G. Conn's Birth and the 120th Anniversary of the Conn Company by Margaret Downie Banks (Vermillion, South Dakota: The Shrine to Music Museum, 1994). Conn Pianos (1940-1969) The company later purchased the Janssen Piano Company (1964) and pursued acoustic keyboard research under the leadership of Earle Kent. This led to the short-term production of the Conn piano. In January of 1969, Kent led a team of Conn researchers to the LTV Aerospace Laboratories in Dallas, Texas, where they utilized sophisticated, space-age equipment to gather acoustical data for future use in piano design and development. But, by the time Kent and his research team returned to Elkhart, negotiations for the sale of the Conn Company were already underway. By May, the company had been sold to Crowell-Collier MacMillan, Inc. Within seven months, the new owners phased out Kent's promising keyboard research and development department. The Conn piano line was eventually purchased (1970) by former Conn employee, Charles R. Walter, who established the Walter Piano Co. in Elkhart.

Both provide piano sounds along with a modern design and color options to match any decor. The NC-500 and NC-300 have an authentic feeling, 88-note hammer-action keyboard that faithfully reproduces the touch of an acoustic piano, which is complemented by a variety of sounds including 11 spacious stereo-sampled acoustic and electric pianos. Three velocity-response curves allow players to tailor the action of the NC-500 or NC-300 to their own playing style. These new pianos utilize Korg's latest stereo sampling technology. Their sounds are derived from stereo digital recordings taken directly from a concert grand piano. In addition to acoustic and electric piano sounds, both models include harpsichord, clavinet, vibraphone, jazz and church organs, strings/pad, and choir presets, for a total of 24 sounds. All sounds can be played individually or in two-timbre layers. Reverb and chorus effects add spaciousness and depth to these sounds. Effects level settings Light/Normal/Deep have been optimized for each sound individually.

A statement that will at once ring true to the layman and make him feel initiated as well as amused. A statement addressed perhaps to some revered virtuoso who did not refuse to play at a private party Busoni would have left the house right away and who, in spite of the detestable instrument, managed to hold his audience spellbound. It is a statement to confound any pianist. Admittedly, many a piano will sound less awful under the hands of an expert than under those of an amateur; but does that make it a good piano? To 'carry the day' on a badly regulated, unequally registered, faultily voiced, dull or noisy instrument implies as often as not that one has violated the music for which one is responsible, that control and refinement have been pushed aside, that the 'personal approach' has been greatly exaggerated and a dubious sort of mystique has taken over, far removed from the effect the piece should legitimately produce. How often does the player find a piano he can rely on, a piano which will do justice to the exactness of his vision? Is it to be wondered at that many of his performances remain compromises? After all, he should not have to struggle with the instrument, or impose his will tyrannically upon it, any more than the instrument should turn into a fetish, an object of idolization that dominates him. On the contrary, the player should make friends with the piano and assure himself of its services especially when Pianism with a capital P is to be transcended. He should give the instrument its due by showing how capable it is of transforming itself.

There were a number of people who experimented with the mechanism and who produced functioning instruments, but it was Bartolomeo Cristofori of Padua, Italy, who built an important prototype and who is traditionally recognized as the inventor of the piano essentially as we know it today. He was the keeper of instruments at the court of Ferdinand de' Medici in Florence. Only three of Cristofori's pianos are known to have survived. His 1720 instrument (by now greatly modified but still playable) has a 54-note compass (from C-F), and is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York; his 1722 instrument, having only a 4-octave compass, is at the Museo degli Strumenti Musicali in Rome; and his 1726 piano, also with a 4-octave (49-note) compass, is at the Musikinstrumenten Museum at Karl Marx University in Leipzig, Germany. None of the instruments has pedals, which came later. Cynthia Adams Hoover, Curator of Musical Instruments at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History, says, "The one at the National Museum of Musical Instruments in Rome has been the least modified through the ages." The late Roland Loest, Curator of Antique Instruments at the Museum of the American Piano in New York, made the perceptive observation that Cristofori's position in history may have more to do with the survival of these instruments than with historical primacy.
