WELCOME TO PITCAIRN ISLAND Welcome to Pitcairn Island, home of the descendents of several of the mutineers from the British ship HMS Bounty. Pitcairn Island, which is located in the South Pacific about 2170 km from Tahiti, is one of the most isolated places on earth. It is also one of the most fascinating, due to its heritage as home to the children of mutineers who settled on the island to avoid capture. The Pitcairn Island Mystique The Early Settlement of Pitcairn Island On April 28, 1789, Fletcher Christian, Master's Mate of the British ship HMS Bounty, led a revolt against the Bounty's acting captain, Lieutenant William Bligh. The Bounty was returning from a mission to collect breadfruit plants from Tahiti, for use as a potential food source on New World plantations. Various reasons for the mutiny have been cited and discussed, among them the legendary tyranny of "Captain" Bligh, and the desire of some crew members to return to Tahiti. For some of the crew, particularly the able seamen, Tahiti seemed a paradise, where the men were treated like nobility in the midst of plenty. Other factors include the cramped conditions on the Bounty once the breadfruit plants were stowed, and the absence of Royal Marines to guard the arms chest and quell any rebellions. During the mutiny, Bligh and 18 other crew members were set adrift in an open boat, with one week's provisions and a few simple navigation instruments. Remarkably, Bligh sailed the small, crowded boat through 3,500 miles of open sea to the Dutch colony of Timor in the East Indies. Twelve of the original 19 men that the mutineers cast adrift survived the ordeal and ultimately arrived safely in England.

INSIDE THE PITCAIRN ISLAND FAMILY, 1928-1938 There are thousands of articles, books, and some movies about how mutineers, led by Masters' Mate Fletcher Christian, seized HMS Bounty and then isolated themselves on the remote Pitcairn Island, that tiny speck in the South Pacific, to avoid captured and death by the Royal Navy. However, too few of these historic accounts tell how their descendents lived as a lonely, close knit, religious community during the 1920 and 1930 period. Now the Seller offers on EBAY a print-on-demand, 276 page monograph entitled Inside the Pitcairn Family, 1928-1938, that presents a fascinating ensemble of 41 letters written by Richard B. Fairclough and Agnes and Harriet Ross, who were residents on Pitcairn Island during this period. (This monograph is an economically available historical document, which is neatly presented (not intended for use as an elegant coffee table item). It is was edited, and is now being published, by Captain Julius Grigore, Jr., USN, Retired, who is a Founding Member of the Panama Historical Society. It is presented on an 8.5 x 11-inch format, with a comb binding.) Henderson Island - Latitude 24.22 S - Longitude 128.19 W Henderson Island's Geography The Pacific Islands Pilot describes Henderson island as "bounded by perpendicular cliffs of dead coral, about 15m (50 ft.) high, considerably undermined by the sea. They rise to a flat surface about 30m (100m) high. Trees and dense undergrowth cover the surface, except near South Point, the S extremity." The South Pacific Handbook describes: " The interior of the island is a flat coral plateau about 30 m high but the dense undergrowth, prickly vines, and sharp coral rock make it almost impenetrable." Henderson is an elevated coralline limestone ("makatea") island which rises as an isolated conical mound from a depth of about 3.5km. The surface of the island is coral reef-rubble interspersed with areas of dissected limestone, surrounded by steep limestone cliffs undercut on all sides except to the north. There are three main beaches, to the north, north-west and north-east. Tidal range at spring tides is probably about 1m, and tides are semi diurnal. The central depression is considered to be an uplifted lagoon. Freshwater is almost completely absent, only occurring as drippings in caves, and as a spring below high tide level in the north (flow and permanence unknown).
