Vegetation Concepts: Digital and Analog. Vegetation Concepts The word " vegetation " is simply a collective noun for the plant life of a particular area. Technically it is not part of Historical Biogeography as I have defined it insofar as the study of vegetation involves the synecological rather than the autecological approach. On the other hand, one can view vegetation as consisting of a loose assemblage of species, each species having its own ecology and history. In order to appreciate this point, we should recognize that there are two fundamentally different approaches to the study of vegetation: (1) the approach that assumes that vegetation can be subdivided into a finite number of types or units; and. (2) the approach that assumes that vegetation consists of a loose assemblage of species whose individual importance varies continually in time and space.
Vegetation "Types"
Alexander von Humboldt Vegetation types have been recognized on a variety of spatial scales. The global pattern of vegetation formations was first formally recognized by Alexander von Humboldt early in the 19th century. Humboldt was a great naturalist, and is sometimes called the father of modern Geography. He travelled widely in the New World tropics and recognized that elevational variation in the physiognomy (i.e., surface form or appearance) of vegetation on tropical mountains broadly paralleled latitudinal variation on the continents. Guidance What to search for?
  • Searches can be made on any spelling of the Latin or Old English plant-names (read the 'Introduction' for the limitations of the data). If a search results in no hits, the researcher should check the 'Variant Spellings' page of the appropriate language, as it may be that a particular spelling has not yet been recorded on the database.
  • Direct associations. If the researcher, after checking the 'Variant Spellings' list, enters the headword in use in this database, s/he will retrieve all the references so far recorded for any recorded spelling of the headword. The results will consist of direct associations, i.e. a word directly associated with the plant-name of the headword.
  • Extended associations. If the researcher enters a non-headword spelling, e.g. brionia (headword: bryonia ), s/he will still retrieve all the recorded references for any recorded spelling of this plant-name, with their associations, but, in this case, the researcher will also retrieve further references which are associations of associations. In other words, the search will retrieve direct associations and extended associations, the latter being words associated with words associated with a bryonia spelling.
