Charlie Johnson is a name synonymous with the cultivation and propagation of plants for the peat garden. He gardens on a 1 acre site in West Yorkshire and welcomes visitors by appointment to his Waincliffe Garden Nursery. (You can obtain details by sending an e-mail to me).
Charlie has kindly agreed to add this piece to complement my work on "The Peat Garden".
There is an aspect of gardening where man can do what nature cannot - that is, to make the best of plant associations. Imagine a Japanese Arisaema growing alongside a British Orchid.....or a North American Erythronium in the company of a Chinese Primula.....and so on.
The Peat Garden lends itself to some stunning fellowships of this kind and in this article, a list of plants ideally suited to botanical matchmaking, are described for your selection. At a time when the majority of ericaceous plants are between flowering and fruiting, these alpines, bulbs and woodlanders will assure you of an all round interest in the Peat Garden.
This list is not exhaustive and, as with the previous article on ericaceous shrubs, the choice belongs to you. The plants listed are those which have given a great deal of pleasure (and continue to do so) to the author. The advice is still the same.....Plan and prepare well to ensure success.

Plant Partners: Creative Plant Associations for Perennials > Customer Review #1: Happy Gardener

I cant believe no one has yet to review this book. I find myself going through the book to look up a particular plant combination and then spending at least an hour paging through the book all over again. Anna Pavords humo(u)rful writing makes for an easy read. This book is a definite MUST HAVE for anyone, beginner, amateur or professional (even if they wouldnt admit to having it on their shelf) who is interested in combining plants. I started using it about a year ago, and the results are fantastic - these combinations work. I especially like the attention to normally overlooked plants such as euphorbias, violets, and columbines and I am dying to try some of the more exotic combinations. The featured plant trios each contain a "star" plant and two companions. Each of the stars are also listed in the back with alternative partners. The book is organized with gradations from spring-summer-fall and includes bulbs as well as perennials and a few annuals. Missing are shrubs, roses, and climbers, but we cant have everything in one book, can we?

Marsh Plant Associations of South San Francisco Bay
As part of a monitoring program required by the San Francisco Bay Regional Water Quality Control Board, the City of San Jose commissions a yearly study of the marshes potentially affected by the freshwater discharge from the Water Pollution Control Plant. These studies document changes in the distribution and aerial extent of salt, brackish and freshwater marsh. RESEARCH PROJECT Larval case architecture and implications of host-plant associations for North American Coleophora (Lepidoptera; Coleophoridae
and John W. Wenzel
Museum of Biodiversity, The Ohio State University The case-bearing moths of North America are represented by a single genus, Coleophora, which contains approximately 144 described species. All are external seed or leaf miners that inhabit portable silk cases during most of the larval stage. Architectural and ecological characters from larval cases were used in cladistic analysis to investigate existing case-groups for 32 North American species of Coleophora. Cladistic analysis confirmed monophyly of certain case groups, but not of others. Host plant preferences were also examined. The pattern of host plant use reflects more closely preference for certain plant tissues (seeds versus leaves) and growth forms (herbaceous versus woody) with exploitation of different plant taxa, rather than preference for certain plant taxa with exploitation of different plant tissues. http://swamp.ag.ohio-state.edu/current research.html

Description:
Abstract:
Primary Plant Association refers to the potential natural vegetation a site, or climax vegetation.
Purpose: Provide appropriate scale data to meet park management needs.
Plant Associations are based on the USFS photo-interpreted delineation of ecological units from CIR 1:63,360 photos with final adjustments made based on field work and 1:6,000 black and white photography. Mapping was drawn on 1:25,000 USGS topographic quadrangle overlays and digitizing by USFS. The vegetation types were classified based on previous work on plant associations in the Chatham Area portions of Admiralty, Baranof, and Chichagof (ABC) Islands. In some cases, the KLGO communities are somewhat different in both vegetation composition and structure from that average, probably due to the location of KLGO at the northern end of the Tongass. These community descriptions were provided specifically for KLGO but may become part of the future Chatham Area plan community descriptions.

EVOLUTION OF LARVAL HABITS AND HOST-PLANT ASSOCIATIONS
IN NEMATINE SAWFLIES (HYMENOPTERA: TENTHREDINIDAE)

Tommi Nyman
email: Tommi.Nyman@joensuu.fi M ost insects feed on only one or a few plant species, but it is known that the host-plant associations of any insect species may change during evolutionary time scales. One of the “big questions” in evolutionary biology is what determines the speed and direction of these host shifts. We use the sawflies that belong to the tenthredinid subfamily Nematinae as a model group for studying the ongoing coevolution between herbivorous insects and plants. The Nematinae is a taxonomically and ecologically diverse sawfly group that is widely distributed over the Holarctic region. This apparently monophyletic group includes over a thousand species that can be divided into ca. 40 genera in eight tribes. The larvae of the nematines feed on various deciduous trees, conifers, herbs, or grasses. Some of the most abundant nematines are serious pests of orchard and forest trees. Most nematine species have free-living larvae that feed externally on leaves, but some species have larvae that feed inside plant tissues. These endophytous larvae may mine inside leaves, petioles, catkins, or berries. In some species, the larvae live inside galls or leaf rolls.
