63. Aeternus - The Photography Of Lisa A. Johnston Including Pinhole Photography, Ph
A pinhole photographic documentary analysis examining conditions of contemporary urban environments. The circumstances of urban society is scrutinized through pinhole photography.
http://www.aeternus.com/urban/
Urban Anthropology is a photographic analysis examining conditions of contemporary urban environments. Using only a pinhole camera and focusing on the history of structure, relics of our past are considered as they exist today. Their influence on the circumstance of urban society is scrutinized through the visual challenge of photography. The substance of the images is a record of existing urban position.
Project Scope The project was begun in St. Louis, Missouri in 1995 and focused on the abandonment of the downtown urban environment. Suburban sprawl has run rampant as over 10% of city residents have packed their bags since 1990 and headed for the lifestyles of suburban development. Left in the wake of exodus are the historical remnants of a once thriving urban community. The work of quality craftsmen and artisans abandoned for strip malls and mass produced domiciles.
The Urban Anthropology seeks out these forgotten places and examines what they have and are becoming. Who is left behind as caretaker of these surroundings, and their interactions there are quite incidental to this project. The appearance of human form is sparse in the images, although when needed, figures do lend further significance to the singularity of the recorded situation.
While St. Louis is an example of abandonment in progress, the second city of examination is an archetype of the final result of urban desertion.

Pinhole Photography
A pinhole camera is the simplest camera there is. It only consists of a light-tight box with a piece of film or photographic paper inside, and a small hole to let light in. Pinhole cameras have very interesting properties that make them very different from cameras with lenses, and should be used accordingly.
What is a Pinhole Camera?
If you expose a piece of film to light without a lens or pinhole, you don't get an image. This is because every point on the film is reached by light from different directions, so the information in these light rays is mixed in that spot. You have to find a way to map each point on the film to a point in the world, only then you get a picture. This is what a pinhole does: It only lets one single ray of light hit every spot on the film (in theory, anyway), and blocks out all the others. So the light rays paint an image, one ray per point. This is somewhat similar to a camera with a lens (or lens system) that effectively serves the same purpose. But a lens can collect more light, leading to shorter exposure times and much more flexibility.

You might have made one in science class. Punch a hole in an oatmeal cereal can, put film inside, uncover the hole momentarily, and then develop the film. Pinholes have been in use a long time, originating as perspective viewing devices as far back as 1425 by Filippo Brunelleschi. Camera obscuras, based on the pinhole principle, were built - one example exists in Edinburgh, Scotland in a tower on the Royal Mile below the Castle. Some of the first pinhole photographs were made by Sir David Brewster in 1859. By the early 1900s, pinhole photographs were again relegated to the dustbin of history, with lensed cameras overtaking the pinhole in convenience and speed. Kodak briefly made a commercial pinhole camera in the 1940s. Pinhole photography today remains primarily an artistic medium enjoyed by a dedicated group of photographers, and several web sites provide rich information on pinhole photography techniques.

On this site Philippe Moroux makes voluntarily no difference between the kallitype process and the Vandyke or Van Dyke Process. Van Dyke prints are Kallitype prints. May be the Argyrotype print could also be called a kallitype... Have a try?

The sacred beauty of these ancient places I have photographed can scarcely be translated, but perhaps their intrigue may be visually interpreted through the pinhole photography.
http://www.aeternus.com/new_mexico/
Pinhole photography is an escape.
An escape from the demands of the incredible technology of photographic equipment today.
Within pinhole photography there is a simplicity in photography. This uncomplicated beauty is what attracted me to the art of photography in the first place. Now, I escape to this elementary place whenever I can. I run from my computer, scanner, Nikons and Hassleblads to this mysterious and enchanted world of the pinhole and photography. For me, it is a way of meditating, of centering myself and my love of imagery.
The attractiveness of the pinhole camera's form and charm of approach lead undeniably towards an uncomplicated corroboration between camera and subject. The learned disciplines of the pinhole camera lead to a mysterious quality photograph. From light falloff to infinite depth of field and long exposures, the image's presence is almost eerie in its aberration from traditional photographic processes. The sacred beauty of these ancient places I have photographed can scarcely be translated, but perhaps their intrigue may be visually interpreted through the pinhole photography.
I hope you enjoy your own escape while viewing these images of New Mexico.

M y first involvement with Pinhole was some years ago when I suggested Karen my daughter to present for a science fair a project on that topic (she was in middle school at the time). With some guidance/help she made 2 Pinhole "Camera Obscura" using cardboard boxes, tape and stretched translucent plastic bags (as ground "glass"), these "Cameras" where aimed to a 75W incandescent bulb and an image of the bulb appeared on the stretched plastic. By the way, she won the first prize!! Using Polaroid 4x5 B&W film I made some pictures of "still lifes" that she also displayed at her "fair stand". This picture is my first pinhole picture ever, click on it to see a larger size.
After the above mentioned encounter with pinhole imaging and although I kept reading about it (mainly in the rec.photo newsgroups), I did not made any pinhole picture until recently.
  • 35mm format: I modify disposable 35mm cameras installing a pinhole in place of the lens and reload the camera with B&W film. I have 2 of this cameras, one is 14mm in "focal length" and the other one is 28mm. Here are some of the images I have made with such cameras:

A friend introduced me to the concept of pinhole photography. Pinhole.org has a series of photo galleries for pinhole photographs.
http://jclement.ca/photography/pinhole.html
Pinhole Photography Home Albums Photography Software ... Weblog A friend introduced me to the concept of pinhole photography. It sounded interesting so I searched around on google and what I found was pretty amazing. What sounded like just a neat trick actually has a huge following. The basic idea is that if you take a picture through a small enough hole you (a) don't need a complex lense, and (b) get a pretty much infinite depth of field. Some people do this using SLRs with a modified body cap but it sounds like the real fun/experience comes from building your own camera and developing the photos yourself. So far I've been trying the SLR approach and to date my pictures are pretty bad. They are all very much out of focus. I know there is an optimum hole size that is determined from the distance of the hole to the film. I believe the distance from the body cap to my film is about 50mm which would mean I need a pinhole about 0.3in in diameter which is pretty tough to measure. I've been trying out different pinhole sizes so hopefully soon I'll start producing images the look a bit better.

Portfolio of the visual art of Gregg D Kemp, including pinhole photography.
http://www.GreggKemp.com
Gregg D Kemp Home Portfolio Schedule Résumé ... Contact I have been making photographs with pinhole cameras since the early 1970's. Pinhole photography allows me to construct images of things in a special way that is not always as things appear to the eye. A pinhole camera can record motion, changes in light, and changes in time in a way that is different than what the human mind sees. It is able to objectively collect and record all the things happening in its field of vision over a period of time. But this is not how the human eye sees things, and that's a large part of the intrigue for me - to see what develops from an image. Lately I have been taking "hand-held" photographs that last several seconds, and also overnight exposures that last several hours.
I am also showing here a portfolio of my paintings from the 1980's and 1990's, and a portfolio of non-pinhole photographs using techniques referred to as "painting with light." Island Webworks
