Ancient Battles of the Picts and the Brigantes
The Picts battle the Brigantes The Picts and Brigantes are two of the oldest pre-Roman inhabitants of Great Britain. Both inhabited and battled the Romans and each other for the lands of Northern England and Scotland. According to Britain Express the Brigantes were the most powerful Celtic tribe prior to the Roman invasion of 43 AD. Like the Picts and other Celtic tribes, the Brigantes were often matriarchical. They were ruled by queen Cartimandua when the Romans came. Initially they were friendly to the Romans, sometimes betraying other Celtic leaders to the invaders. Eventually, Cartimandua deserted her husband Ventius and fled Brigante territory. Ventius rebelled against the Romans but was defeated by Petillius Cerialis in 73 AD. They lived as a Roman protectorate until 138 AD when Antonius, for whom the Antonine Wall is named, pushed north from Hadrian's wall. The Brigantes fought, and eventually the Romans fell back to the more defensible Hadrian's wall. Examples of Brigante art and culture are available at the archaeology society Brigantes Nation . Especially notice the wonderful gold and bronze pieces of the Celtic Iron Age. More detailed information about early British tribes is located at Roman-Britain.org

Almost 1,400 years ago, on the 20th of May of the year 685, a naked man, his muscular body and face covered in blue elaborate tattoos, urged his small Highland pony forward and studied the scene visible on the valley below him. He was close enough not only to count silently the tents and fires of the huge army assembled below, but he could also hear the guttural sounds of the Teutonic language spoken by the hated Anglian invader who had occupied the southern part of his ancestral land for almost 30 years. The mounted naked warrior looked behind him and examined his own smaller army, made up of both men and women tattooed in designs and symbols like the ones on his scarred body. His name was Bridei and he was the King of the Northern Picts, the most ancient of all Britannic races, who predated the Celtic immigrants from Ireland and the Teutonic invader from Angle land. On that Easter day he could hear the Latin chants of the Christian priests who accompanied the Anglian king, and he knew that his own Pictish army was not only outnumbered five to one, but also that so far the Angles had been invincible against the once Roman Britons in the south. He raised his hand and for an instant, the future of the land called Albion by the Picts, Caledonia by the Romans and known as Scotland today, hung in the air. He brought his hand down, unsheathed his sword and charged down the hill.

MARCH OF THE TITANS - A HISTORY OF THE WHITE RACE Chapter 28 : The Isle of Influence - England, Scotland, Wales and the United Kingdom Part I : Ancient Britain Even its most vehement detractors will admit that the nation of Great Britain has been one of the foremost countries of modern Western Civilization. Its achievements are legion - at one stage its empire existed on all the continents of the world except Antarctica. Its language became the second most widely spoken language on earth (after Chinese) - its writers, poets and playwrights were the greatest the world has ever seen since the days of the Greek classics - and its history and culture has become ingrained in the traditions of many people on earth. Britain was also directly responsible for the initial mass settlement of the North American continent that, together with immigrants from the rest of Europe, created the giant that became America. The industrial revolution, which it spearheaded, shaped the infrastructure of the current world. Yet it is a small island, barely over half the size of France. The history of this island of kings and queens is remarkable one and worthy of an overview. Unfortunately much of English history is also filled with incessant petty squabbling and infighting.

Lugodoc's Guide to Arthurian Myth
Following his obsessive re-chronicling of Irish and Welsh Celtic myth, Lugodoc felt compelled to tackle the big one: Arthurian Myth. King Arthur is without doubt the great, definitive British hero. There are an enormous number of sources of Arthurian myth, many referring to earlier known texts, and more referring to earlier lost texts. Very few tie in neatly with the commonly held image of the story of Arthur, and most hold many surprises.
The Evolution of the Myth
It seems to Lugodoc that "Arthur" was originally a Celtic title, meaning something like "bear of battle", and that more than one of these British heroes fought against the invading Irish, Picts, Danes, Jutes, Angles and Saxons in the chaotic century after the withdrawal of Rome from Britain. The mutation of the Arthurian story from dark age history into medieval romance seems to have occurred like this: Late 5 th century Romano-British Dux Bellorum (Lord of Battles) Arthur defeats Saxons at Mt Badon Early 6 th century Welsh Celtic chief Arthur defeats Modred at Cammlan th to 12 th centuries Christian monks write down history from the oral and earlier written records, confusing several Arthurs into one. The high-gravity hero myth attracts elements from Welsh-Celtic-pagan and Anglo-Christian history and myth, and begins to grow

SOURCES OF THE EARLY HISTORY OF WALES.
IN order to discriminate between what is true and what is fabulous in the early history of Wales as presented to us in the historic literature subsequent to the twelfth century, and to disentangle the fragments of real history contained in them, so as to enable us to form something like a true conception of its leading features, it is necessary to test it by comparing it with the statements in contemporary authorities of other countries, and by referring to such earlier native documents as have come down to us. Of the latter class there are only three, and it is requisite that we should form a right conception of their authority. The first are the works of Gildas, who wrote in Latin. They are usually considered as consisting of two pieces, the Historia and the Epistola , but they may be viewed as forming one treatise. Questions have been raised upon the lives of Gildas, as to whether there was one or two persons of the namean earlier and a later; but, viewing the question in its literary aspect, it is of little consequence, for the treatise is evidently the work of one man, and there is evidence in the work itself of his date. The writer states that he was p. 34

http://www.tartans.com/official/MacDuff/usa/history.htm
The Legendary History of Clan MacDuff (CLAN DHUIBH) The Duffs are descended from those original Gaels who inhabited the Highlands of Scotland long before the Roman Invasion, and before the Christian era. Their ancient Gaelic name, Dhuibh, is pronounced Duff, and signifies a dark complected man with dark hair. The first Scottish Highlanders were members of the ancient German Tribes who crossed over the German Ocean and settled first on the east and north coast of the barren Island of Caledonia, later moving inland. They were of the Chauci, Cimbri, Suevi, Catti, and others, all fair complected with either red or brown hair, and of a giant stature and enormous endurance. The people of Britain and the lowlands of Scotland were originally from France and southern Europe, but the Highlanders from the beginning, kept themselves apart, and did not mingle with the lowlanders, whom they hated. The Duffs were of German Catti ancestry, having settled on the shores of Caithness in very early times. At first they were of the ancient Kournaovioi Tribe who occupied the north peninsula of Caithness, later moving down into Moray below the Moray Firth, where they were Mormaers of the Kanteai Tribe for many ages. At one time Moray included all the north central Highlands, and the more reliable historians agree that the famous Thane of Fife came from Moray, previous to the great historical event which brought him to the attention of posterity. With the other Caledonian Tribes the Duffs fought the Roman Invaders and thus prevented the foreigners from gaining a foothold in Scotland.

Chapter II - Ancient England Under the Early Saxons The Romans had scarcely gone away from Britain, when the Britons began to wish they had never left it. For, the Romans being gone, and the Britons being much reduced in numbers by their long wars, the Picts and Scots came pouring in, over the broken and unguarded wall of Severus , in swarms. They plundered the richest towns, and killed the people; and came back so often for more booty and more slaughter, that the unfortunate Britons lived a life of terror. As if the Picts and Scots were not bad enough on land, the Saxons attacked the islanders by sea; and, as if something more were still wanting to make them miserable, they quarrelled bitterly among themselves as to what prayers they ought to say, and how they ought to say them. The priests, being very angry with one another on these questions, cursed one another in the heartiest manner; and (uncommonly like the old Druids) cursed all the people whom they could not persuade. So, altogether, the Britons were very badly off, you may believe. They were in such distress, in short, that they sent a letter to Rome entreating help - which they called the Groans of the Britons; and in which they said, 'The barbarians chase us into the sea, the sea throws us back upon the barbarians, and we have only the hard choice left us of perishing by the sword, or perishing by the waves.' But, the Romans could not help them, even if they were so inclined; for they had enough to do to defend themselves against their own enemies, who were then very fierce and strong. At last, the Britons, unable to bear their hard condition any longer, resolved to make peace with the Saxons, and to invite the Saxons to come into their country, and help them to keep out the Picts and Scots.

At last, the Britons, unable to bear their hard condition any longer, resolved to make peace with the Saxons, and to invite the Saxons to come into their country, and help them to keep out the Picts and Scots. It was a British Prince named VORTIGERN who took this resolution, and who made a treaty of friendship with HENGIST and HORSA, two Saxon chiefs. Both of these names, in the old Saxon language, signify Horse; for the Saxons, like many other nations in a rough state, were fond of giving men the names of animals, as Horse, Wolf, Bear, Hound. The Indians of North America, - a very inferior people to the Saxons, though - do the same to this day. HENGIST and HORSA drove out the Picts and Scots; and VORTIGERN, being grateful to them for that service, made no opposition to their settling themselves in that part of England which is called the Isle of Thanet, or to their inviting over more of their countrymen to join them. But HENGIST had a beautiful daughter named ROWENA; and when, at a feast, she filled a golden goblet to the brim with wine, and gave it to VORTIGERN, saying in a sweet voice, `Dear King, thy health!` the King fell in love with her. My opinion is, that the cunning HENGIST meant him to do so, in order that the Saxons might have greater influence with him; and that the fair ROWENA came to that feast, golden goblet and all, on purpose.
