A Pictorial History...
A site inspired by a recent visit to
The Nikon Historical Society
Nikon has helped us see and retain history, emotion, joy, happiness, sad moments, fond memories, the bright and ugly side of where we lived...and painted the world with different perspective and angles.
On the other hand, along with the process of recording history and all those memorable moments in our life faithfully, it made history for itself, creating influential trends in the important development of image-making hardware and optics.
Here is a site, within the best of my knowledge, dedicated to all the followers/users around the globe, to further assist those who have a specific interest or for those wishing to understand more about the basics of the huge Nikon photographic system, which started with - the camera.
This site acts as my personal contribution to the Nikon Historical Society Fred Krughoff ( Romdog , whose opinion has prompted me to alter everything in my site), Douglas Clifford ( ACE , whose help is truly appreciated), this one is for both of you. Enjoy.

82. Stereoviews Of The Nineteenth Century
Great resource. Photographic history A good site to learn about the history of stereoviews and photography in general, written by Ron Blum and Stephen Barnett.
http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/5873/
Stereoviews were like televisions for the 19th century. People would relax in their parlor and be transported around the country and around the world with a box full of stereos and a hand-held or tabletop viewer.
Enjoying stereoviews was a great family activity shared by all ages especially on a snowy night. I hope you and your family enjoy being transported back in history!
Can you see the stereoviews below in three dimensions? There is a way to do it. I stare at the picture until my eyes are slightly out of focus. As I focus my eyes, I stare at one point in the picture trying to bring the two pictures together. It does work. Just takes a little practice.
Here are some of my favorite SNOW views.
Winter snow scene in Oswego, New York taken by F.W. Oliver in the 1870's. Oliver's photography gallery can be see in the left corner. Notice the boys on skis.
Winter snow scene in North Bridgewater, Massachusetts, taken by S. W. S. Howard in the 1870's. Notice the horse drawn sleds.
Snow Views
Clearing the train tracks
This view and the one below show men clearing train tracks of snow. Notice the people watching from the snow bank. Taken by Charles A. Tenney of Winona, Minnesota in the 1880's from his Chicago and Northwestern Railroad series.
Train in the snow
Notice the train behind the men waiting to get through. This is also taken by Tenney.

History of Photography in Astronomical Measurements
Daguerre
In the early part of the nineteenth century, Daguerre (at left) created the first photographic plate, which was simply a thin film of polished silver on a copper base. It was sensitized by exposing the silver face down into a vessel which contained a few particles of iodine, whose vapors formed a thin yellow layer of silver iodide on the surface of the silver.
After a photograph was taken on the plate, it was developed by exposing the plate to a current of magnesium vapor heated to a temperature of 75 degrees Celsius. The vapor would adhere to the part of the plate which was affected by the light. The plate was then fixed by immersing it into sodium thiosulfate, which was used to dissolve the unused silver iodide, and then rinsed in hot water to get rid of any remaining chemicals. The importance that photography could have in the field of astronomy was immediately realized. It would allow an accurate and easy recording of brightness, positions, spectra, and physical aspects of celestial bodies. However, these early photographic plates were not sensitive enough to image faint objects. The first daguerrotype of the moon was made by American physiologist J.W. Draper in 1840, involving a full 20 minute exposure. The first star was not recorded until 1850, when American director of Harvard Observatory W.C. Bond and Boston photographer J.A. Whipple took a daguerrotype of Vega.

The history of photography, antique and classic cameras, and vintage photographs. THE INTERNATIONAL PHOTOGRAPHIC HISTORICAL

THE
INTERNATIONAL PHOTOGRAPHIC
HISTORICAL ORGANIZATION
THE HISTORY OF PHOTOGRAPHY,
ANTIQUE AND CLASSIC CAMERAS,
AND VINTAGE PHOTOGRAPHS
The history of photography, antique and classic cameras, and vintage photographs have all become increasingly popular areas for study and collecting. As more and more people enter this fascinating field, the demand for better information, resources, and appraisal services has also increased. To meet this demand, the International Photographic Historical Organization (InPHO) was created as a resource center offering a wide range of free services to individuals and groups interested in the collection and study of classic and antique cameras, photographs, and all the various aspects of the history of photography. Not just another camera collecting club or moderated newsgroup for photographic antiquarians, this is your best first source for learning about the evolution of the art, science, and technology of photography, as well as practical information on the care, collecting, and appraisal of vintage photographica.
Although InPHO has been in operation since 1985, this website was officially initiated in 1997, and, thanks to the suggestions and input of our many friends and patrons, will be continually updated. In the future you can expect to find here an expanding selection of diverse articles on various areas of the history of photography and on collecting classic cameras, the photo archives of the Internet Museum of Photography, informative charts and timelines, and many links to other significant photographic web sites.
