Week 1 Science seeks to understand the world around us:
  • Take students outside.
  • Ask students to carefully observe their surroundings for three minutes. After the three minutes, ask detailed questions about the surroundings. Examples: How many trees can be seen; How many windows are on the building; How many people have walked by; How many cars have passed; etc. Discuss the importance of observation in science.
  • Ask questions about the physical surroundings. Examples: How is the concrete (asphalt) in the parking lot made; Where does the electricity in the electric line come from; What kind of cloud is that; How do clouds form; etc. Discuss the inquisitive nature of scientists.
  • Ask students what questions they have about their surroundings.
Lab safety:
  • Place a small piece of sodium metal in a beaker of water.

LINKS ON THE WEB For general educational resources on the Web, individuals and organizations offer pointers: Alan Cairns, a high school teacher, recommends General Education Resources . Putnam Valley Schools has a good list of Links for Teachers , and a large amount of info and annotated links on Educational Standards , broken out by subject and state. Classroom Connect and the Cornell Gateway provide a good set of starting points. Of course there's Yahoo - Math and Science Education or the other general Web indexers. We sell direct, and we have distributors: These links, of course, are not under our control and we cannot be responsible for them. If you find a good page, or have any comments, let us know! Here are some science, math and technology education links we've found interesting (many of these have good lists of links themselves). Further down is our not-to-be-missed Dessert Tray of links.

Science Experiments Straight from the Web!
Think of your favorite science lesson from elementary school, and it probably won't be one that involved a lecture. Hands-on means heads-up! Teachers are responding to their students' need for real-life, experimental science activities. But where can you find them? The Web is brimming with great lessons for you, so build a guitar, make a raisin dance, or build a solar hot dog cooker. You provide the supplies, and the Net will show your students how to use them. Included: Bill Nye tells Education World that there is no substitute for hands-on learning!

Physics on the Road Demos
The Traveling Physics on the Road has impacted approximately 30,000 K-12 students per year in the last ten years. Our demonstration show lasts up to an hour, and can be tailored to various age groups and to meet school scheduling requirements. The show is always a hit with students of all ages and their teachers as it relates the fun and excitement of science.
The heart of the post-visit instrument lies in the section on Classroom Adaptations of FunFest Demonstrations
Anyone who is interested in construction or presentation details of the actual demonstrations used in our road show may also view our Handbook.
Physics on the Road Teacher's Guide ( cover
Physics on the Road takes many of the demonstrations used at the annual FunFest to classrooms. Since the fall of 1995, a Physics FunFest Teacher's Guide has been made available to all schools scheduling a Physics on the Road performance.

Getting Hooked on SCIENCE with Dr. Tik Liem
This videotape is a presentation of science discrepant events in front of an assembly of grades 7-9 students. Discrepant Events are science activities or happenings of which the outcome is unexpected. They are sometimes called paradoxical, counter-intuitive, or even intuition-offending. When properly presented, discrepant events arouse a tremendous curiousity in the student, which will motivate the student to find the explanation or answer by him or herself! Besides, these events are alot of fun to do! They create alot of excitement and thus the science concepts become much easier to remember!
The Science concepts presented in this video include:
    • Air exerts pressure
    • The faster the flow of air, the lower the pressure (Bernoulli's Principle)
    • Combustibility of Hydrogen
    • Explosiveness of Hydrogen-Oxygen mixture and alcohol vapors in air
    • Air expands when heated
    • Simulation of the take-off and landing of an airplane
    • Formation of cyclone or tornado
    • Forming of giant soap bubbles
    • Objects in motion stay in motion in a straight line
