There are several controls on the modern camera that are vital to any photographer who is serious about making photographs rather than simply taking them. These controls are the lens focal length, the subject distance, the aperture and the shutter speed. Fig. 1 a typical camera. Coupling the use of these controls with your selection of film type, point of view, moment of exposure, lighting (either through your choice of time of day or through your use of flash or flood light) and its direction and quality as well as your control of film processing and print making gives you tremendous ability to structure and create your images, rather than simply blindly recording the reality in front of your lens. To use these controls successfully involves a certain amount of mental previsualization of the final image and this is the most important skill for a photographer to develop. Try to look at the world with a critical eye whenever you can. Try to see picture possibilities and envision how you would photograph them. By doing these visual exercises your photographic vision will sharpen rapidly.

I bought this book because I hadn't used my 35mm camera since some photography classes in high school, and wanted to refresh myself with the basics. The book is quick and to the point, not mincing any words or going into much detail in any of the topics. It covers the basics of camera operation, illustrating the concepts of depth of field and shutter speed (and it's balance with aperture) quickly but clearly, using photographs to demonstrate them all. You can probably sit down and read the bo...

Adobe Photoshop 6.0 for Photographers-

Adobe Photoshop 6.0 for Photographers focuses on the capabilities of Photoshop that are most useful to professional, particularly commercial, photographers. It's no cheesy production: with its crisp text and color images printed on heavyweight paper, and a companion CD-ROM with several substantial QuickTime movies, it's a beautiful way to learn. The book is primarily a guide to using Photoshop as an effective photographer's tool. A substantial portion of the book is spent on digital image ca...

  • Setting The Scene - Angles Very often, there is a strong temptation just to point the camera and shoot. But one of the easiest ways to improve your pictures is to spend one or two minutes thinking about the image. For example, a tall subject - such as a doorway - might well be improved by taking the picture upright rather than in landscape format. This emphasises the height of the subject.
Try moving around the subject to take the best possible shot and where possible go in close to fill the frame. Shooting the picture from above - or below - the subject will give different perspectives. In short, don't just see a picture, take it and then move on - experiment with three or four different shots.

The scene is little changed today, just a few more houses on the hillside. The actual photograph was taken from a slightly elevated position. A band-stand was built in the same year and on the spot where the photo was taken. It is probable that the photographer positioned himself on the ladders or roof to get the desired shot.
This design and others similar were produced by a photographic method of etching the copper plates. The technique was developed by Temple for Maw and Co, designs using the same technique appear on post 1904 Booths tiles, giving rise to the possibility that Temple was designing for both Maws and Booths. The reverse is featured in Back Chat 14, Glazed Expressions 20, Spring 1990, Fig 5.
Clive House, Shrewsbury keep Temple's notebooks. They contain a sketch by Temple containing the 'bowed headed eagle'.

Tell a friend Find subscription deals Asiatic Portraits - photographic techniques and equipment - Brief Article
PSA Journal
July, 2001 by Derek Slattery
The words Photo Reportage and Photojournalism are synonymous as they are the reporting of events for the press or factual presentation as illustrated in books. With regard to the Asiatic portraits that illustrate this article, though they have similarities with the word "reportage" and have some of the same obstacles to cross, they actually fall under the heading of "Photo Travel" in amateur circles. My Asiatic portraits are mostly taken outdoors in harsh environments where many factors have to be taken into consideration in order to obtain a satisfactory result, such as type of camera, lens, and the film that is most suited to the subject matter. The most important consideration, however, is general weight as one often has to travel on foot over difficult terrain in unfavorable climate conditions. Regarding equipment in general, one has to dispense with heavy tripods, both for air travel and general comfort, and rely instead on a steady hand or an `Image Stabilizer' system, which is built into the lenses of modern cameras.

Surrealism and Photographic Technique
By Kevin Wilson
insomnium.co.uk
The Pinhole Camera Simplicity at its most basic. With the increasing focus within photography on technological advances in digital cameras and computers it is easy to get carried away and forget how a photographic image is created. There is no need for a lens just a light proof box with a pin hole opening that allows light to hit a sheet of film. Without technology there is unpredictability, inconsistency and contradiction. This lack of control therefore means the photographer can never be sure how the final image will look. The pinhole image has a certain mysterious dream like quality that at times can be difficult to comprehend. It tends to suggest the form of objects by viewing the world more ruthlessly than the human eye - challenging the traditional ways of seeing. Since exposures are long the pinhole stands still observing while everything around it carries on regardless, objects can become blurred, take on a different shape or can be omitted from the scene completely. The pinhole camera can be compared to allowing a tape recorder to record at the side of your bed as you sleep while played back in the morning instead of the silence you expected you hear unfamiliar sounds and voices. The pinhole camera is a method I will be using for future projects.
