A Greek Pigeon Keeper
Hello pigeon keepers. My name is Stathis Polimeris, I was born in and I keep a real estate agency in the town of Veria (which is in Greece and 75km west of Thessaloniki). I' ve been going in for with pigeons (Greek Pigeons) since I was a child. I like all kinds of pigeons when they are pureblood and they can adjust themselves to the tastes and to the demands of the pigeon keeper. In Veria at 1990 I had the idea to organize a pigeon competition in Veria. I found other pigeon keepers who agreed to it and since then, every year from the end of January until the beginning of February we organize this competition which people, who take up "flying" pigeons as a hobby, from all over Greece come to watch. My favorite breed
I ended up to deal with Voutes from which I know they are birds that originated in a town in the region of Thessalia (central Greece), Tirnavos. They have a very beautiful poise with a very athletic shape, very intelligent, very nice ascension (they ascend vertically, with open tail). They fly in a straight line but stray and they descend with a lot of din. They can fly from 4 up to 10 times per day.

Secret of homing pigeons revealed
When they have flown a journey more than once, carrier pigeons establish a habitual route, scientists said. Story Tools YOUR E-MAIL ALERTS Homing pigeons Research or Create your own Manage alerts What is this? LONDON, England (Reuters) The secret of carrier pigeons' uncanny ability to find their way home has been discovered by British scientists: The feathered navigators follow the roads just like we do. Researchers at Oxford University spent 10 years studying homing pigeons using Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites and were stunned to find the birds often don't navigate by taking bearing from the sun. Instead they fly along motorways, turn at junctions and even go around roundabouts, adding miles to their journeys, British newspapers reported. "It really has knocked our research team sideways," Professor Tim Guilford said in the Daily Telegraph. "It is striking to see the pigeons fly straight down the A34 Oxford bypass, and then sharply curve off at the traffic lights before curving off again at the roundabout," he said.

One of the very strange things you might see on the London Underground is the London pigeon which often travels on the tube as if it owns the place. If you're travelling on the tube in London you'd better get used to it.
Also, rats scuttle around the tracks of the underground too. Although it seems that the rats on the New York Subway are a bit bolder (see below)
Please let me have any unusual sightings of pigeons (or rats) by visiting my guest book on the first page of this site.
Now read on Won another award in March 1999 which was given by someone named after the main character in the Stop the Pigeon cartoon so I'm really pleased.

PIGEONS (AB)USED DURING WARS
Back to Index
One can always observe pigeons on pictures with Kamadeva, one of the oldest Hindu love gods. Christian religion tells the story of Noah who sent a pigeon 3 times to look for a dry piece of land. Little pigeon statues were found, made 5000 years before our era. The statues have a striking resemblance to modern race pigeons. Greek and Roman history writers quote pigeons. Pigeons informed the home front on victories and defeats of kings and generals. Pigeons were the newsmen between Iraq and at that time Syria in the 12th century. Sultans built pigeon houses. Belgian and Dutch newspapers depended for a great deal on pigeons for their information. Napoleon's defeat in the battle of "Waterloo" was reported to England by Nathan Rotschild's pigeons. World War I During World War I some actions were undertaken after that forces were informed by photos taken by military pigeons. German forces took possession of more than one million Belgian race pigeons. A war memorial in Brussels reminds of the military pigeons and their fanciers who died during the war. There is also a war memorial in Lille(France) that reminds of the more then 20.000 military pigeons that were killed during the war.

WELCOME to Project PigeonWatch,
part of Urban Bird Studies in the Citizen Science Program
at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology Project PigeonWatch is an international research project that involves people of all ages and locations in a real scientific endeavor. People participate by counting pigeons and recording courtship behaviors observed in their neighborhood pigeon flocks. Participants send their data to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, where scientists compile the information and use it to examine two questions of scientific interest: 1. Why do city pigeons exist in so many colors? 2. What color mate does a pigeon choose? PigeonWatch combines real "hands-on" science with neighborhood-based education. Although PigeonWatching can be as easy as observing pigeons along a city street, the data are crucial for scientific research, and PigeonWatchers learn about birds and how science and scientists work. Cool Pigeon Facts Origins: Size and weight: A pigeon is about 13 inches (32 cm) in length from bill to tail and weighs a little less than a pound (0.35 kg). Males are slightly bigger than females. A pigeon family
  • Hen: an adult female pigeon Cock: an adult male pigeon Hatchling: a newly hatched pigeon
just a few days old Squab:
When ready to leave its nest, a squab can sometimes weigh more than its parents. Peeper or Squeaker: a young bird that is learning to eat Fledgling: a bird that is ready to fly or that has just
taken its first flight Juvenile: a bird out of its nest and flying but less than
    eight months old
Nest and roosting sites: Nests: Pigeons build their nests with small twigs. A cock brings the nesting material to his mate, one piece at a time, and she builds the nest. Nests are usually well-hidden and hard to find. Eggs and incubation: Pigeons usually lay two white eggs. The parents take turns keeping their eggs warm (incubating). Males usually stay on the nest during the day; females, at night. Eggs take about 18 days to hatch. Food for young: Both male and female parent pigeons produce a special substance called "pigeon milk," which they feed to their hatchlings during their first week of life. Pigeon milk is made in a special part of the bird’s digestive system called the "crop." When hatchlings are about one week old, the parents start regurgitating seeds with crop milk; eventually seeds replace the pigeon milk.

Pigeons take the highway
Some birds follow roads instead of flying direct.
10 February 2004 HELEN R. PILCHER Pigeons may use familar landmarks again and again. Researchers may have discovered how pigeons find their way along familiar routes. Instead of heading straight for their destination, they follow main roads, railways and rivers. Tim Guilford and colleagues from Oxford University fitted more than 50 homing pigeons with tiny tracking devices. They then monitored them, second by second, as they made the familiar journey back to their loft. Some of the birds that used landmarks did so again and again on separate occasions, says Guilford, following a set path to theirloft. "One pigeon flies along the road to the first roundabout, takes the third exit, goes along the dual carriageway to the next roundabout, then leaves the road and goes cross-country," he says. The birds can add an extra 20% or more to their journey by following these features, says Guilford. It may be more demanding physically, he says, but easier mentally. Other birds probably use a similar strategy. Even crows may not fly 'as the crow flies', says Guilford.

AN EVENING (WASTED) WITH TOM LEHRER
1. Poisoning Pigeons in the Park
I'd like to take you now on wings of song as it were, and try and help you forget, perhaps, for a while, your drab wretched lives. Here is a song all about springtime in general, and in particular about one of the many delightful pastimes that the coming of spring affords us all. Spring is here, a-suh-puh-ring is here. Life is skittles and life is beer. I think the loveliest time of the year is the spring. I do, don't you? 'Course you do. But there's one thing that makes spring complete for me, And makes every Sunday a treat for me. All the world seems in tune On a spring afternoon, When we're poisoning pigeons in the park. Every Sunday you'll see My sweetheart and me, As we poison the pigeons in the park. When they see us coming, the birdies all try an' hide, But they still go for peanuts when coated with cyanide. The sun's shining bright, Everything seems all right, When we're poisoning pigeons in the park. We've gained notoriety, And caused much anxiety In the Audubon Society With our games. They call it impiety And lack of propriety, And quite a variety Of unpleasant names. But it's not against any religion To want to dispose of a pigeon. So if Sunday you're free, Why don't you come with me, And we'll poison the pigeons in the park. And maybe we'll do In a squirrel

Special Report LIVING SUPPORT AREA 7, Kuwait (AP) Nearly a month ago, the Marines of the 7th Regiment were given 43 chickens to raise and nurture, chickens that were to repay them by helping detect a possible Iraqi chemical or biological attack. Within a week and a half, 42 were dead, although no one suspects foul play. On Friday, the Marines got a new avian force a company of pigeons. The birds are meant to be the military equivalent of a canary in a coal mine. During a possible invasion of Iraq, they are to ride with a caretaker in armored vehicles. If they start to get sick, it could indicate a chemical attack and give the Marines a chance to put on their gas masks. The United States says Iraqi President Saddam Hussein has several chemical and biological weapons at his disposal for use against U.S. troops. President Bush has threatened to invade Iraq to force it to give up those weapons.

On Friday , March 12, 2004 , a group of several dozen Internet addicts from Israel and abroad, gathered in the large grass field of the OHALO Center near the Sea of Galilee . The purpose of the gathering was to try and improve Wi-Fly - pigeon-empowered wireless internet and to confront this technology against ADSL. The participants sent 3 homing pigeons to 100 km distance, each carrying 20-22 tiny memory cards containing 1.3 GB, amounting in total of 4 GB of data. Dr. Yossi Vardi , with Ami Ben-Bassat, a science writer, and Guy Vardi, the CPO (chief pigeon/technical officer) conceived and run the test.
