home about search site map ... data search Glacier Photograph Collection Home Documentation Search Online Database Glacier Photograph Collection and Index Summary The National Snow and Ice Data Center/World Data Center for Glaciology at Boulder (NSIDC/WDC) archives the Glacier Photograph Collection of historical glacier photographs, dating from the 1880s to 1975. The collection contains approximately 5,000 prints and includes both aerial and terrestrial photos. The photographs are primarily of Alaskan glaciers but also include the Pacific Northwest (U.S. and Canada), the Rocky Mountains, and Europe. The photographs can be viewed at NSIDC offices, or NSIDC library personnel can search the images upon request. NSIDC staff will provide prints or negatives at cost for most of the images in the collection. A glacier name index (inventory) that includes various metadata for the non-digital (analog) collection is available on microfiche. The metadata cover many aspects of the individual photos, including altitude at which the photo was taken, date, photo number, latitude/longitude, mountain range, and drainage system. Many of the photographs in the collection have been digitized to create the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)/NSIDC Online Glacier Photograph Database . This online, searchable database contains approximately 1000 digitized historic photographs of nearly 200 glaciers in Alaska, California, Colorado, Montana, Washington, Wyoming, British Columbia, and Yukon Territory.
