thumbnail photos below can be clicked to large size for better viewing.

78. Roadside Wildflowers In Floyd County, Georgia
Photos of wildflowers taken along a road at Berry College and list of rare plants in the county.
http://geocities.com/zvezuk/
A HISTORY OF BOTANICAL OBSERVATIONS FOR FLOYD COUNTY, GEORGIA
Floyd County has the most diverse plants population in Georgia due to its Valley and Ridge geological composition, its mild climate, and its rivers - the Oostanula, the Etowah, and the Coosa. In the 19th century, unknown plants were discovered here and the scientific community has been exploring this area ever since. Alvan W. Chapman (1809-1899), a physician and botanist from Florida, visited Floyd County in 1872, 1882 and 1891. Chapman discovered Scutellaria montana Chapm., Large-flowered Skullcap, and Viburnum bracteatum Rehder, Limerock Arrow-Wood. Today, there are endangered spicies. In the slow-moving water of the Horseleg Creek, near the Coosa River, Chapman collected the first specimen of Isoetes Engelmanni var.georgiana Engelm., ( ), Appalachian quillwort. Chapman also made the first discovery of Crataegus triflora Chapm, Three-Flower Hawthorn, and Aureolaria patula (Chapman) Pennell, Spreding Yellow Foxglove, in Floyd County. Gratiola viscidula Pennell var.
