Fact Sheet #6
Gardening with Native Plants:
General Introduction
Go for Green - The Active Living and Environment Program, encourages outdoor physical activity that protects, enhances or restores the environment. When we Go for Green, we improve our own health, through active living and the health of the planet, by being good environmental citizens. Gardening is active living. Is it the second most popular physical activity in Canada, it offers the opportunity for lifelong participation, and can be a positive contributor to the natural environment. One of the most positive gardening trends over the last few yearsalong with the growing commitment of gardeners to organic practiceshas been the increased interest in native plant gardening. People across Canada are looking to the natural landscapes of woodlands, meadows, prairies and wetlands for inspiration in their gardens, recreating back and front yard habitats that are based on models found in nature. The environmental reasons for gardening with native plants are positive and compelling. Native plant gardens:

Plants are the very foundation of life on earth. Along with cyanobacteria and algae , plants convert light energy from the sun into chemical energy stored in carbohydrates like starches and sugars. They accomplish this through a process called photosynthesis , which requires chemical compounds called photosynthetic pigments . By far the most common of these pigments is chlorophyll, which gives plants their green color. All other organinisms depend on the photosynthesizers for survival. Unable to obtain energy directly from the sun, animals must eat plants (or one another) and break down the energy contained in their tissues. The final link in the cycle are decomposers like bacteria and fungi who convert dead plants and animals back into raw materials which new plants can use again. Thus the whole web of life is driven by the sun's light, trapped and stored by the plants. (The one exception are some bacteria which can obtain energy directly from chemicals in their environment.) Besides harnessing solar energy, plants perform a second vital function: they produce oxygen. The process of photosynthesis uses carbon dioxide and releases oxygen. This is the opposite of what happens when we breathe- we take in oxygen and release carbon dioxide.

    General Properties of Parasitic Plants
The following are some general properties of parasitic plants.
  • Nutrients and water are transported via a physiological bridge, called the haustorium A parasite connects its vascular system (at least one of the tissues) to that of the host plant. The parasite may totally discard its own photosynthesis. Parasites may be mostly exposed at the surface of the host ( epiparasite ) or mostly hidden within the host organ endoparasite ). The endoparasitic portion is composed of thread-like haustoria permeating the host tissue with a sinker , a single structure that becomes embedded in the host tissue.
  • Parasites become established via germination. Seeds land on the host tissue, for stem parasites especially in bird droppings, and germinate after reading a chemical stimulus from the host. A modified lateral root becomes an haustorium; this root is chemotrophic , i.e., responding to a chemical gradient, and contacts the host epidermis. The root then attaches by pushing against the plant and forming a disc, called a hapteron , and secretes a polysaccharide adhesive. The root tip then mechanically penetrates the host, apparently without enzymatic digestion, and establishes a vascular connection by attaching vessels and positioning phloem next to leaky host phloem.

    http://www.co2science.org/subject/l/summaries/ltwoodygeneral.htm
Long-Term Studies (Woody Plants - General) Summary How will earth's trees and shrubs respond to the ongoing rise in the air's CO content? Many people have speculated many different things about this question, some proposing the planet's woody plants will dramatically increase their growth rates and sequester much of the CO released to the atmosphere by the burning of fossil fuels (Idso 1991a,b) and others claiming earth's trees and shrubs will do just the opposite and turn into carbon sources in the not too distant future (see our Editorials of 1 December 1999 and 30 May 2001 ). Is one of these assessments correct? Or does the truth lie somewhere between the two extremes? In an attempt to shed some light on this question, Idso (1999) analyzed the results of 176 different atmospheric CO enrichment experiments that had been conducted over the years on woody plants that were grown in containers having finite rooting volumes (small pots, in layman's language), finding that almost any conceivable growth response could be obtained initially. As time progressed, however, nearly all of the responses tended rapidly towards zero, suggesting that any early CO -induced growth enhancements observed in root-restricted woody plants were unlikely to persist beyond about five years. In contrast, the results of four studies in which trees were grown out-of-doors and rooted in the ground, so as not to experience any root restrictions, indicated that the increase in growth induced by a 300 ppm increase in atmospheric CO

A plant patent is granted by the Government to an inventor (or the inventor's hiers or assigns) who has invented or discovered and asexually reproduced a distinct and new variety of plant, other than a tuber propagated plant or a plant found in an uncultivated state. The grant, which lasts for 20 years from the date of filing the application, protects the inventor's right to exclude others from asexually reproducing, selling, or using the plant so reproduced. This protection is limited to a plant in its ordinary meaning:
