The simplest way to form an image is through a pinhole. Light reflected from any point on a subject will pass through a small hole and produce a slightly diffuse image (image circle) of that point. The accumulated overlapping image-circles form the total image. Pinhole images are necessarily slightly blurred about their soft focus appearance is often quite pleasing. A lens, unlike a pinhole sharpens rather than diffuses an image. The pinhole camera is great for handcoloring since you can make a big print to start with. Basically pinhole photography is considered lensless photography. A tiny hole replaces the lens and once light passes through the hole an image is formed. As mentioned above, pinhole images are less sharp than images made with a lens. The pinhole images have nearly an indefinite depth of field. Exposures are long, ranging from half a second to several hours. Images can be exposed on film or paper - negative or positive; black and white, or color. Angeliki Artemis Rigos and Kevin Salemme
Merrimack College, Department of Chemistry, North Andover, MA 01845 This interdisciplinary activity combines chemistry and art through the construction and use of a pinhole camera. We focused on the chemistry of the black and white photographic process as the science component of this activity. The reactions involved are good examples o photochemistry and multiphase chemical reactions, since the light sensitive materials (silver halides) are in the form of a gelatin emulsion of microscopic crystals. Pinhole Photography - History, Images, Cameras, Formulas
Introduction
Pinhole photography is lensless photography. A tiny hole replaces the lens. Light passes through the hole; an image is formed in the camera.
Pinhole cameras are small or large, improvised or designed with great care. Cameras have been made of sea shells, many have been made of oatmeal boxes, coke cans or cookie boxes, at least one has been made of a discarded refrigerator. Cameras have been cast in plaster like a face mask, constructed from beautiful hardwoods, built of metal with bellows and a range of multiple pinholes. Station wagons have been used as pinhole cameras - and rooms in large buildings.
Basically a pinhole camera is a box, with a tiny hole in one end and film or photographic paper in the other.
Pinhole cameras are used for fun, for art and for science.
Designing and building the cameras are great fun. Making images with cameras you have made yourself is a great pleasure, too. But in serious photography the pinhole camera is just an imaging device with its advantages and limitations, special characteristics and potentials. By making the best of the camera's potential great images can be produced. Some of the images could not have been produced with a lens.
Characteristics
Pinhole images are softer - less sharp - than pictures made with a lens. The images have nearly infinite depth of field. Wide angle images remain absolutely rectilinear. On the other hand, pinhole images suffer from greater chromatic aberration than pictures made with a simple lens, and they tolerate little enlargement.

Updated on 04-02-2003 Finally, I'm updating this page with some new images! If you really miss the old Pinhole Photography page , it's still around. This time around, I'm organizing the photos by camera. For more info on pinhole photography, look at my page about determining exposure times for pinhole photographs or click on Photography at the top of this page.
8"x10" Box Camera
This is the first pinhole camera I ever made. I made it during a pinhole photography class that I took at the Cambridge Center for Adult Education some years ago. Alan Greene taught the class (check out his book, Primitive Photography ) and it was great fun. The camera is made from black foam core and gaffer's tape. Composing lines were drawn on with a yellow gel pen to help when trying to frame the image. The shutter is a piece of black masking tape and the pinhole was made in a piece of .002" thick brass. The f-stop is f133.
Tea Can Camera
I made a camera out of a small can that used to hold teabags. It's focal length is 80mm and it's f-stop is f242. The picture of me was taken in Harvard Square - I ripped off the electrical tape shutter, then realized that the cement that I was laying on was about 100 degrees and I had to suffer through the rest of the exposure! The apples on the snowy roof were at Attitash Mountain Village in New Hampshire.
Oatmeal Can Camera
I made a camera from an oatmeal container using these instructions . Mine is a little different in that I put two pinholes in it. You only use one or the other, but they're at different heights to allow you to drop in either a 5"x7" piece of photo paper or an 8"x10" one. I don't think I've ever used anything other than 8"x10" though, so whatever. Anyway, here's

Photograph Your Art ... Printer Friendly Version September 2003 Pinhole Photography by: Diane Dobson Barton You may have heard of pinhole photography, but what is it? You know it is a form of photography, but what is it exactly? Simply put, pinhole photography is a unique method of taking pictures, with a camera that has no lens. It is not a new art form, but it has recently gone through a renewed popularity. This renewed interest is due in part to the backlash to the onslaught of digital photography and art forms. As with digital photography, a pinhole camera can help bring your creativity alive. But with pinhole photography you can design and build the camera itself, creating an element of control that gives it a unique twist. Once the basic concept of a pinhole is understood, and you are able to create a workable camera and entire new world of possibilities are opened. And your only real limitation is your own imagination. If you have never tried pinhole photography and would like to know what it is, or if you have and would like to know more about the process, this article is written with you in mind.

Comments from people who have read this book Rating: 5/5 - great pinhole book for the beginner or teacher This is a wonderful introductory text to the world of pinhole photography; Mr. Shull is very clear, and provides easy to follow instructions and diagrams for creating simple pinhole cameras and printing the resultant images. His instructions are well-laid enough for even a photographic novice to use this books as a teaching text, for example for children, as a good science project for understanding light and/or basic photography. He keeps it simple enough that experienced pinholers will want to look elsewhere for detailed technical information or designs to push the edges of pinhole practice, but this is also the book's strength as a beginner's guide. Strongly recommended. Rating: 5/5 - Excellent reference for fotografers and teachers Jim Shull's second book is an expanded version of the first, 'The Hole Thing', which inspired me to pursue pinhole photography. The new version includes more information and fotografs. Just as the first book, it differentiates between photography and fotografy.

From: Camera Obscura World Pinhole Day 2004 is Sunday, 25 April this year. The idea is to have people around the world take a pinhole photograph on that day and submit them. I wasn't interested in making one out of an oatmeal box or buying an expensive wooden model but when I noticed that you can buy body caps with a pinhole for your 35mm camera and an exposure guide I've decided to give it a try. Jarkko laughed at the idea of taking an expensive camera and turning it into a cardboard box. Everyone's a critic. :)

35mm Single-Lens Reflex Pinhole Photography
A traditional pinhole camera is just a box with a small hole in one side opposite a piece of light-sensitive film on the other. Since the hole is small, a recognizable image is formed on the film. The device beautifully illustrates photography in its most simple form. Because film is easily exposed by stray light, the process of sealing the camera, loading film into it and processing the film can be difficult. The following technique can be used to create a pinhole camera out of any regular film camera that has interchangeable lenses. The result is a pinhole camera that uses regular 35mm film, takes multiple pictures without reloading, and can even meter the light. Cameras are usually shipped with a round cap covering the lens mount on the front of the camera. (If you're missing this cap, or you would prefer not to modify your current one, then you can probably order a new one from the manufacturer.) This cap can be turned into a pinhole lens for the camera as follows. First, drill a 1/4 inch hole through the middle of the cap. Get a piece of black metal foil (or use a magic marker to color a piece of regular tin foil black) and then tape the tin foil over the hole. Lastly, create a small hole through the center of the foil with a pin. Remove the camera's lens and place the modified lens mount cover on the camera. You now have a 35mm, single-lens-reflex, auto-exposure, auto-advance, pinhole camera. It will look something like the picture at the top of this page, on the left. A picture taken with the camera is shown on the right. Click on the images for larger versions.

Photography with a Pinhole Camera
Robert Alber
Back to Basics
Taking pictures with a pinhole camera is one of the simplest forms of the photographic process. But wonderfully, making and using a pinhole camera provides the student with an understanding and appreciation for not only photography, but human physiology, chemistry, light physics, mathematics, art and possibly, a little magic. All cameras, from the most sophisticated to the pinhole, rely on the same elementary principles, performing in similar fashion to the human eye .Like your eyes, the camera needs light to operate. Light moves into the eye through the pupil a hole that is made smaller or larger by the iris Light gets into the camera through a hole called an aperture that is made larger or smaller by a diaphragm . The camera can also shut out all light with a shutter , similar to closing your eyelids, or opening them to let the light pass. Recall what happens when you enter a movie theater on a sunny afternoon. It takes some time for your eyes to adjust to the low light. At first you cannot see anything, but soon you began to make out objects and within a short time you can see pretty well, even in that darkened room. This is much like a camera making a long exposure in low light. The diaphragm opens as wide as it can to allow maximum illumination. For your eyes, the iris opens wide. The eye's
