Flowering Plants - Origin and Classification

The flora of a true "Jurassic Park" would contain no flowering plants. Given the ubiquitous nature and aggressive tendencies of modern angiosperms, it would be difficult to keep flowering plants out of a large parkland today. However, during the Jurassic Period (180-135 million years ago), the global ecosystem - dominated by large reptiles - was fueled by non-flowering vascular plants (mostly spore producers [ferns and related types - the Pteridophytes ] and gymnosperms). Evidence of angiosperms appears in the fossil record near the beginning of the Cretaceous Period, about 125 million years ago and this is in the form of pollen. Archaic dicots and most monocots produce a relatively simple type of pollen - monosulcate - that has only a single, elongate pore through which the microgametophye emerges. This can be distinguished from the pollen of gymnosperms and this is the type this is rarely encountered in early Cretaceous sediments. However, as indicated by expansion and differentiation of angiospermous pollen , it appears that the flowering plants came to dominate the world's flora with - from a geologic perspective - remarkable speed . Elements referable to the dicot subclass Hamamelidae and Magnolidae

Improving on the systems of his predecessors, Linnaeus simplified plant taxonomy through the "binomial" system. Linnaeus' system uses one Latin name to indicate the genus, and another to indicate the specific epithet. Together, the genus and epithet comprise the "species." E.g., our plant taxonomy classifies bittersweet nightshade as Solanum dulcamara
  • Sometimes yet another word is added after the genus name and epithet, which is neither italicized nor set off by quotation marks the name of the person who first described the plant. These names are sometimes abbreviated. When the name is abbreviated as "L," it stands for "Linnaeus."

    Plant Taxonomy
Taxonomy is the classification of life forms into distinct groups. Linnaeus (Carl von Linné), a Swedish botanist of the 18th century developed the taxonomy of plants and initiated the binomial system of nomenclature. Before this, plants and animals were grouped into broad generalisations according to such things as their habitat or uses, but this became unwieldy and a universal system was needed.
Living creatures have been divided into two major groups, the Plant Kingdom and the Animal Kingdom. The Plant Kingdom is a hierarchical system, as follows:
    KINGDOM - DIVISION - CLASS - ORDER - FAMILY - GENUS - SPECIES
To illustrate the system, on Gardening Australia we featured the Moraceae (Mulberry) family:
    Kingdom - Plant
Division - Angiosperm (Flowering plants). Division is the broadest way of dividing plants. Flowers, or the sexual reproductive parts of a plant, are the fingerprints of plant classification since they are the most stable, unchanging part of the plant.
Class - Dicotyledon. Division is divided into two classes, 'monocotyledon' or 'dicotyledon'. Cotyledon means 'seed leaf'. Monocotyledons are plants which have veins parallel to the leaf margins and a single leaf after germination (e.g. grasses). Dicotyledons bear two leaves after germination (e.g. peas, tomatoes, roses and a host of others).

This section occupies the central part of the Garden. The plots group species of flora according to the Engler taxonomical system, which is based on affinity. Trees and shrubs, perennial and annual plants, cryptogamic and flowering ones are grown here. Among the cryptogamic species the Royal and Ostrich Ferns capture attention. The most interesting gymnosperms are the following conifers: the Swamp Cypress, Mount Atlas Cedar, Japanese Cedar, Mammoth Tree, and the deciduous Maidenhair Tree. Of the monocotyledonous cryptogamic plants the families Liliaceae, Iridaceae and Amarillidaceae, and beautiful grasses, particularly Arudinaria as well as Zebra, Spear and Pampa Grasses, are worthy of notice. The dicotyledonous cryptogams are represented by species of the families Ranunculaceae, Malvaceae, Papaveraceae, Fabaceae, Rosaceae, Compositae, Labiatae and others. The genus Rhododendron is represented in the native flora by a single species, the Pontic Azalea, which flourishes in abundance at the edge of the pond

Joseph E. Armstrong Plant Taxonomy (BSC 335) and Laboratory in Plant Identification (BSC 336) (D. Knight. 1981. Ordering the world: a history of classifying man . Burnett Books, London. Pp. 16-17.) INTRODUCTION Taxonomy is all at once the oldest, broadest, and most basic of sciences. Taxonomy may be generally defined as the study and classification of variation among organisms, its causes, consequences, and patterns. Data recording patterns of variation are used to construct classifications, logical sets of hierarchical categories, providing both the means of naming and identification, and the generating of hypotheses of relatedness. The need for classification, to organize and make sense out of vast arrays of variation, is absolute, and humans have even been described as the classifying animal (see quotation above). The outcomes of plant taxonomy will be compared and evaluated with respect to different results, uses, usefulness, concepts, and classification controversies. Although treating taxonomy as a contemporary science, this course will provide a background and history of the science of plant taxonomy, its methods and data, and the types of classification, their purposes, and approaches. In other words, the present state of the science of taxonomy will be firmly grounded in a historical context.
