From Where and When?
The details of photosynthetic pigments and pathways and patterns of sexual life cycles make it clear that the higher land plants, like the Bryophytes, evolved from the green algae (Chlorophyta). Morphological and molecular data suggest that the Charaphytes are the most likely source group within the green algae and that the Liverworts (see the Bryophytes page) were the first green plants to make the transition to land and that more complex land plants are derived from the mosses and/or hornworts). The break-through adaptation for real success on land was a transport system for water and nutrients known as the vascular system Vascular System All the more complex land plants possess a vascular system made up of two tissue types - xylem and phloem . For this reason, the term vascular plants is virtually synonomous with complex land plants. Xylem cells are dead at maturity and consist of three main cell types - tracheids (the most primitive water-conducting cells)

Vascular Plants Scientific classification Kingdom Plantae Subkingdom: Tracheobionta Divisions
  • Non-seed-bearing plants Superdivision Spermatophyta The Subkingdom Tracheobionta encompasses those plants in the Kingdom Plantae that have specialized cells for conducting water and sap within their tissues. Thus, the term vascular plants vascular flowering plants , conifers and allies (former gymnosperms), and ferns , but not mosses or more "primitive" plants collectively called the nonvascular plants. These plants are differentiated from the nonvascular plants in two important ways:
  • Vascular plants have water-carrying tissues, termed tracheids, in their tissues, enabling the plants to evolve larger and more elaborate structures, while non-vascular plants lack these. In vascular plants, the principal generation phase is the sporophyte , which is diploid with two sets of chromosomes per cell. In non-vascular plants, the principal generation phase is often the gametophyte , which is haploid with one set of chromosomes per cell.

Home Botany 1050 Introduction to Botany Spring 2004 INTRODUCTION TO VASCULAR PLANTS I. Two major types of true plants: A. Vascular (higher) plants: 1. Have true conducting tissues (xylem and phloem), leaves, stems and roots 2. The sporophytes are the dominant phase and the gametophytes are much reduced 3. Constitutes the majority of plants B. Non-vascular (lower) plants 1. Lack true conducting tissues, leaves and roots. Since they lack elaborate conducting tissues they are relatively small 2. The gametophytes are the dominant phase and the sporophytes are dependent upon them 3. Require water for fertilization so they must grow in moist or seasonally moist habitats II. Earliest land plants: A. The invasion of land by plants probably occurred about 450 million years ago because by 430 million years ago there were many fossil land plants B. The earliest land plants were relatively simple and undifferentiated (see p. 433) 1. They had dichotomously branched photosynthetic axes that lacked true leaves and roots 2. Specialization led to differentiation of these simple axes into roots, stems and leaves

plants are either vascular or nonvascular. vascular plants have tube-like structures that transport water from the roots to the stem to the leaves.

Families
At any one time in history, there are millions of different kinds of plants and animals in the world. In 1753, a scientist in Sweden named Carolus Linnaeus thought of an orderly system for classifying plants and animals . He grouped all organisms according to a two-part name ( binomial ). The first part of the name is the "generic" grouping or genus . The second part is the "specific" grouping or species . Scientists today still use this basic idea of his system, but modern classifications systems are much more complicated having many levels of hierarchical organization. For example, taxonomic systems group organisms according to structure and physiological connections between organisms. Phylogenic systems classify based on genetic connections. Evolution theories have impacted modern classification.
