    http://www.colby.edu/info.tech/BI211/Bio211.html
An introduction to the principles and practice of flowering plant taxonomy. Emphasis is placed on acquiring the facility to use appropriate terminology in order to identify plants, as well as understanding the historical context and investigative procedures of taxonomists in designing a classification. Of particular importance is gaining an understanding of the philosophical bases in taxonomy and the relevance of this field to other areas of biology. Course
    Objectives:
    • Learn vegetative and reproductive features and terminology that are useful in the identification of flowering plants. Gain ability to use published keys for the identification of flowering plants. Learn to recognize some of the common and unusual families of flowering plants in Maine. Understand the principles of plant taxonomy, including evolutionary trends, patterns of speciation, biogeography, and floral biology. Gain an understanding of the relationships between evolutionary mechanisms, evolutionary history, and the classification of organisms. Develop an ability to critically examine the extent to which a classification system reflects relationships between organisms.

    3. Plant Taxonomy
plant taxonomy the grouping of plants based on their presumed relationships. However, there is disagreement over some plant groupings and today we have several proposed

    Botany Week 02
    Day 1
Day 2 Day 3 Lab ... Vocabulary Test
    • Demostrate your mastery of scientific nomenclature.
    • Describe how the "Type Method" stabilizes botanical classification.
    • Group plants based on their vascular tissues.
    • Group plants based on their means of reproduction.
    • Describe the characteristics of a tree, shrub, forb, grass, and succulent.
    • Recognize monocots and dicots by sight.
    Plant Identification Assignment. Plant Taxonomy:
the grouping of plants based on their presumed relationships. What information is given by the third part of a scientific name? A plant is a multicellular, eukaryotic, autotrophic organism.
Review the kingdoms of living things. Nomenclature: applying names to plants.
    • Common names are easy to pronounce and remember, but they are confusing because of their local nature.
    • Scientific names are formal names accepted by scientists around the world. In botany, all three components of a scientific name are important:
    • genus name
    • species name
    • authority - individual(s) responsible for the name. Components 1 and 2 are either italicized or underlined. An example: Quercus alba L.

    About NCU-3e
The database has been generated from word processor files used for producing the camera-ready copy of the printed volume of NCU-3. Numerous corrections of detail have already been effected, so that the e-version in some respects represents an update of the printed version. We hope that in the current version (1.0) we have succeeded in eliminating most of the errors introduced in the conversion process. The printed edition of NCU-3 was published in 1993 by Koeltz Scientific Books for the International Association for Plant Taxonomy as vol. 129 of the Regnum Vegetabile series. It contains the foreword by David Hawksworth, and acknowledgements of institutional support and personal contributions. The introduction by Werner Greuter outlines the principles that continue to govern the format of the database edition. The electronic version will be continuously improved, expanded and updated, (a) to correct inconsistencies of format, (b) to rectify errors and omissions in the present entries, (c) to add wanting items and delete inappropriate ones, and (d) to account for post-1990 names not presently included. New versions will be made available at intervals. All interested users are invited to submit their suggestions.

Welcome to CULTIVAR.ORG , your online guide to the nomenclature, cultivar descriptions, classification, and identificaton of garden plants. This site is sponsored by Taxonomic Computer Research and members of the New Ornamentals Society. In 1998 we launched T-LAN , a pilot project in "popular accessible taxonomy" offering online resources about familiar landscape plants. The numerous links together with original identification keys and articles proved an instant hit, gathering tens of thousands of visitors from 65 countries. Students, curators, nurserymen, researchers, architects, and home gardeners around the world now use T-LAN to understand more about plant names, characteristics, genetic resource protection, colors, and unique cultivars. We have decided to expand on T-LAN with its focus on ornamentals to add resources on fruit, vegetable, florist, and turfgrass crops. In the coming months and years we will offer links and original content on the full diversity of garden plants which enrich our lives. Your ideas and suggestions are very welcome. Please write Click on the logos and links below to access each area.

The Index Nominum Genericorum ING ), a collaborative project of the International Association for Plant Taxonomy (IAPT) and the Smithsonian Institution, was initiated in 1954 as a compilation of generic names published for all organisms covered by the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature . We are pleased to offer a way to search the ING database . We hope that those needing access to information about generic names of plants will use the index and will advise us of potential additions and corrections. Ellen Farr and Gea Zijlstra, Editors
    farr.ellen@nmnh.si.edu

    Introduction
The original intent of the ING was to bring all generic names of plants together in a single list to reveal homonymy between groups. In addition, ING includes bibliographic citations and information about the typification and nomenclatural status of generic names. The index was first published on sets of printed cards and then in book form in 1979 (Farr et al., 1979). A supplement was also published (Farr et al., 1986). While a second supplement is planned, we recognize that hard copy is immediately out of date, and for users with access to the Internet we believe that the World Wide Web offers promise as a useful platform for a collaborative project such as this. Current work on the ING is supported by the Smithsonian Institution, IAPT, and the University of Utrecht, Utrecht, The Netherlands. The content of the database was developed over a 40-year period by the efforts of more than 100

We at the Berlin registration secretariat encountered no serious problems as to the technical side of registration. From 01 January 1998 through 30 July 1999, almost 10,000 names of new taxa, new combinations and substitute names have been entered into a database designed for this purpose and been made freely available on the Web. History of Plant Taxonomy
Taxonomy is probably the oldest science and certainly almost from the beginning of human existence plants have been classified based on their edibility, and other uses to humans. Note three cultures all based on different member of grass family: European - wheat, Oriental - rice, American - maize (corn). The development of western plant taxonomy has at least five distinct periods:
    • Preliterate Ancient literate Medieval or dark ages Renaissance Theory of Evolution
    I. Preliterate - since this is pre written record, we have little direct knowledge of this period. However, through the years, all cultures have learned which of the plants around them are useful, whether for medicines, food, clothing, shelter, weapons, etc. We certainly have much archaeological evidence and even information from ancient paintings, drawings or utensils, and even common sense tells us that humans have always known something about the plants around them and their uses. Obviously they knew which were edible and which were poisonous. Also virtually all civilizations have taken advantage of the medicinal properties of plants. In most cultures the medicinal aspects of plants were closely guarded secrets and probably passed on from medicine man to medicine man. In almost all cultures, even today, medicinal information is concentrated in the hands of a few, whether it be witch doctors, medicine men, shamans or even doctors. As you will shortly see, its only in the past few hundred years that plant taxonomy has progressed past classification based on medicinal properties.
