Tunis is the capital. The Atlas Mountains in the north form a dry plateau that merges with fertile plains near the coast; in the south, below the Chott Djerid and other salt lakes, stretches the Sahara desert. The irregular coastline has several fine harbors. Agriculture, mining, energy, tourism, and manufacturing are all important to the economy. Wheat, barley, grapes, olives, sugar beets, citrus fruits, and dates are the leading crops, and petroleum and phosphates are the principal minerals. Manufactured goods include textiles, steel, and processed food. The population is largely Berber and Arab, and Islam is the dominant religion. Arabic is the official language, although French is widely spoken. History

Guinea
Introduction [Top of Page] Background: Independent from France since 1958, Guinea did not hold democratic elections until 1993 when Gen. Lansana CONTE (head of the military government) was elected president in disputed balloting. Security clampdowns continue, although not as severe as in earlier decades. Reelected in 1998, the president faced growing criticism in 1999 for his jailing of a major opposition leader and widespread economic malaise. Unrest in Sierra Leone also continued to threaten Guinea's stability. Geography [Top of Page] Location: Western Africa, bordering the North Atlantic Ocean, between Guinea-Bissau and Sierra Leone

Appreciating our Volunteers Please take the time to write a thank you note. Sask Gen Web is a team of volunteers working together to provide information about Saskatchewan and its regions, the local historical, geographical and genealogical resources. Resources that provide names, dates and places are made available through online databases or information is provided on how to locate these resources. As e-mail makes the world a much smaller place, the long distance researcher can benefit greatly by finding out about family that was once much further away, and is now as close as the internet. The regional, volunteers as well as the look up volunteer, the contact, local resident or transcriber volunteer all come together as the Sask Gen Web team to provide a valuable service to the WWW community. Please help them to all feel appreciated.

      1 The phenomenon of earthquakes
All of us are aware of the human disasters which are sometimes caused by earthquakes. In the course of history, some of these have been of immense proportions, but the hazard is a continuous one in many parts of the world, and the few examples which follow will suffice to illustrate the magnitude of the problem: The rational response to any danger is to study the natural phenomenon which gives rise to it. In the case of earthquakes, the study has proceeded outwards from the centres of the most disastrous events. Thus the earliest scientific studies were confined to the observation of gross (macroseismic) effects in the region surrounding the so-called "epicentre", which is defined as the point on the surface of the ground at which the effects of the earthquake were most intense. At a later stage of development, it was found that earthquake waves could be detected instrumentally at great distances from the epicentre, and it was realised that the true source, or "focus" was often at a very considerable depth within the earth. (Fig. 1)
