PSILOTOPHYTA (WHISK FERNS) The subphylum Psilotophyta (Psilophyta or Psilopsida) represents the most primitive vascular plants. These plants arose in the Silurian and Devonian and are characterized by the presence of tracheids, but they lack true roots or leaves. The group is probably completely extinct, although two genera ( Psilotum and Tmesipteris , neither found in North America) are sometimes placed as members of this primitive group.

Founded by Dr. Thomas Pullen in 1963, the collection now consists of over 65,000 vascular plant specimens, as well as non-vascular plants, slime molds and woods. With funding from the National Science Foundation , the collection is now housed in new cabinets on a compactor system and the specimen data is being entered into a searchable database.

Oregon Flora Project Homepage Oregon Flora Newsletter Project Participants Oregon Vascular Plant Checklist Oregon Plant Atlas ... Oregon State University Oregon is blessed with an enormous diversity of plants ranging from the insectivorous cobra lilies of southern serpentines to the stunning mountain heathers of the Wallowas. The Oregon Flora Project will provide a wide variety of information on all of Oregon's fascinating plants.
Oregon Flora Project Features:
  • A Checklist: an up-to-date list of Oregon's native and naturalized vascular plants.
  • Online searchable database for the Asteraceae portion of the checklist.
The text version of the May 2000 Oregon Vascular Plant Checklist: Asteraceae , published by Dr. Kenton Chambers and Dr. Scott Sundberg.
  • An Oregon Plant Atlas that will be available to all Internet users.
Users of the online Atlas will be able to select any native or naturalized vascular plant species in Oregon and retrieve a map such as the one shown above. Further information can be obtained on locality, habitat, elevation, associated species, collection date, and collecter by clicking on an individual dot. Sensitive information, such as exact locality data of endangered plants, will be protected. Slides, such as the one shown here of the Oregon iris, will also be available online.
  • A Flora of Oregon : an identification manual with keys, descriptions and illustrations of Oregon plants, available in both printed and electronic forms.

A H ISTORY OF P ALAEOZOIC F ORESTS H ANS K ERP This paper was originally published in German in Natur und Museum ( 1996, Vol. 126, No. 12, pp. 421 - 430 ) under the title: The December 1996 issue of Natur und Museum contains four contributions to Palaeozoic Palaeobotany and can still be ordered from:

Fax: 00-49-69-74 62 38 This web version contains the original illustrations as appeared in the printed version and over links directly related to the history of Palaeozoic forests. Clicking the high-lighted key words in the text brings you to an index of links from where you can start your virtual palaeobotany tour around the world. As some groups of plants appear to be more common on the web than others, we have added some photos from our own archives to complete this selection. These photos are of course particularly recommended! Because the various researchers sometimes use different names for the same (groups of) plants, careful readers might notice some inconsistencies in the naming of the fossil plants. This also applies to the names of geological periods. A History of Palaeozoic Forests
Contents:
Early land plants The Carboniferous coal swamp forests The floral change at the end of the Westphalian Is there a floral break in the Permian?

General Plant Organization Back to Top
A plant has two organ systems : 1) the shoot system, and 2) the root system. The shoot system is above ground and includes the organs such as leaves, buds, stems, flowers (if the plant has any), and fruits (if the plant has any). The root system includes those parts of the plant below ground, such as the roots, tubers , and rhizomes Major organ systems of the plant body. The above image (left) is from Purves et al., Life: The Science of Biology , 4th Edition, by Sinauer Associates ( www.sinauer.com ) and WH Freeman ( www.whfreeman.com ), used with permission. The above illustration (right) is from gopher://wiscinfo.wisc.edu:2070/I9/.image/.bot/.130/Intr._Plant_Body_Spring_/Primary_130_Lab_Images/Bean_whole_morphology Plant cells are formed at meristems, and then develop into cell types which are grouped into tissues . Plants have only three tissue types: 1) Dermal Ground ; and 3) Vascular . Dermal tissue covers the outer surface of herbaceous plants. Dermal tissue is composed of epidermal cells, closely packed cells that secrete a waxy cuticle that aids in the prevention of water loss. The ground tissue comprises the bulk of the primary plant body. Parenchyma, collenchyma, and sclerenchyma cells are common in the ground tissue. Vascular tissue transports food, water, hormones and minerals within the plant. Vascular tissue includes xylem, phloem, parenchyma, and cambium cells.
