Pierce was born in a log cabin. When he ran away from Hancock Academy because of the stern discipline, his father made him return, walking part way through a rainstorm. Later he graduated fifth in his class and went on to become a lawyer. His Presidency: In 1853, through the Gadsden Purchase, Pierce acquired parts of present-day Arizona and New Mexico from Mexico. In 1854 he signed a treaty giving trade privileges to Canada in return for fishing rights. He endorsed the Kansas-Nebraska Act which touched off a violent slavery debate and led to his failure to be re-nominated.

Keep in mind that in the table above, the % of the U.S. population for religious groups are current figures. Religious groups have had much different proportions at various time in U.S. history. One of the most over-represented religious groups among U.S. presidents is Unitarianism. Despite merging with Universalism in the 1960s, the combined proportion of Unitarian Universalists in the U.S. population is just 0.2% of the population (one in every 500 Americans). Yet there have been 4 Unitarian presidents. Another over-represented religious group among U.S. presidents is Dutch Reformed, by virtue of having two U.S. presidents, yet having only a small number of people left in the country who identify themselves as Reformed. The contemporary heir to the Dutch Reformed churches is the "Reformed Church in America," which has about 300,000 members in the U.S. and Canada. (Alternatively, one might count only a single president as Dutch Reformed, if Theodore Roosevelt is counted as an Episcopalian sources differ on this subject . Even only one Dutch Reformed president would constitute statistical over-representation.) After that, Disciples of Christ, Episcopalians, and Quakers have also had representation in the White House far outstripping their proportion of the U.S. population.

    PIERCE, FRANKLIN
Pierce's devotion to the Democratic party, his success in the middle reaches of American politics, and his brief service in the Mexican War were all useful credentials at the faction-ridden, stalemated Democratic National Convention in 1852. Nominated for president, he was elected after a campaign based on traditional Democratic policies, coupled with a strong commitment to maintaining peace between the recently quarreling North and South. But Pierce was almost immediately faced by a renewal of the sectional crisis, this time over the right of southerners to bring their slaves into Kansas. His handling of the conflicting forces and of the extreme tensions provoked in Congress and throughout the country by Stephen A. Douglas's Kansas-Nebraska bill, which opened the area to slavery, was inept, and led to a period of disastrous political turmoil. Despite his failures, Pierce sought nomination for a second term in 1856. His administration had had several foreign policy successes, and he had kept the partisan faith against attempts to increase the national government's involvement in economic affairs. The Democratic leaders, however, preferred someone unconnected with the recent disruptions as the only way to regain the electoral initiative. Defeated at the national convention, Pierce returned to New Hampshire in 1857, emerging briefly at the outset of the Civil War as part of an effort by elder statesmen to find one more compromise to prevent the Union's breakup.

The Inaugural Address of President Franklin Pierce Friday, March 4, 1853 On religious grounds, former Senator and Congressman Franklin Pierce chose
"to affirm" rather than "to swear" the executive oath of office. He was the
only President to use the choice offered by the Constitution. Famed as an
officer of a volunteer brigade in the Mexican War, he was nominated as the
Democratic candidate in the national convention on the 49th ballot. His name
had not been placed in nomination until the 35th polling of the delegates.
Chief Justice Roger Taney administered the oath of office on the East
Portico of the Capitol. Several weeks before arriving in Washington, the
Pierces' only surviving child had been killed in a train accident.

IT a relief to feel that no heart but my own can know the personal regret and bitter sorrow over which I have been borne to a position so suitable for others rather than desirable for myself.
