The MIT Department of Physics has been a national resource since the turn of the 20th century. Our Department has been at the center of the revolution in understanding the nature of matter and energy and the dynamics of the cosmos. Our faculty - three of whom hold Nobel Prizes and 21 of whom are members of the National Academy of Sciences - include leaders in nearly every major area of physics. World leaders in science and engineering, including 10 Nobel Prize recipients, have been educated in the physics classrooms and laboratories at MIT. Alumni of the MIT Department of Physics are to be found on the faculties of the world's major universities and colleges, as well as federal research laboratories and every variety of industrial laboratories. Our undergraduates are sought both by industry and the nation's most competitive graduate schools. Our doctoral graduates are eagerly sought for postdoctoral and faculty positions, as well as by industry.

Many biological phenomena are especially remarkable from a physical point of view. This year's lectures will focus on biological networks. Topics are chosen to illustrate the opportunities for research at the interface of physics and biology, especially the convergence of theoretical issues and new experimental insights. The orientation is toward graduate students and postdoctoral fellows with a physics background. Lectures will be held at NEC Research Institute and students will be housed at Princeton University.

136. Electromagnetic Waves
Electromagnetic Waves. What are electromagnetic waves ? Light, microwaves, xrays, and TV and radio transmissions are all kinds of electromagnetic waves.
http://www.colorado.edu/physics/2000/waves_particles/
Electromagnetic Waves
What are electromagnetic waves ?
Light, microwaves, x-rays, and TV and radio transmissions are all kinds of electromagnetic waves. They are all the same kind of wavy disturbance that repeats itself over a distance called the wavelength
The different names refer to different wavelengths, as shown in the demo below. Use the mouse to move the slider and change the wavelength. Drawings are not to scale.
I know what water waves are, but here there is no water! So what's the wave made of?
The wave, or "disturbance," is in an invisible thing called the electric force field. To understand electric forces, we have to learn something about charged particles like electrons and protons. Without these charged particles, there can be no electric force fields and thus no electromagnetic waves.

X-Rays
Fluoroscope This is a demonstration of an X-ray machine called a fluoroscope . To use it, just "grab" the small wire-frame with your pointer, hold down the button, and move it around. You'll see the X-ray of the hand through this window!
Is it really so surprising that x-rays can go through solid objects? Do you know why some things, like bones or metal, are more resistant to x-rays than skin and muscle? Did you know that light can also penetrate some materials?

National Committee for Physics The National Committee for Physics is chaired by Professor John McInerney (UCC) with Professor Gerry O'Sullivan (UDC) as the Secretary. The focus of the National Committee for Physics has largely been on its working groups such as Education and CERN. The Working group on Education, led by Professor Martin Henry have produced a brochure 'Third Level Physics Courses in Ireland' for schools to promote awareness of opportunities in Physics to help arrest the decline in numbers taking Physics to Leaving Certificate level. The Department of Education convened a Task Force on Physical and Chemical Sciences on the suggestion of the National Committee for Physics. The Task Force published their report in 2002: http://www.education.ie/servlet/blobservlet/physical_sciences_report.pdf
