42. Why Do Stars Twinkle While Planets Do Not?
Updated March 1992 by SIC; Original by John Blanton. Why Do Stars Twinkle Whileplanets Do Not? The result is that stars tend to twinkle, and planets do not.
http://math.ucr.edu/home/baez/physics/General/twinkle.html
[Physics FAQ] Updated March 1992 by SIC;
Original by John Blanton.
Why Do Stars Twinkle While Planets Do Not?
Stars, except for the Sun, although they may be millions of miles in diameter, are very far away. They appear as point sources even when viewed by telescopes. The planets in our solar system, much smaller than stars, are closer and can be resolved as disks with a little bit of magnification (field binoculars, for example). Since the Earth's atmosphere is turbulent, all images viewed up through it tend to "swim." The result of this is that sometimes a single point in object space gets mapped to two or more points in image space, and also sometimes a single point in object space does not get mapped into any point in image space. When a star's single point in object space fails to map to at least one point in image space, the star seems to disappear temporarily. This does not mean the star's light is lost for that moment. It just means that it didn't get to your eye, it went somewhere else. Since planets represent several points in object space, it is highly likely that one or more points in the planet's object space get mapped to a points in image space, and the planet's image never winks out. Each individual ray is twinkling away as badly as any star, but when all of those individual rays are viewed together, the next effect is averaged out to something considerably steadier.

The Nine Planets
A Multimedia Tour of the Solar System
by Bill Arnett
The Nine Planets is an overview of the history, mythology, and current scientific knowledge of each of the planets and moons in our solar system. Each page has text and images, some have sounds and movies, most provide references to additional related information. All of the planets can be seen with a small telescope; most can be seen with binoculars. And large telescopes continue to provide much useful information. But the possibility of getting up close with interplanetary spacecraft has revolutionized planetary science. Very little of this site would have been possible without the space program. Nevertheless, there's a lot that you can see with very modest equipment or even with just your own eyes. Past generations of people found beauty and a sense of wonder contemplating the night sky. Today's scientific knowledge further enhances and deepens that experience. And you can share in it by simply going out in the evening and looking up Contents Hardcopy The New Solar System

These images were taken with the Hubble Space Telescope from the year 1996 (bottom left) to 2000 (top right). Notice how thin the rings are! They are 300,000 km across, and only a kilometer thick at most. They are made up of chunks of ice, most of which are about the size of softballs, though there are larger bodies, some a few kilometers across, and smaller pieces, all the way down to very fine dust. Each ring particle orbits Saturn like a tiny moon.

Book Review: We Want to Live by Aajonus Vonderplanitz
"From the Planets"
Michael Schachter, M.D., an old friend who treats many cancer patients, returned from the September meeting of The Cancer Control Society in Pasadena all fired up: he had heard a presentation by one Aajonus Vonderplanitz on the latter's new book, "We Want to Live."* Mike had also seen the blood work on a multiple myeloma patient who had failed to respond to all other conventional and unconventional treatments. The man went to Mr. Vonderplanitz and in a very short time most of his blood parameters had completely normalized. Shortly thereafter, Mike spoke at the panel that Mary Ann Richardson, Ph.D. and I organized at the Third International Congress of Alternative and Complementary Medicine in Arlington, VA. There, he made his enthusiasm for what Mr. Vonderplanitz was doing public. And so I ordered and read this book. It annoyed, fascinated and challenged me. I was very skeptical. There is the question of authority. I am certainly not hung up on academic credentials, and know that some very excellent discoveries can come out of left field. But essentially Aajonus has little on his resume that reassures us that he knows what he's talking about. He is a self-appointed "nutritionist," who tells us that he was featured in Disney's Epcot Magazine and has "fostered nutriton on several talk TV and radio shows and children's programs." Fine, but hardly promising for an expert on cancer therapy.

The planets orbiting nearer the sun than the earth are termed inferior planets; those whose orbits are larger are called superior planets. The unit for measuring distance in the solar system is the astronomical unit (AU), the average distance between the earth and the sun. The mean distances of the planets from the sun range from 0.39 AU for Mercury to 39 AU for Pluto. Many astronomers maintain that Pluto is not a planet at all. It is unlike the terrestrial planets : Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars : which are rocky, and it is unlike the gas giants : Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. Its orbit, which is tilted from the plane in which the other eight planets travel about the Sun, its size, and its composition more closely resemble that of a comet residing in the Kuiper belt than a planet in the solar system. See the table entitled Major Planets of the Solar System
Planetary Motion
The motion of the planets was first described accurately by Johannes Kepler at the beginning of the 17th cent.; he showed that the planets move in nearly circular elliptical orbits. Isaac Newton later showed that the laws of planetary motion discovered by Kepler apply also to all other bodies in the solar system and are based on the force of

Having planets is where you can seriously gain a strategic edge over other players. By owning planets you can control interstellar trade and manipulate what happens in the galaxy.
    Conquering
Conquering a planet can be a difficult task if the planet has good defenses. There are a couple items that can aid you when attempting a takeover: Zone Atomic Bombs used when attacking a planet. Will destroy fighters on the planet. Will destroy a Utopia Planetary Defense? Onboard Printing Kits used when attacking a planet. Allows you to use the power of persuasion to make the people on the planet rise up and destroy fighter drones on their planet. Before attempting an attack you want to ensure that the number of fighters you have exceeds the number on the planet, you will also want to have in your possession at least one of the above items. Making such a maneuver shouldn't be taken lightly, having your ship destroyed by a Utopia Defense System can set you back greatly.

    FRIDAY
    11th June 2004
    Text Only

Are we looking for life on other planets? In short, the answer to this question is 'yes'. Serious, scientific attempts to find extraterrestrial life and to make contact with it have been underway for many years: The cratered, apparently lifeless surface of Mars was first revealed in the 1960s during NASA's Mariner space research programme. Since then, samples of Martian soil have been analysed by Viking Lander modules that touched down on the planet's surface. The most promising site was chosen - terrain that looked liked dried-up riverbeds. Each Lander module performed a number of experiments on soil scooped up from the Martian surface. One of these added a special radioactively labelled sugar solution to the soil - any microbes present would use this for energy as they carried out respiration. The Lander was able to detect carbon dioxide gas - a sign that respiration was happening, and therefore a sign of primitive life! Quickly, the gas stopped being generated - no more than an ordinary (lifeless) chemical reaction had occurred. In many ways, this did not really surprise the scientists, as no liquid water has been found on the planet - a vital ingredient for all known life forms. In addition, the Martian atmosphere is unable to absorb any of the dangerous ultraviolet (UV) light it has, since it has no ozone. All life on the planet's surface would be killed on contact with the UV light!

Ta Task Process Resources Evaluation ... Teacher Notes Introduction: You have been selected to design a vacation package to a planet. Working in groups, you will create a company consisting of a rocket specialist, spacesuit designer, and travel agent. Task: Your company's goals include the following:
    • Research the planet, identify the challenges it presents to living things, and create solutions to overcome the challenges. Produce a vacation package highlighting the special features of the planet. Invent a spacesuit that meets the basic requirements for living things and is capable of enduring the trip. Generate a travel brochure advertising the vacation in detail. Design a rocket that has the ability to support life and special features that would enable it to complete the vacation.
