Home About the Department People Research ... News Harvard Cyclotron The Second Harvard Cyclotron, 1945 to 1955 Immediately following World War II, the U.S. Navy began a program of funding basic science and through its Office of Naval Research the government fulfilled the unwritten obligation of 1943 of a new cyclotron for Harvard. The Navy funded the construction of a 160-ton cyclotron and Harvard provided the funds for the construction of a building to house both the cyclotron and a connecting laboratory. Looking west from the Divinity School, September 1946 American Journal of Radiology which presaged the later medical work At a conference in Cambridge, UK, in September 1946 Bainbridge described the plans for the new cyclotron. It was to occupy an empty area (photo left) between the old Gordon McKay laboratory on the east side of Oxford Street and the Divinity school on Divinity Avenue. As professor Bainbridge mischievously said, the planned neutron beam would head straight for the divinity school supposedly sending the occupants to the heavens prematurely. In 1948 Professor Norman Ramsey was recruited from Columbia University and became director of the cyclotron laboratory. From then on construction proceeded rapidly and in summer of 1949 the first beam was obtained. At the celebratory party the champagne cork made a dent in the ceiling plaster board. This was carefully preserved until an unfortunate redecoration sometime about 1980. The photograph (next page) shows Professor Ramsey and chief engineer Lee Davenport in the control room about this time. The dedication of these two men was great. After a formal dinner with the President of Harvard they returned to the cyclotron, in their dinner jackets, to find a leak using a new helium leak detector that had been delivered that afternoon.

HIgh Energy and Nuclear Physics The focus of the nuclear physics research program has been to: understand the structure of protons and neutrons, as well as mesons, in terms of the underlying quark and gluon structure; understand nuclear structure and reactions, especially nuclei at the limits of mass (superheavy elements), excitation energy, angular momentum, and neutron-to-proton ratio; study the properties and phases of nuclear matter; study fundamental symmetries of nature as they are apparent in nuclei and nuclear reactions; and study the nuclear dynamics of the sun, supernova, other astrophysical objects, and nucleosynthesis, which includes understanding the properties of neutrinos. Another major direction for high energy physics in recent years has been into space, since particle physics is essential to an understanding of our universe and its evolution. As one example, high energy physics techniques were used in the 1990s to discover that the expansion of the universe since the Big Bang is actually speeding up rather than slowing down. Plans are being made to pursue this very important discovery with an orbiting telescope.

Center for Space Physics About the CSP The Center for Space Physics was formed during the 1987/88 academic year by four faculty members from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) and the Department of Astronomy . The current director of the Center, Professor Supriya Chakrabarti , began his new position in the fall of 1997. For the 1998/1999 academic year, we can again report a year of significant accomplishments. Our members continue to discover exciting phenomena, develop new instrumentation and techniques, lead and participate in various national and international committees, and involve graduate and undergraduate students in all aspect of space research. On October 5, 1998, Professor Michael Mendillo delivered the 1998/1999 University Lecture entitled, " Astronomy Through A Glass Darkly." Boston University's energetic particle detectors aboard the POLAR spacecraft continue to provide exciting data that could potentially lead to a new perspective on magnestopheric physics. Boston University's imaging team continues pile up new discoveries, including the discovery of a third tail on comet Hale Bopp. Furthermore, they have found that an extended lunar sodium tail liberated during a meteor shower extends well past the Earth. History of Physics at Xavier Quantum Mechanics Conferences A week-long conference on the foundations of quantum mechanics was held at Xavier during the first week of October, 1962. The conference was sponsored by NASA, the Office of Naval Research, and the Judge Robert S. Marx Foundation, and attended by a number of noteworthy physicists. The main participants included: Boris Podolsky (a Xavier faculty member, pictured right), Yakir Aharonov, Paul Dirac, Nathan Rosen, Eugene Wigner, and Wendell Furry. Conference Pictures Two of the attendants were Nobel Laureates Paul Dirac received the award with Erwin Schrodinger in 1933 for "their discovery of new productive forms of atomic theory," and Eugene Wigner received the award in 1963 for "his contributions to the theory of the atomic nucleus and the elementary particles, particularly through the discovery and application of fundamental symmetry principles."
