The Daguerrian Society
Voyage en Orient Following the announcements of the daguerreotype process in 1839 and the calotype process in 1841, there were two photographic processes in general use ( see links in box at right for further details .) In 1851, the wet collodion process was introduced, which is often stated to have made both the earlier processes obsolete. Both continued in use for the particular applications to which they were best matched, and the replacement was much more gradual than is usually suggested. A while ago I read the published autobiography of an English photographer that recounted the incident from his youth that turned him to photography. In the 1890s while he was a young boy in Kent, an elderly wandering photographer had come to his village making daguerreotype portraits and he had been allowed to help with the process. The itinerant claimed to have learnt the process from Daguerre himself - and quite possibly he had done so - some fifty years earlier. The process was still meeting his and his clients' requirements over 40 years after it was 'obsolete.'

While its subjects and social functions were fairly well defined by then, it remained a specialized form of picture-making that still held some of the magical aura of its birth. The average person was familiar with what photographs looked like and probably kept some at home, but few people took photographs themselves. In addition, most photographs existed as unique originals, because copies were still difficult to make.

A Bit of History
Aerial Perspectives Imagined and Real
These modest history pages will feature a few items found during my early research on alternate means for low-level aerial photography By far the most entertaining and useful resource the catalog of a museum exhibit loaned by my friend and colleague George Loisos. Titlted " cities: from the balloon to the satellite ", the catalog was published by the Centre de Cultura Contemporania de Barcelona under the direction of Albert Garcia Espuche. It chronicles the developing use of aerial images their contribution to our understanding of cities and their relationship to the landscape. I'm quite impressed with this catalog and would love to find a copy for my own collection.
Kite Aerial Photography's Precursors It must be a basic part of human nature to wonder how the world would appear from on high. One indicator is the existence of aerial views of our cities and landscapes long before human ability to fly. These early drawn aerial views are fascinating.

The History of the Camera Obscura

The History of Photochemistry A substance which undergoes physical or chemical changes when subjected to light energy is called a photochemical substance.
The Foundations of Modern Photography
The Calotype Process
The calotype process was invented by William Henry Fox Talbot, and was the first positive/negative process. Fox Talbot soaked paper in a solution of sodium chloride, then in a solution of silver nitrate, which formed silver chloride on the paper. It was repeated several times to increase the concentration of the chemicals in the paper, and the paper was then exposed wet. By exposing it wet, and with so much chemicals on it, the exposure time required to darken the paper sufficiently was cut from an hour to ten minutes. Once exposed, the image was fixed with either potassium iodide or sodium chloride. In 1835, he produced what is thought to be his first successful negative on paper.
After further experiments over the forthcoming years, Fox Talbot discovered the invisible latent image and its development with chemicals. He began coating his negative paper with wax, making it more translucent, and was able to produce positive images by projecting the negative image onto a similar material. The essential principles of modern black and white photography are the same as those of the calotype process. However, the process has evolved, and has become much more efficient.

Over 30,000 photographs, drawn from the holdings of the Western History and Genealogy Department at Denver Public Library, illuminate many aspects of the history of the American West. Most of the photographs were taken between 1860 and 1920. They illustrate Colorado towns and landscape, document the place of mining in the history of Colorado and the West, and show the lives of Native Americans from more than forty tribes living west of the Mississippi River. Also included are World War II photographs of the 10th Mountain Division, ski troops based in Colorado who saw action in Italy. The mission of the Library of Congress is to make its resources available and useful to Congress and the American people and to sustain and preserve a universal collection of knowledge and creativity for future generations. The goal of the Library's National Digital Library Program is to offer broad public access to a wide range of historical and cultural documents as a contribution to education and lifelong learning. Digital collections from other institutions complement and enhance the Library's own resources. The Library of Congress presents these documents as part of the record of the past. These primary historical documents reflect the attitudes, perspectives, and beliefs of different times. The Library of Congress and the Denver Public Library do not endorse the views expressed in these collections, which may contain materials offensive to some readers.
