Joshua Kaplowitz email article respond to article print article I what F I parked the car and bounded into the main office to say hi to Mr. Bledsoe, the interim principal who had hired me a few weeks before. As he showed me around the clean but bare halls, my head filled with visions of my students happily painting imaginative murals under my artistic direction. I peered through windows into classrooms, where students were bent over their desks, quietly filling out worksheets. I smiled to myself as I imagined the creative lessons I would give to these children, who had never had a dynamic young teacher to get them excited about scholarship the way I knew I could. Their minds were like kindling, I reflected; all they needed was a spark to ignite a love of learning that would lift them above the drugs, violence, and poverty. The spark, I hoped, would be me. Fine. But as I learned to my great cost, that was easier said than done.

http://www.caryacademy.org/historytech/Vol1no1/virtualfieldtripspage1.htm
Planning a virtual field trip by Michael Turturice printable page (requires Acrobat Reader Objectives: The primary objectives of this activity are to tap into the riches of the Internet in order to provide students with field-trip type experiences. Materials used: Primary sources are the stuff of history. The letters from a president, the treasures of a pyramid, the first-hand account of a great battle, a pottery shard. From this stuff come secondary sources such as textbooks, encyclopedias, and CD ROMs. Valuable as secondary source are, they teach through dilution, with someone other than the student deciding what is salient and what is not. Primary sources, by contrast, force students to make inferences, hypothesize about motives, and make comparisons between civilizations and individuals. Unfortunately, the realities of teacher training, students' past classroom experiences, and cost have meant that primary sources have been under-utilized.
The wonders of the Internet and of multimedia software may change all that. The Internet and multimedia software provide teachers and students with an exciting vehicle to access a wide variety of both secondary sources and primary sources that would otherwise be unavailable to them. With these electronic resources, teachers may now take their students on what might be called virtual field trips, excursions that allow teachers to create a more student-directed approach to learning which stands in contrast with the traditional, teacher-directed approach of many social studies classes.

School starts in a few weeks and I have begun lesson planning for my classroom. But input from others would be really great. The scenario: I teach basic mathematics to 9-12 graders in a high school mainstream program. The objective is to teach students basic computational skills. The primary objective is to get them to pass the high school graduation requirement test, which presents real life mathematical problem solving via word problems. My students really struggle with reading as it is, and to read to determine the computation process needed to find the answer is more difficult. I have taught this class last year with some success but ideas are welcomed. (A few kids passed this test.) Also, I will be teaching Educational and Career Planning. This course I have never taught and have a minimal amount of teaching materials to use.

A Successful Field Trip is Just Four "P's" Away

The letter came early one fall: "Local Home-School field trip to DAC in two weeks." I read the letter and furrowed my brows. What's a DAC? I wondered, pausing to shrug before filing the letter to read "later." l then proceeded with a busy day of teaching my second grader.
Two weeks slid by and before I knew it, the field trip was upon me. My son and I awoke, drove to the designated destination and exited our vehicle.
"What' s a DAC?" I whispered to another mother as we entered the building.

Not all people with Qualified Teacher Status go into teaching jobs. Rob Porter recalls his decision to leave teaching as soon as he qualified. To teach or not to teach Teaching is a career that anyone who wants to put something back into society should seriously consider. There are few jobs that are more rewarding, but like any caring profession, teaching has many drawbacks. So if you're thinking about becoming a teacher, it is important that you think carefully about the type of career that you want and then decide if teaching is really right for you. The most common mistake is that people think teaching, especially in primary schools, is a cushy 9-3 job with long holidays and little pressure. But this couldn't be further from the truth. Most teachers are in by 8am and don't leave before 5pm, which is a longer working day than most office jobs and this only scratches the surface of what every teacher has to do.

    Highlights
"Behind The Scenes" When to Hold Youth-Led Worship Involve Young People Central to the life of God's people is worship. This is, or should be, true of God's young people too. An important aspect of youth ministry is helping young people appreciate and participate in worship, as well as equipping them to help lead worship. Young people's presence in worship should be consistent, not sporadic. Many congregations involve youth in worship on a weekly basis. Some congregations plan annual or more frequent youth-led worship services. Some congregations do both.
    "Behind The Scenes"
Part of helping young people appreciate worship is "behind the scenes" work. It means teaching about worship, and involving youth in the planning. Here are some teaching ideas:
  • Start early. Before they become too loose with the word "boring," try to instill in them an appreciation for worship. In a Sunday or after-school setting, teach a four-session class on why and how we worship. A good resource for elementary youth is My Worship Book by Logos Art Productions, Inc. (1.800.328.0200). Work-site schools teach a lesson to developers
High school at Northgate Mall offers a new venue for at-risk students By ERIC MONTAGUE
    Washington Policy Center
Photo courtesy of Washington Policy Center The Seattle Mall Academy, inside Northgate Mall, is one of about 45 work-site schools in the country. As the cost of educating our children continues to rise and the quality of our school system faces increased scrutiny, it is a good time to step back and analyze how the school environment affects our children’s learning. Kids are influenced by the attitude of their teachers, the quality of the school and the educational opportunities they are provided. Evidence of the difficulty Seattle Public Schools has in meeting the needs of its students is shown by the high private school enrollment within the district. In Seattle, more than 30 percent of all students choose private schools over the “free” public education system. Montague In an effort to improve the quality of the entire educational experience, school districts throughout the country are establishing innovative work-site schools through public-private partnerships. These partnerships reduce class sizes, increase parental involvement and save money by avoiding the expense of building new schools or renovating old ones. What are work-site schools?

Healthy Living Tips AUGUST 1998 Striking a Balance in the Lunch Box: How to Pack a Nutritious Lunch Your Kids Will Like Whether the school's registered dietitian plans lunches for your children or you pack lunch boxes at home, it is important to balance nutrition with good taste. Parents want kids to learn healthy eating patterns early in life and to eat appropriate amounts of a variety of nutritious foods from the Food Guide Pyramid. Kids, on the other hand, just want foods that taste good. In planning lunches that will satisfy both parents and kids, the key is to find good-tasting foods that are nutritious and fun for kids to eat, and help kids meet the practical guide lines set by the Pyramid. Here are some suggestions: Snack-wiches. Think snack-sizes with everything you pack in the lunch boxincluding sandwiches: Create great sandwich stand-ins with mini-bagels. They can be topped with peanut butter and jelly or lean lunch meat roll-ups like turkey breast or ham. Stuff a pita pocket with sliced lean roast beef, sliced cheese, tomato, a squirt of mustard, and sprouts.
