Mass Academy Chemistry, Physics, Engineering and Their Activities
Hi, I am Jacklyn Bonneau, a teacher at Massachusetts Academy for Mathematics and Science at Worcester, Massachusetts . I joined the faculty here after fifteen years of teaching at Shrewsbury High School in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, and several years elsewhere. I live in Thompson, Connecticut with my husband, a newly retired science teacher and serve as Chairman of the Board of Education. I have a son, Chris, who recieved his doctorate from Michigan State in Political Science. He will begin teaching at the University of Pittsburg. I also have a daughter, Jenn who is serving an electrical apprenticeship with the US Navy in Portsmouth Virginia. At Mass Academy, I currently teach Physics, Research Seminar, Introduction to Engineering and electives like forensic science. The academy is a school for students accelerated in mathematics and science as juniors and seniors. It is an exam school which is free to the students in the state and considered a public school. We are located in a new facility just off the campus of Worcester Polytechnic Institute . Our philosophy includes an active learning environment where students explore many topics in an interdisciplinary way. Please walk through some of these below and let us know what you think. I am currently working to construct student pages, faculty support pages will be following.

Dear Physics 696 Participant, The course is about to begin! According to my latest class list you are signed up for P696 (Modern Developments in Physics Teaching: For High School Physics Teachers)
Since the class is only one week away, we must start immediately, even before the class starts! I've enclosed a list of supplies you can be looking for. We will be turning them into demonstrations, equipment or lab experiments. Below is a tentative schedule (think I'm behind already!). The first thing Monday I'll go over the course and what is expected. We have already bought each of you some special supplies for $15, due Monday.
Also below is a Grade Determination sheet that explains how your grade will be obtained. The grading process will be discussed in more detail during Monday's class. The basic idea of this course is to learn new inovative ways to teach PHYSICS. Even high school teachers and I guess middle school teachers know some new ways to teach (HaHa), so we SHARE. A good part of the course is presentations for you and how you have dealt with problems teaching a topic. Each time I teach this course, I try to add the latest teaching techniques that come from the Physics Education Research (PER) groups. Therefore is is constantly changing and hopefully improving. This course will illustrate many methods of teaching physics. Good teachers use many techniques to present a topic. It is hoped you will learn many different methods to use in your classroom.

    BY: JENNIFER AUFMANN
This web page is designed to teach middle to late elementary students(third to fifth grade) about the concepts of electricity through multiple hands on, reading, and writing activities. This site will give multiple electricity activities that are applicable to different academic subjects. Each activity is mainly science based but the different lessons will be altered to fit the curriculum of all academic subject areas. The activities are organized by one of the following subjects, Children's Literature, Science Lab Activities, Math Activities, Art Activities, and History Activities. Children's Literature Below is a list and short summary of children's books that incorporate the topic of electricity in some form. 1.) Berger, Melvin. "Wild Weather" Ranger Rick 1993: pg. 4-5
This issue of Ranger Rick explains thunderstorms and other kinds of "Wild Weather." It relates lightning to electricity by explaining in basic terms how electricity forms during a thunderstorm. This book is a great introductory book to relating electricity to the everyday world. Branley, Franklin M.

(1972) in Range Management and a Ph.D.(1976) in Soils and Plant Nutrition. I am presently a Certified Soil Scientist and a Certified Professional Soil Erosion Control Specialist.
My teaching emphasis is in conservation practices, soil morphology and taxonomy, geo-morphology, rangeland management, and erosion control measures.
My outside professional activites include past president, Professional Soil Science Association of CA (PSSAC), and board members on the SLO Coastal RCD and Zone 9 flood control.
My current activites revolve around rangeland resources, storm water management, and erosion control plans. The Rangeland Resources minor is dose to being approved. Students who participate in this minor will learn to recognize plant types, impacts of animal behavior, relationships of plant and animal with water quality, economics, ecology and soil quality. Students work in teams to develop a rangeland water quality plan. According to Nature Jobs ? , 1/24/02: A new awareness of environmental problems is changing. This is creating jobs for disease range specialists and rangeland management is another area with bright job prospects.

"I feel obligated to help spur the interest of minorities and females in the math, science and engineering disciplines; without diversity in all fields the United States will not remain technically competitive."
These words by Dr. Ericsson, make clear her commitment to leading by example for women and minorities in the science field.
Dr. Ericsson was recently featured at iVillage.com , The Women's Network, as one of eighteen women that will change the world. Included on the list are such other women as the U.S. track star Marion Jones and Dianne Feinstein, the United States Senator from California, and Maria Echaveste, Deputy Chief of Staff of the White House. Said iVillage, "[w]e've decided to honor some extraordinary women who are doing extraordinary things. Most of them are not household names yet, and some of them will never be. But each of their work and achievements could affect the world by making it a better place to live." Drawing from the scholarship in policy, curriculum, and teaching, this course explores the major issues faced in urban science education, including (1) the issue of resources (physical, human, and social) in urban schools and how urban science education programs might draw from local resources in meeting the needs of urban learners, and (2) the issue of what roles might teachers, administrators, policy makers, and curriculum writers play in the design and implementation of empowering curricular and pedagogical practices in urban science classrooms. This course provides students with both research-based and field-based experiences. MSTC 4008 Urban Science Education II
MSTC 4008 will continue and draw on discussions begun in Urban Science Education I (MSTC 4007). This course will use cultural lenses and community perspectives to explore challenges and successes in teaching science well with students in public urban settings. We will explore the issues involved in public school science education, from school and classroom vantage points, and practices that represent the best of what we know about science teaching and learning, and how these play themselves out in urban education environments.
