HARVARD GAZETTE ARCHIVES Oldest Known Flowering Plants Identified By Genes By William J. Cromie
Gazette Staff
The water lily's origins go back more than 140 million years. Photo by Michael Donoghue. Amborella , the plant is the one remaining species of a lineage that first appeared on Earth more than 140 million years ago, while dinosaurs still ruled the planet. The other flowering plants, from which it branched, evolved and diversified until they came to dominate Earth at about the same time as the mammalian ancestors of humans were replacing dinosaurs. Flowering plants now number 250,000 different species, including virtually all the vegetables and grains we eat, as well as most of the food of the animals that we consume. "It’s difficult to imagine a world without flowering plants," says Michael Donoghue, professor of biology at Harvard University. As a result of analyzing the genes from all flowering plants suspected of being among the world’s oldest, Donoghue and research associate Sarah Mathews concluded that Amborella and water lilies are the first two branches on the family tree of flowering plants.

Plants that have good growing conditions are unlikely to produce many flowers, but instead will form many green leaves and increase their size rapidly. Flowers are plant organs of reproduction. Flowering enables sexual reproduction to take place and is a plant survival response. Some plants reproduce to form similar identical plants by sending out runners e.g. strawberry. This is termed asexual reproduction , as it does not require reproduction by flowering. In this Revision Bite we are going to look at:
  • Flower structure and function
  • Pollination and fertilisation

Producer of potted Orchid plants for the wholesale and retail market. flowering material available year round. Wholesale only.
http://www.matsuinursery.net
Home Company Contact News Products ... Price List Matsui Nursery, Inc. was founded in 1967 by Mr. Andy Matsui . Over the past 35 years Matsui Nursery has grown a number of diverse flower crops including Mums, Carnations, Roses, and many other Fresh Cut and Dried Flowers and Foliage, always trying to stay ahead of market trends.
Anticipating a new trend in the marketplace Mr. Matsui began, in 1998, to convert the nursery over to the production of Potted Orchid Plants. That conversion is now complete and we are now the largest potted Orchid producer in the world with over 2.5 million square feet of production area.
Located in the Salinas Valley of California we have an ideal climate for the production of a large variety of Orchids. Plenty of light, moderate daytime temperatures and cool nights even in the summertime allows us to produce almost any variety of Orchid and to have flowering material available year-round.
We have our own laboratory and produce many of our own plants in house, both mericlones and seedlings. We have an active breeding program to produce and introduce new varieties of Orchids for changing markets in the future. In addition we purchase seedling and mericlone stock from many sources around the world including Japan, Holland, Thailand, Taiwan, and Korea, and from domestic sources including Hawaii, Florida, and here in California.

Some plants reproduce to form similar identical plants by sending out runners - eg strawberries . This type of reproduction is simple copying and does not require flowers. However this asexual reproduction may not help a plant survive in the long-term, particularly if there is sudden change in the environment, because all the individual plants will be identical, and all will be equally badly affected. In contrast, sexual reproduction in flowering plants enable genetic material to be exchanged. This exchange creates variety in a new generation and aids survival of the plant species.
