Pitcairn Islands The Pitcairn Islands are not on any international air routes and getting there is strictly for the determined, but that can be precisely the attraction in a world increasingly at our fingertips. Once there, check out ancient Polynesian rock carvings and the Bounty Bible. Facilities are limited, but you can drop in on your own yacht or from a passing cruiser and spend a day walking, talking to locals, swimming in St Paul's Pool, eating and checking out the points of interest, like John Catch a Cow and Bitey Bitey (the local language is an attraction in itself). An unholy alliance of renegades from British justice and South Sea islanders from nearby Tahiti settled Pitcairn in 1790, but their ideal of founding a new community quickly soured as the men started wiping out each other's gene pools. Their descendants clung on, however, jumped into the Bible, procreated and went forth. Norfolk Island and New Zealand now have substantial numbers of Bounty descendants, and a small number still till the soil and go to Saturday church on Pitcairn.

Pitcairn Island Pitcairn Island, volcanic island (1995 est. pop. 50), 2.5 sq mi (6.5 sq km), South Pacific, SE of Tuamotu Archipelago. A British possession since 1839, the island is officially administered by the British High Commissioner to New Zealand. Local matters, however, are handled by a council of islanders. The Pitcairn Island district includes the uninhabited atolls of Henderson, Ducie, and Oeno islands. Handicrafts are exported. The island was discovered in 1767 by Philip Carteret, a British admiral, but was named after Robert Pitcairn, the midshipman who first sighted it. It was colonized in 1790 by mutineers from the Bounty and Tahitian women. Their descendants, who speak English, still inhabit the island. In 1856 overpopulation caused the removal of the inhabitants, at their request, to

    Mutiny on the HMS Bounty
In 1789, crewmembers of HMS Bounty, led by Masters Mate Fletcher Christian and Midshipman Ned Young, mutinied against the command of Lt. William Bligh. Bligh and his supporters were set adrift in the ship's launch, and against all odds, Bligh led them over 3,000 miles to safety in Batavia (now Djakarta, Indonesia). The mutineers returned to Tahiti, where some stayed and were later captured. A handful of the mutineers along with their Tahitian consorts sailed the ship to Pitcairn Island where their descendants live today. This web site will tell you much about this famous event in maritime history, about which 6 movies, 1 play, and over 2,000 books and articles have been written.

In the year 1787, Lieutenant William Bligh, a young British Naval Officer having most recently served as sailing master to Captain James Cook on his voyages to the South Pacific, was commissioned by Sir Joseph Banks and the British Admiralty, to undertake a voyage in a small ship, HMS Bounty. The goal of the voyage was to obtain a large number of breadfruit plantings to be taken to the Caribbean where they would be transplanted to provide food for the slaves in those colonies. For a brief introduction to this historic voyage, you may want to look at:
The Saga of HMS Bounty and Pitcairn Island

By Butch Kerr The voyage was difficult, and ill-feelings were rampant, although probably no more than on other long sea voyages of the period. After a long stay in Tahiti to enable the gathering and stowing of the breadfruit plantings on board the ship, the Bounty began its voyage to the Caribbean and then back to England. On the morning of April 28th, 1789, led by Masters Mate Fletcher Christian, twelve crewmembers staged the now famous mutiny, capturing the ship, and setting Lt. Bligh and his supporters adrift in the ship's launch.

Pacific News member of Culture Gallery Introduction ANGLONESIA Anglonesia is a neologism used here to refer to Australia New Zealand and the United States in the Pacific (ANZUS). The progress from colonialism to independence in the Pacific Islands region (both north and south of the equator) has not brought an end to the influence of the former colonial powers. Presently, there are ten territories or dependencies linked directly to an extraregional government, and five others are constrained in their foreign policies by the terms of their free associaton compacts. Like these territories, the independent states are also affected by the political, security and economic policies of the extraregional powers. There continues to be an overlap of interests between outsiders and islanders, which is likely to persist even as more island stated begin to exert their influence more and more within the region as well as globally.
