Physical therapists are health care professionals who address the needs of patients and clients by helping them restore, maintain, and attain optimal physical function. Physical therapists work closely with other rehabilitation and health professionals to "provide services to patients and clients who have impairments, functional limitations, disabilities, or changes in physical function and health status resulting from injury, disease or other causes." Their primary goal is to help their patients achieve optimal health-related quality of life. Physical therapists work closely with patients, family members and caregivers during a difficult time in the patient's life. Successful physical therapists are caring professionals who are able to understand problems in the lives of their patients and have true empathy for their situation. They are knowledgeable and creative problem solvers who are motivated by a desire to help their patient achieve optimal function and reach their life goals. During their educational preparation, physical therapy students receive extensive academic preparation and develop skills in examination, evaluation, diagnosis, prognosis and intervention that are grounded in established theoretical foundations and scientific evidence.

Have you ever wondered what physical therapy is? Don t worry, he said. I ll have you running and kicking in no time. . What Is physical therapy?

KidsHealth Kids People
It was the last minute of the big soccer game. Kelly was running toward the goal line hoping to kick the winning point when she crashed into another player. Ouch! When she tried to stand up, Kelly's leg really hurt. Her parents took her to the emergency room . There, a doctor told Kelly she had broken her right leg. Kelly would have to use crutches and wear a cast for 6 weeks. She was worried. What would happen when her leg was healed? Would it ever be strong enough for soccer or softball again? Several days after the accident, Kelly's parents took her to a physical therapist. "Don't worry," he said. "I'll have you running and kicking in no time." What Is Physical Therapy?
Physical therapy uses exercises and other special treatments to help people make their bodies healthier and stronger. A physical therapist can treat different conditions in many ways, including massage, heat and cold treatments, or electric stimulation. They might also help a person use exercise equipment like a treadmill, step or stair climber, or stationary bicycle. More than 90,000 physical therapists treat nearly 1 million people every day.

Article on physical therapy in small animals.
http://www.geocities.com/petsurgery/Physical_Therapy.html

Physical Therapy

There are many physically therapeutic modalities and procedures available to the small animal patient. Post surgical management is a critical determinant of the success rate of many surgeries. Prior to the initiation of a physical therapy program, a thorough evaluation should be performed. The overall goal of physical therapy is to facilitate and expedite successful recovery following an orthopedic or neurological injury or surgery.
Patient Assessment:
Your pet's physical therapy evaluation includes: previous medical history, current surgical or medical therapy, limb range of motion, muscle mass and strength, gait analysis, palpation, neurological and spinal examinations. Although basic physical therapy protocols have been established for routine procedures, it is frequently necessary to make adaptations for the individual patient.
Modalities and Procedures:
Cold Therapy (Hypothermia):
Local hypothermia decreases the messages sent through the nerves, thereby creating mild pain reduction. It produces blood vessel constriction in localized tissues to decrease swelling and relax skeletal muscles.
Heat Therapy (Hyperthermia):
Local hyperthermia increases tissue temperature, thereby producing pain relief, sedation, and an increase in local metabolism. Heat therapy facilitates the healing process by producing blood vessel dilation, thereby enhancing local blood flow and decreasing edema. In addition, localized heat may enhance subsequent soft tissue massage and exercise therapy, and thus should precede these supplemental therapies.

The Alexander Technique and Physical Therapy by Deborah Caplan PT Benefits for both Therapist and Patient Physical therapists use their bodies in their work. Often neck, shoulder and back pain results. The patient gets better, but the therapist slowly gets worse. The Alexander Technique is a set of guidelines for using the body efficiently in daily activities. It has proved helpful as an addition to the treatment protocol for patients with back problems. It can also be of benefit to the physical therapist. Since my mother was trained as an Alexander Technique teacher by the Technique's originator, F.M. Alexander, I grew up with his work as part of my life. I didn't give it too much thought originally, except to consider it a bit odd, as was any mind/body discipline in the 1940s. My first real appreciation of Alexander's work came as I applied it to dancing, an early interest of mine. Some years later, after becoming an Alexander teacher, I chose physical therapy, which required gaining a more detailed technical knowledge of the body's structure. Alexander did not spring from medical roots. He was, first and foremost, an artist. But his process of self-observation in resolving his vocal problem is a fine example of the scientific method. When I started my physical therapy career, I soon realized that, by applying the Alexander Technique to myself while I treated patients, I could avoid a lot of stress and discomfort in my own body. As I sat in my anatomy classes, I found myself delighting in the harmonious match existing between human structure and Alexander's instructions for improved body movement, what he called "use."

About thirty years ago Fritz Smith, an American osteopath and doctor, was asked to be present when an Indian man walked barefoot for twenty yards on burning coals; it would be his job to provide urgent medical care if necessary. Fritz watched the man perform the fire walk and examined him immediately afterwards. He could find no trace of any injury, nor any damage to the skin on the soles of the feet. At that moment he realised that what he had been taught at medical school was not an adequate explanation of how the body works, and he knew that he wanted to understand more. He qualified and practised as an acupuncturist, and as a result came across an added difficulty. It seemed that western and eastern descriptions of the body were both true, and both partially true; was there some theory or principle from which they could both be derived? He worried away at this question for some years, and when he got the answer he also got Zero Balancing. The Basic Idea
Fritz Smith saw that the skeleton, the body's structure, and its energy are intimately related. For example, if the bones of the skeleton are not well aligned, then the flows of energy through the body will not be effective. And that causes problems because it is these flows which, in his view, maintain the integrity of a human being as a separate functioning entity and also connect that being to the life force which is in all things. Similarly, if there is a disturbance in the energy flows, for example following a fracture or an emotional shock, that would leave its mark on the skeleton. As a result, it would not provide the optimum combination of stability and flexibility; a combination which is so essential to our well-being.

Therapeutic Riding
Therapeutic riding utilizes the movement of the horse and specialized activities to maximize the therapeutic benefits to a rider. It is often recommended by physicians, physical therapists, occupational therapists and speech therapists to improve flexibility, balance, muscle strength, coordination, posture, and to stimulate the central nervous system. Other benefits include improved memory, sequencing, attention span, self-awareness, increased self-esteem and self -confidence.
Our instructors are experienced equestrians specially trained and certified through NARHA to be Therapeutic Riding Instructors. Hippotherapy with a physical, speech, occupational or mental health therapist is available on a limited basis. (Read more about Hippotherapy - click here.) Volunteers
Volunteers are important team members to our program. Volunteers are trained to side walk, lead, and assist before, during, and after riding sessions. Experience with horses is not required. Volunteers enjoy their time in the program as they watch participants gain confidence, strength and healing in the program, spend time with other volunteers and staff and learn about horses. Sponsors
We have a direct sponsor program which means 100% of your donation is used to sponsor a handicapped rider in our programs.
