In "Gazetteers: Identifying Research Localities," Ancestry 12 (4) (July/August 1994), David Thackery notes the following: "Genealogy is, among other things, an exercise in geography. Successful research often hinges on identifying the locality in which one's ancestors lived. Once we know the locality, we are in a position to consult the records and histories for the area in an effort to piece together the lives of our forebears." Pinpointing modern place-names can begin with Frank R. Abate, ed., Omni Gazetteer of the United State of America , 11 vols. (Detroit: Omnigraphics, 1991). The work is subtitled "Providing Name, Location, and Identification for Nearly 1,500,000 Populated Places and Geographic Features in the Fifty States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and U.S. Territories." Modern towns can also be sought in Bullinger's Postal and Shipper's Guide to the United States and Canada (Westwood, N.J.: Bullinger's, 1982) or

Basics on Australian placenames, gazetteers, maps etc
Atlases, gazetteers and maps are important for family research. They help identify places and show associations with other places. Historical atlases and maps may reveal that places no longer linked by made roads were once linked by a coach route. Other places owed their existence to the establishment of the overland telegraph. The coming of the railway may have led to the decline of once important towns and the expansion of a hamlet nearby e.g. NSW's Berrima and Mittagong.
Some places have changed their names - e.g. in NSW, Germanton changed to Holbrook during World War I. Don't be misled by parish names - localities may bear no relation to similarly named parishes. For example, the parish of Castlereagh NSW is not in the district of Castlereagh; Bathurst parish is not in the District of Bathurst; and the Colo River does not flow near the Parish of South Colah, often mis-spelt Colo. Locality names can also move, as indicated by these NSW examples: Pennant Hills Wharf is at Ermington, and Michael Connor's farm at Hunters Hill is actually at Thornleigh.
In these various cases, or if a place name is illegible, mis-spelt or unknown to you, reference to the following sources should help.

    Gazetteers
Topographical Dictionaries of England, Ireland, and Scotland Originally prepared by Samuel Lewis, the gazetteers reproduced on this Family Archive contain detailed information on English, Irish, and Scottish locales as they existed in the mid-1800s. A gazetteer is a topographical (or geographical) dictionary in which a location's political and physical features are defined. For example, for a location listed you may learn information on local industry, nearby towns, population, and primary landholders.
    Gazetteer of England and Wales
This database contains The Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales, which provides a complete description of these countries and an alphabetical dictionary of their counties, dioceses, parishes, boroughs, etc. Gazetteers are very useful sources for genealogists because they help us locate and learn about the places our ancestor's lived.
    England Topographical Dictionary
This well-known dictionary contains over 30,000 historical and statistical descriptions of the counties, cities, townships, and parishes of England as well as the Islands of Guernsey, Jersey and Man. The description includes the name of the place, its location, the number of inhabitants, and when available, any interesting facts such as landmark descriptions, industries, prominent individuals, schools, churches, and local activities.
    Ordnance Gazetteer of Scotland
This database contains the six volume series, the Ordnance Gazetteer of Scotland. It is a geographical dictionary providing statistical, biographical, and historical information on Scotland's topography, as well as a general survey of Scotland as a whole. Gazetteers like this one are very useful sources for genealogists because they help us locate and learn about the places our ancestor's lived.

    Geographical Sources
One of the useful novelties the Web offers is access to geographical information. Atlases and gazeteers have traditionally been part of "Ready Reference". Now the Web makes getting custom maps drawn for the places you want a snap. Several "Portals" offer map services. I give you links to these 9 portals first. Then I'll show you some online versions of Atlases and Gazeteers. Altavista's map service Excite's map service Infoseek's map service HotBot doesn't offer a map service up front. Choose , and then choose . Note that HotBot are almost identical (and slow). LookSmart doesn't offer a map service up front, but if you choose its you will see a section. Lycos offers Road Maps Snap! doesn't have a map service on it's front page, but if you go to TRAVEL, you will see it's MAP page, with categories of major regions. WebCrawler offers Maps right up front. Yahoo's map service Gazetteers: Of course you can go to a search engine and search for "gazetteer". This will lead you to many particular gazetteers, e.g., for a state or for a city. Some of the more comprehensive links I list below. (Gazetteers as used by genealogists are not included here.) Expedia , from Microsoft. I tested this with a little city I used to live in in Brazil (Crato, Ceara) and it pulled up a localized map pronto. Expedia also lets you save the maps you frequently refer to.

Online histories of maps Most literature on the subject, and certainly the authoritative sources, remains only in printed form, see Reading Suggestions . Despite the millions of Web pages now available, you will still find relatively little information about early maps on the Web. Much of what is offered is superficial, random or unreliable. This site is therefore highly selective in the links it provides. That said, there is a fast-growing body of online literature - see Web articles and commentaries on specific topics in the History of Cartography The fullest overview of the subject, especially as it relates to printed maps available to collectors, is to be found in the Web version of Carl Moreland and David Bannister's Antique Maps . This is described as a 300-page online book. For a summary of the subject, see Chapter 1
