The following compilation of Internet/WWW sites is intended to be an introductory guide to some of the map and reference resources available via the World Wide Web. Consider using one of the WWW search engines if you are looking for a specific type of map or reference. The maps which are listed here have been selected because they are thought to be reasonably useful and/or interesting. They are categorized by geographical region although there are a couple of thematic categories such as Interactive Maps which both highlights the potential of the WWW and are also fun to use. Note that there is some overlap in geographic coverage between these categories. The emphasis is on displayable maps (e.g. images) rather than digital cartographic (GIS) and satellite data which can be found in the separate compilation Geodata Information Sources . There is also another listing which includes Weather Maps and Imagery

    Regions of the United States
I'm frequently asked about which region a state lies within, for instance, "Is Kansas a Midwestern state or a Central state?" Unfortunately, the U.S.A. is composed of many "regions" and there is no official designation for each state. You can place Kansas as a Midwestern state and just as easily call it a Central state, just as you could call Oregon a Pacific state and a Northwestern state (although the term Pacific Northwest is frequently also used.) Below is a map that provides an indication of the diveristy of regional terms used in the United States. This map provides just a small sample of the terms used. There are no boundaries on this map because these regions are of course relative and represent different things to different people. New Zealand is considered to be the most isolated country in the world in a geographical sense. New Zealand is on the opposite side of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) which makes New Zealand the first country in the world to see each new day. This means the country is 12 hours ahead of England, and 24 hours ahead of some of the nearby Pacific Islands due to the International Date being nearby. If you were able to travel from New Zealand through the centre of the earth, and continued to the otherside, you would find yourself in and area between North Africa and Southern England. Click on New Zealand in the map to zoom in, or choose a link to your left.

March 2001 (rev.) PURPOSE: When you talk about the "vast open ranges," where are you talking about? When you see a cactus growing in Louisiana, does a puzzled look come upon your face? When you share pictures of red brick structures with a friend, do they have a clue as to where you were on vacation? With all of the advances being made in this world, we can bring ourselves closer to places we never even dreamed of. But do we really know where these places are? Is the mention of "New York," just a word or is it a place in your mind that you can see? Before taking a trip, people research an area or place to know what to pack or to know where they may want to visit. The purpose is for students to have a visual image in their minds about different places and to have enough knowledge about these places or regions to build their experiences. So many times, students research on places or know about places or heard about places that they have never seen and I would like the students to understand where people are talking about, on a mental map and through physical features or man-made features. FOCUS QUESTIONS:
  • What are the physical and man-made features of a region?

    Visited Countries
Visited Countries is a small project demonstrating the power of manipulating the palette of a gif image on the fly. Here we start with a map of the world with each country in a different color. The script asks which country you have been to and sets the colors of those countries to red, the rest to green. new: by popular demand I created Visited States , which does exactly the same, except for that it shows a map with the states of the US you've been to in red. You can copy the image and put it on your homepage or on your blog if you think that's cool. It is like an affiliate program, where I get paid by the Google ads. Or you can check out where your fellow travellers have been If you crawl through the comments below, you see a lot of discussion of which states are included and which are not. My basic rule is that a nation has to be internationally recognized, i.e. by the UN. This has the unfortunate effect that Tahiti and French Guyana become part of France and the map looks silly if you click France and see something in South America. Here I have taken the practical approach to only seperate countries and dependent territories if the dependent territories are big enough to really show up on the map, i.e. Greenland and French Guyana. new: If you like this

A New Mapping of the World for the New Millennium
    P.J. Taylor, M. Hoyler, D.R.F. Walker and M.J. Szegner
Abstract A new mapping of the world derived from connections between cities is presented as a complement to the traditional world map of countries. Under conditions of contemporary globalization world cities have emerged as global service centres. These have been created by the location strategies of leading corporate service firms (e.g. in accountancy) in setting up their global office networks. Data on the offices of 46 global service firms in 55 world cities are used to define service connections between cities. Connections are converted into measures of network proximity and a multidimensional scaling is applied to these ‘distances’ to create a ‘global service space’ of cities. This new mapping of the world shows a distinctive centric structure with the major world cities (e.g. London) at the core. Investigation of this general structure reveals more subtle patterns of interacting regional and hierarchical tendencies. Keywords: World map, world cities, globalization, advanced producer services, multidimensional scaling

    Time offered:
    Summer Session 1, M-F, 8:40-11:40 A.M.
    Class Resources:
    Course Description:

The primary objective of this course is to familiarize you with the diversity of people and places in the world. In addition, you will learn the locations of some basic places and features so that you will have a better understanding of world events and how they are interrelated. As a holistic discipline, geography is concerned with the distributions of all sorts of phenomena, both human and physical, and with the interactions between and among those phenomena. The most significant phenomena that this course studies is the culture region, which is defined in almost as many ways as there are geographers. Virtually all the definitions, however, center upon the differences in how people live and interact with one another in place, and how these different styles of living impact the landscape.
While such knowledge of the world is important in and of itself, it also has a more practical use. As telecommunications advances have accelerated this century, our planet is becoming more connected and interrelated than ever before. In the near future, knowing the customs of Chinese society, for example, could be an important job skill that you might need when your company sends you to manage its new office in Beijing. Similarly, another devastating earthquake in Japan could affect your life in numerous ways, including your job, the interest rate you get for a loan, or the next technological improvement for your home computer. Understanding these linkages and anticipating their outcomes will make you a more competitive member of the global workforce and community.
