The Plant Kingdom ( Plantae
(Last modified: 28 Sep 1997)
Plants provide nourishment for our bodies and souls. With the help of protists and fungi , plants provide the oxygen we breathe and the food that sustains us either directly or indirectly, by feeding other animals. Plants provide shade over our heads and cool carpets under our feet while surrounding us with beautiful colors and marking the change of seasons. Prominent plants give us a handle on ecological communities. Descriptions such as "Redwood-Tanoak Forest" or "Oak Grassland" indicate not only the plants we may find there but the animals, fungi, and climate as well. Classification of the plant kingdom can be especially confusing to the amateur naturalist. For example, according to modern botany:
  • A palm tree has more in common with a blade of grass than with other trees.
  • A strawberry plant is more closely related to an apple or apricot tree than to a clover or geranium.
  • A Ginko (Maidenhair) tree is so different from other plants that it is in a phylum by itself. But if you have to group it with other plants, it belongs with conifers such as Pine trees.
At least four classification systems are in common use: Plants are classified into 12 phyla or divisions based largely on reproductive characteristics; they are classified by

http://www.sysbot.org/aspt_abstract_query.html
American Society of Plant Taxonomists ASPT Publications This is an initial entry page for a prototype ASPT publications search system currently under development as an experimental ASPT-ICC TAMU-BWG BIOSIS project. The system provides access to all issues of the ASPT journal, Systematic Botany , currently indexed by BIOSIS (1981-85 issues will be available soon) and all issues of Brittonia that were published under the auspices of the ASPT (start to 1976). The system is based on a full-text index with each article representing a 'document'. It will will return all 'documents' that carry a string of characters matching the string inserted by the user in the box below. The 'Title and Author List' option will produce a listing with titles linked to abstracts whereas the 'Full Abstracts' option will bring up the full 'document'. Abstracts are available only for articles from Systematic Botany and these are indexed. Give it a try:
Title and Author List Full Abstracts The search/return system under development is a technology similar to that used for global network queries (Alta-Vista, HotBot, etc.) in that a database/SQL interface is not involved. It provides a relatively simple, efficent approach for WWW access to large files and a rapid response. However, as is the case with network 'search engines', there is a 'trade-off' for for speed and simplicity and this involves spurious returns. Distinct query strings ('rbcl', 'Asteraceae', etc.) will usually produce expected results, but others, such as 'ITS', will force the user to 'cull' returns for those that are relevant to the query.
