  • "Geography is the science of space and place..." The University of Delaware Department of Geography begins its web site (URL above) with a succinct paragraph, which defines scope, goals, and methods of the subject of Geography. That geographers determine what is meant by Geography is seen in this statement from the Association of American Geographers, the National Council for Geographic Education, the National Geographic Society, and the American Geographical Society. Atlases and Gazetteers
Back to Using Reference Materials If your research has a geographical angle, maps and atlases may come into play. In addition to atlases of countries, regions, and the world, there are atlases that cover history, natural resources, ethnic groups, and many other special topics. Gazetteers list place names and give basic information about them, including their location. The Columbia Lippincott Gazetteer of the World is one published gazetteer of note. The Geographic Name Server on the Internet ( http://www.census.gov/cgi-bin/gazetteer ) gives the precise latitude and longitude of places that you can search for by name.

Ontario, with its preponderance of place names with connections to the British Isles, differs markedly in place-name characteristics from Canada's other regions, especially those that have been historically imprinted with the French language and culture. In this, the first wide-ranging survey of Ontario's place names, Alan Rayburn has reviewed 2285, including those of all 815 municipalities, as well as of unincorporated places with populations exceeding 75 and of a large selection of the more prominent lakes, rivers, islands, points, hills, mountains, and highways. Rayburn sets the record straight on the origin of many names, including that of Toronto, which does not mean 'place of meeting,' but refers to the Mohawk description of fish weirs in The Narrows between Lake Simcoe and Lake Couchiching. He points out that Kitchener would still be Berlin but for the First World War, and Fort William and Port Arthur might have become Lakehead in 1970 if the ballot had not been rigged in favour of Thunder Bay. Diplomatically he reveals the correct origin of Bastard Township. Rayburn also deals with an impressive array of names of aboriginal origin, including Niagara, Muskoka, Penetanguishene, Temagami, Nipigon, Oshawa, and Wawa.

There are maps and atlases of every description: from street maps of present day Vancouver to historical atlases of ancient Rome; from bathymetric maps of the ocean floor to geological maps of Jupiter's moons. Most of the material is held in the Map Area which is situated between the elevators and the Genealogy section. Very old or rare maps, especially of the Pacific Northwest, may be found in Special Collections, on Level Seven. A great many atlases are in the History Division, but other subject divisions such as Science and Technology also have atlas collections. Promoting Geographic Knowledge Through Literature Workshop
July 7-19, 2002 Background: Students should have a basic understanding of the five themes of geography and their importance in answering the questions; Where is it? Why is it there? What are the consequences of it being there? Previous lessons include map skills and a study of landforms and bodies of water. Motivation: Alice McLerran’s story, Roxaboxen, is about a group of children who use the resources of the desert and a few boxes to transform a desert area into a community that includes a town hall, jail, cemetery, houses and shops. Through discussion of the story, and student study of natural resources and people’s wants and needs, students will design a classroom community of their own. Connection to the Curriculum: Subject areas integrated in this activity are social studies, language arts and art. Teaching Level: Grade 3 Time Frame: 3-4 class periods Geography Themes: Location, Place, Human Environment Interaction, and Movement

Naperville IL 60540 Promoting Geographic Knowledge Through Literature Workshop
July 7-19, 2002
Motivation/Background
The book The Bunyans, by Audrey Wood uses the tall tale adventures of the Bunyan family to explain the landforms and natural wonders of North America. The Geography theme of Place is illustrated through pictures and descriptions of the physical characteristics of places in North America such as Mammoth Cave, Niagara Falls, and the Continental Divide. The Bunyans will be read aloud to the students, and they will build on this model by creating a class Geographical Dictionary of Landforms and Bodies of Water.
Connection with the Curriculum:
Subject areas integrated in the activity are social studies, language arts, and art. Teaching Level : Grades 3 and 4 Time Frame: 1-2 class periods Objectives:
  • Students will be able to describe the physical characteristics of a particular landform or body of water. Students will construct a page for a class book by researching an assigned landform or body of water, drawing the feature, and including a definition of the feature on the page that illustrates and describes its physical characteristics.
