New Jersey Laws Species There is not one endangered species list, there are many. Growing concern for the world's vanishing species has led to increased conservation action. The governments of many nations have passed protective laws and put aside national parks and other reserves for wildlife. Different governments, associations and international agencies keep different lists . A species can be considered endangered on one list, threatened on another list and not appear at all on a different list. In addition to these Internet resources the Morris County Library has many books and current magazines with detailed species information. Contact the reference department for help.

Threatened and Endangered Species of Alabama: A Guide to Assist with Forestry Activities
Introduction
http://southeast.fws.gov/daphne/specieslst.htm . Other sources of information include the Game and Fish and Natural Heritage Program sections of the Alabama Department of Natural Resources, the Alabama Forestry Commission, and university faculties in Alabama and neighboring states. A list of suggested contacts is provided in Appendix II at the end of this manual. The purpose of this manual is to help foresters, land owners, loggers, site preparation vendors, herbicide applicators, and other woods workers avoid violations of the Endangered Species Act., and, more importantly, avoid placing endangered species of plants and animals in further jeopardy, making their recovery even more difficult. Most forestry related activities will not affect endangered species. However, in a relatively few instances, there are potential conflicts between endangered species protection and some forestry and land management activities. In most cases, there are workable solutions to these conflicts. Compromises that protect the species in question, protect the woods worker, landowner, forester, and other involved people from prosecution under federal law, and allow the use of lands and other resources are the ideal and should be the goal of everyone.
Scope
Photographs of most of the listed species, a list of the counties in which they are known or strongly suspected to occur, approximate range maps in Alabama, and descriptions of the habitats in which they exist are included in the individual species accounts in this manual. Brief descriptions of the life histories and habitat needs of many of the species are also included. Ways in which logging or other forestry and land management activities might disturb or cause harm is also included in that section.

ENDANGERED PLANTS
Our planet has an incredible number of plant species which contribute in many subtle ways to the quality of our lives. Plants provide medicines, food, clothing, shelter, clean our air, cool our surroundings, hold moisture in the soil, and make oxygen for us to breathe. Many plant species have become extinct or endangered within the last 200 years, due directly or indirectly to man's activities. The loss of biodiversity threatens all remaining species, including humans. Habitat loss is the primary cause of plant species extinction. Natural habitat is disappearing at an alarming rate in Gaston County as the county becomes more urbanized. You can help protect rare, threatened, and endangered species by protecting natural habitat areas. Never pick flowers or fruits from endangered plants, and do not transplant these species to other areas. The chances of meeting their survival needs in a new site are slim.
The Schweinitz's Sunflower (Helianthus schweinitzii) is an endangered North Carolina plant that is found in very few spots in Gaston County. Schweinitz's Sunflower is found only in the Carolina Piedmont, where it is currently known from 1O populations in North Carolina and 6 in South Carolina. The North Carolina populations are located in Gaston, Anson, Montgomery, Davidson, Randolph, Union, Stanly, Cabarrus, Mecklenberg, and Rowan Counties.

  • Iowa has changed greatly since becoming a state in 1846. The prairies that helped develop the highly productive soils have been reduced by more than 99 percent. About 95 percent of the state's prairie pothole wetlands have been drained. Over half of the original forest has been lost. These changes and other factors such as channelization of streams and rivers, soil erosion, development and urban expansion, and intensive row crop agriculture have contributed to the loss or degradation of suitable habitat for numerous plant and animal species. Individual species of plants and animals may contribute to the survival of other species within a community. The loss of what appears to be an unimportant species may result in the decline or loss of species that we consider to be very important. If we ignore species that are in danger of being extirpated from Iowa, we may be making decisions that cannot be reversed in the future. Conserving these species for future generations requires the coordinated effort by public agencies, private organizations, and property owners.

The IUCN Red List is the world's most comprehensive inventory of the global conservation status of plants and animals. It uses a set of criteria to evaluate the extinction risk of thousands of species and subspecies. These criteria are relevant to all species and all regions of the world. There are nine Categories of Threat in the IUCN Red List system: Extinct, Extinct in the Wild, Critically Endangered, Endangered, Vulnerable, Near Threatened, Least Concern Data Deficient , and Not Evaluated . A species is listed as threatened if it falls in the Critically Endangered, Endangered or Vulnerable categories.
The overall aim of the IUCN Red List is to convey the urgency and scale of conservation problems to the public and policy-makers, and to motivate the global community to try to reduce species extinctions.

Endangered and Threatened Plant and Insect Species Much of the character of Virginia has been altered by man since the early settlers of colonial times were first greeted by Virginia's continuous wilderness. Virginia is being transformed progressively into a cultural landscape which threatens the natural history of the Commonwealth. As a result of these changes, many species lead an uncertain and tenuous existence, surviving in fragments of their natural habitat, or as marginal species in a changing environment. Some 500 plants (nearly 20% of Virginia's flora) and many insect species have been identified as state species of "special concern" which because of their extreme rarity, could be lost from the state's flora and fauna if some measures of protection are not taken. Two state agencies, the

This publication is designed to help landowners, land managers, planners and developers understand the Federal Endangered Species Act so they can plan, design and implement farming, land development or other practices in harmony with the environment.
Animals or plants are classified as endangered if they face extinction throughout all or a large part of their range. Plants or animals are classified as threatened if they are likely to become endangered in the foreseeable future. Only a few animals and plants in Kentucky are endangered. Several animals, like the white-tailed deer, are more abundant today than at any other time during history.
Animals and plants can be abundant, common, rare, threatened or endangered in different parts of their ranges. For example, the American alligator has been classified as endangered or threatened in some areas, whereas in other areas it is abundant and may be legally harvested under the supervision of the state wildlife agency. The number and types of animals and plants listed as threatened or endangered changes constantly because new species are added or others are deleted. Unfortunately, species are usually removed from the list because they have become extinct. The list provided in this publication is subject to change. The most current information on endangered and threatened species in your area may be obtained by contacting the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, the Kentucky State Nature Preserves Commission or the Cooperative Extension Service.

The mere physical boundaries of a National Park do not guarantee a species survival. Nowhere is man's impact on other species more evident than in south Florida. Threatened, endangered and extinct are words that have become all too common in our 20th century vocabulary. The natural process of species evolution, taking hundreds and thousands of years, has accelerated rapidly since the turn of the century. Today because of man's desire for land and raw materials, his continued pollution and indiscriminate hunting many plant and wildlife species are on the brink of extinction. Drainage of wetlands, alteration of overland water flow and hunting have all contributed to species decline. The Everglades, once known for its abundant bird life, has seen its wading bird population decline drastically since the turn of the century. The Florida Panther once common throughout the state, today is on the verge of extinction. Within the four National Park areas of Everglades National Park, Biscayne National Park, Big Cypress National Preserve and Fort Jefferson National Monument there are 16 endangered and 6 threatened wildlife species. The mere physical boundaries of a National Park do not guarantee a species survival. Maintaining harmony between "20th century progress" and wilderness areas requires research, legislation and public awareness. For the last decade the South Florida Research Center, Everglades National Park, has been studying how changes occurring outside the parks influence the fragile areas within their boundaries. Research going on today may lead to a brighter future for many species.

The plants and environments of the South Florida region represent a key priority of Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden. Conservation activities include endangered species status surveys, monitoring and mapping of populations of endangered and threatened species, habitat-level vegetation inventories for sites of conservation concern, ecological studies of endangered species, species-level studies of reproductive biology and cultivation requirements, and reinstating populations of endangered species in the wild. Collections In 1989, the Garden formalized a program focused on Florida and Caribbean conservation research, emphasizing the study of endangered plants from the region. As part of the Center for Plant Conservation (CPC) consortium of botanic gardens and arboreta, Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden maintains a collection of more than 4,000 plants of about 100 species of endangered, threatened or rare plant species of South Florida, Puerto Rico and the U.S.Virgin Islands. Twenty-two federally listed endangered and/or threatened species are conserved in the Fairchild endangered species collection. The Fairchild Endangered Species Program follows collection guidelines established by the CPC's Science Advisory Council, which strongly emphasizes the preservation of wild populations. Plants in the collection are used for germplasm storage, propagation and cultivation research, study of the biology of endangered species, education, and as a source of propagules for reintroductions.

Endangered and Threatened Species Hawaiian Species Pacific Species Critical Habitat Updates Recovery Plans The Endangered Species Program conserves endangered and threatened species and the ecosystems upon which they depend. Conserving endangered and threatened species is necessary to preserve our natural heritage for future generations and to maintain our quality of life. Safeguarding ecosystems benefit all users of ecosystem resources and is essential to maintaining our nation's long term economic prosperity. A species can be listed under one of two categories, endangered or threatened, depending on its status and the degree of threat it faces. Endangered species are plants and animals that are in immediate danger of becoming extinct and need protection to survive. Threatened species are those that are declining in numbers and might become endangered if conservation efforts are not immediately taken.
As you browse through the endangered species section, you will learn that island ecosystems are very fragile and that island species depend on one another for survival. It will also become apparent that the major causes for the decline of some species are due to urban development, which takes over the limited habitat of native plants and animals, and the introduction of alien species, which compete for food and habitat and sometimes become predators of native species.
