Although in some cases, only a part of the plant (seeds, berries, leaves, bark, sprouts, tubers, etc.) might be poisonous, this list rules out the whole plant.
If you have any of these plants, keep them safely out of kitty's reach. Should your pet ingest part of a poisonous plant, rush the cat to the vet. Take the plant with you for identification. National Animal Poison Control Center Keep the Phone Number handy - (888)4ANI-HELP.

Common Indoor Plants Poisonous to Dogs
In assessing the risk to your dog from these plants, you need to consider both the age of your dog and it's propensity to chew on plants. Many of the below toxic plants rarely cause problems because most dogs don't chew them the exceptions being, of course, young puppies who are inclined to explore the world with their mouths, teething dogs who may chew on everything, and older dogs that are simply fond of chewing. Oleander, for example, is rather toxic, but most cases of poisoning involve 1) cattle, other grazing livestock 2) puppies and 3) human babies/toddlers. Dumb cane is probably the one plant that should always be kept out of reach, since it takes only one nibble to have a potentially fatal situation.

Plants Poisonous to your Pets
Whether in the garden or in your home, plants provide us with immense beauty. Unfortunately, many of those plants are also poisonous to pets. Plants which are not toxic to people, like the hibiscus and the Easter lily family, may cause renal failure in cats and excessive fluid loss in dogs. A morsel of mistletoe can cause digestive upset as well as irregular heartbeats and possible cardiac shock in pets. Common houseplants, like the philodendron can cause your pet's mouth and throat to swell, making her unable to eat. Because pets chew on almost anything, you'll want to remove or secure plants that are especially dangerous to your pet. Australian Native Poisonous Plants
Dr Ross McKenzie
Plant poisoning is nationally important to Australia. About a thousand species of plants here are known to be toxic to livestock and humans. Poisoning of livestock by the more important of these costs us about $100 million each year. Deaths of cattle from plant poisoning in Queensland cost over $10 million yearly. Sixty percent of the toxic plants in Australia are native to this country and have their major economic effect on agricultural enterprises which produce livestock by grazing native pastures. These industries contribute significantly to export-generated income and thus to our prosperity as a nation. This makes the reduction of the effects of plant poisoning on livestock one of the serious concerns of the pastoral industries. The toxic native species belong to about 70 of the over 200 native plant families in Australia. Families with more than 10 toxic species include the legumes (Fabaceae, Mimosaceae), the nightshades and tobaccos (Solanaceae), the spurges (Euphorbiaceae), the grasses (Poaceae), the cycads (Cycadaceae, Zamiaceae), the saltbushes (Chenopodiaceae), the riceflowers (Thymelaeaceae) and the buttercups (Ranunculaceae). Some genera are generally toxic (for example Macrozamia and Pimelea ), but it is important to note that a number of important toxic species (for example

Health Safety Expert: Martin Simenc , child safety expert Are poinsettias or any other holiday plants poisonous? Age 3 to 8 Contrary to a stubborn myth that refuses to die, poinsettias are not poisonous to humans. Consuming large amounts of any plant can cause cramping and diarrhea, but no one has ever died or become seriously ill from eating poinsettias. Your pets, however, may have a bad reaction if they munch on these plants, so you'd be wise to keep them out of Fido's range. The plant to really beware of this season is mistletoe. While standing beneath it may earn you the pleasure of a kiss or two, ingesting the stuff will cause severe stomach cramps and diarrhea and can even be fatal. If you decide to hang a sprig over your doorway, make sure it's well secured and won't be knocked to the floor where pets and young children could happen upon it. list of emergency numbers by the phone. Also, keep in mind that plants can present other types of hazards to young children, even if they're not poisonous. Check their soil to make sure it contains no rocks or solid items that your child could choke on or surface fertilizer that could be toxic. The most frequently overlooked plant-related hazard is actually that posed by heavy pots that could fall on your child. Never place a heavy pot on a stand that could be shaken or toppled by a determined toddler. And watch out for dangling leaves or vines that she could use to pull a large plant over on her.

Common Arkansas Plants Poisonous to Cattle
Authors: John Jennings, Professor - Extension Livestock Specialist - Forages
John Boyd , Professor - Extension Weed Specialist Livestock are accidentally poisoned in Arkansas each year from eating toxic plants in hay and pasture forage crops. What is a poisonous plant? It is one that causes such problems as animal sickness, skin irritation, loss of appetite, loss of weight, reduced milk production or death. All poisonous plants do not contain the same toxin. There are at least six different classes of poisons within plants. The two largest groups are alkaloids and glycosides. Within each of the six classes are several different poisonous compounds. Twenty-one weeds are listed in this publication. They are among the 45 most common poisonous plants in Arkansas. However, their presence on a farm does not mean that animals will be killed or even show ill effects. The reasons are that (1) animals may not eat them, (2) the plants may not contain toxic levels of the poison at the time they are eaten, (3) animals eating the plants may be immune to the poisons they contain, (4) animals may not eat the poisonous part of the plant or (5) farmers may have rendered plants nontoxic by making hay or silage of them, by diluting the material eaten with other forage or by feeding certain materials to counteract the poison. Some plants are likely to be a greater hazard to animal health than others because they (l) are so abundant in an area, (2) contain a more deadly poison or (3) because animals seek them out for selective grazing. Livestock losses due to poisonous plants may be reduced or eliminated by weed control, by grazing practices, by keeping tame forage stands healthy and thick, by using caution during drought periods and by diluting contaminated feed with forage known to be free of poisonous materials.

PLANTS POIS ONOUS T O PETS Thanks to Roberta Malott for the idea for this page, and to Bob Hayes for the start of the list. Also, a BIG THANK YOU to Margaret Martin who typed her fingers to the bone to send me most of this list. These are my Yorkie list friends, and I'm so glad to have them.
These pages may be printed out for your own use,
but may not be used on any other web site. Everyone has my
permission to link to these pages if they so wish. For a quick print out of just the plants on this page, click here. Back to Home Page Some plants are known by different names. If you are ever in doubt, you should check with your local nursery. For instance the Calendula. It has a variety of names such as "Pot Marigold" and "Marsh Marigold". It is a deadly plant and has killed pets. I've come to the conclusion that plants and pets do NOT mix. I urge you to take every precaution with your precious pets and keep them away from ALL plants. Toads Another thing you should watch out for is Toads especially the Colorado River Toad. The toads have a sac on their back legs that excretes a strong poison.
